Off-season thoughts
That Vancouver trade is terrible for the Leafs. We give up two firsts and one of our most hyped prospects AND a roster player who is pretty decent for a roster player who is pretty good? Seems so not worth it

Ya like I think the wings could conceivably take on Engvall but we're not getting anything for him

If we trade Marner (a top 5 point scorer) it's gotta be either someone of equal value and lower cap, or two pieces that help with depth

I agree with you but to be fair, this <em>is</em> basically a King's ransom

If I'm CBJ no way I trade Domi AND retain for Dermott and SDA. SDA is very possibly not going to make it, and Dermott is an alright D.

Marner is a top 5 point scorer, Dvorak had 31p 56 games this season...even a 1st and 4th don't make up for that discrepancy. I doubt Zach signs for less than 5, although you never know with hometown + flat cap

JT doesn't do that. Prettty sure "family" and "playing for his hometown team" trump "weather" and "taxes"
4.8 for a guy who is 30 and had 21 points in 51 games this season?

Ok yes I'm a bias Leafs fan and I agree Tavares could go easily, but Marner was top 5 in league scoring, and the 3rd best Canadian. He clearly makes it.

The Ottawa trade is interesting and seems within the realm of realistic, but...
I really don't see Edmonton paying their first round pick – which could turn into a top 3 based on them being 7 points out of a WC spot and 4th last in the league – for a 3rd round pick and a defenseman who will likely appear in 0 to 1 playoff run. Adding the second rounder makes it even less likely to me.

NYR Trade
Three issues:
1: If Nylander would sign for that little, he would be signed by now
2: The Leafs wouldn't trade him if he signed for that little. They want to keep him, the issue is the salary
3: The combined cap of Namestnikov and Shattenkirk is way more than we would be willing to pay Nylander, and would make huge cap problems next year. It would make way more sense to sign Nylander to a good deal and keep him then pay 10+ mil for those two players

Legit Smartest Moves for TO
A. Why would you want to move Gardiner? He put up 50+ points last season. He's incredible, and I think his defensive game gets a terrible wrap because of one bad series and an atrocious game 7
B. A lot of people are saying that their team should sign Riley Nash, so IDK if it will be easy to get him, and it's totally possible he could not work out as this season could have been an outlier. I would be happy to see him signed to this deal, but he may look for more money elsewhere
C. I've heard the price for Tanev would be a bit higher, but not sure. That trade may make a lot of sense for Vancouver
D. I agree that Leafs could try to solve their RHD problems from within with Carrick and Holl. At least I think the should try it

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Goulet</b></div><div>That is an enormous price to pay for Provorov.</div></div>
Seconded. I would trade Gardiner and a first, though I philly would definitely not go for it. I don't see why we need Provorov right now when we have Liligren coming up in the next two years and we don't yet have a good grasp of where his potential will end up.

NEW 5 Trades plus UFA's (only 4 now) - Dream team for next season
I would say drop the Kessel trade and the Oreilly trade. I would hate to see Calgary give up that much for a second line centre when they already have Backlund and Jankowski as a great 3rd line centre. The Kessel trade is fine but a) I don't know if CGY is sending enough value, and b) I don't know if it's even necessary. Phil is great but also defense is such a strength for the flames, and Gio is getting older so Brodie is someone I'd want to keep around. If you're signing Neal I don't think another RW is necessary

The Toronto trade is beyond absurd. I wouldn't trade any one of those assets for Chirs Tanev and a third, let alone all three (ok, maybe Kapanen, but probably not).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Club_de_Hockey_le_Canadien</b></div><div>Where are your 2018 and 2019 1st round players?</div></div>
I think people are overvaluing Matthews (I think he's one step beneath Stammer and Tavares) and I don't think he should make more than 9, but that's just my opinion. The talk is that the Leafs will trade Marleau in the third year to make some room for Marner and Matthews and all their other RFAs. That said, I'd be happy to see him stay if there's room. As for defense I think ppl overthink it or else think they require Karlsson to fix them. The left side was solid this year, the right side was rough. My hope is that Zaitzev gets his game back, Liljegren is ready for next year, and Carick or Holl can play second pairing minutes. Definitely too optimistic, but we'll see

I really don't understand the Minnesota trade. Gardiner had 14 more points than Spurgeon and similar possession numbers. Yes, he's LHD and Spurgeon is RHD which Toronto needs, but I think you're undervaluing Gardiner. Brown for Ennis is a loss for Toronto IMO, and throwing in the first seems absurd. Not saying its stupid, but I'd be interested to hear your rationale.

I'm actually a leafs fan, and I thought this deal was possible for us (though not ideal). Basically, we have Marner, Nylander, Brown, and Kapanen on the right side so I'm less worried about that. However, if Nylander goes to C then we may need Brown
