Well… if you look at carbs (pasta and bread) as a comparison they are at 13.5 and 13.9% of the cap which would put rants in the 12.5 range at 92m projected cap.

Don't mind me, just riding shotgun on MYM's wagon! Sure is fun to easily be able to keep Rants though!

100 million would be a big leap from the projections but even without that leap it's eminently possible to keep Rants and field a good roster. There's nothing even to say he goes that high either.

I think Daccord makes close to double that on his next contract if he keeps this up, Korpisalo got 4 mil for 5 years off of 39 good games and a mediocre playoff series, Daccord shouldn't settle for less unless the market just isn't there

They'll afford Rants. It just means they can't afford some of the other luxuries.
Caveat this comment with the following: IDK what your other conversations were. If someone was saying the team can afford to keep everyone, they are obviously wrong.</div></div>
It was more of the usual we've suddenly started seeing......the Avs can't afford Rantanen and so we'll offer pennies on the dollar.

If Sakic and CMac turn into absolute morons like you have been here then no they wouldn't be able to. They aren't, and won't be. so Walker and Drouin almost certainly won't be on the roster at those figures and there is a good chance others will have moved by then. Therefore you've just proven exactly what we've been saying. The Avs can afford to keep Rantanen easily.

2 years of a guy they really don't need for their top forward prospect (that they do need), a first and a second. That's why.

The Avs can afford him they just can’t afford Walker and Drouin. Neither of which are going to be with the team next year. It’s not going to be easy or painless but it’s doable.
Top 10 players usually stay with their team.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Thorne</b></div><div>Who would you get rid of next summer? On top of losing Drouin and Walker for nothing, COL has to get rid of atleast one roster player (Girard, Colton, Lehkonen) to make the cap work if they insist on keeping Rantanen. While I agree that keeping Rantanen probably gives us the better roster for 24-25, I think that by trading him COL can extend the cup-contending window beyond 26-27 (Makar extension).</div></div>
Colton. Not because I dislike him in any way but because he's the most replaceable. The only way you trade Rants is if you're thinking of doing something like going after Guentzel in free agency and trading for Crosby if he were to suddenly be available.

I mean technically you could just run a 20 man roster and be compliant. That cuts got to come from the middle the most likely candidates in no particular order Manson/Girard, Colton and Georgiev are the guys making $3M+, a lot will have to do with the Mittlestadt contract, but I wouldn’t mind a Colton trade if it meant Trenin and Duhaime were resigned.

Jokes aside, I probably do this if I’m Colorado also. Really would be interested to see how the cap would work out with the Mitts extension.

I wouldn't go quite so far as to say they wouldn't win any more cups and they could easily retool rather than rebuild, but that said, there is no real reason to trade him.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>Mitts isn't going to take less that 7AAV, and go look at your injury log this season and tell me it's a good idea to run a 21 man roster.</div></div>
If there's anything we should have learned it's that making statements like, "Player X isn't going to take deal Y" in such absolute terms is folly; players get deals that makes sense for them that don't always align with our idea of what a player "should" or do end up getting. I would ask: who are Mitts' comps and what are the possible scenarios for him at his age, production and role? One comp that really makes sense is Dylan Strome; he's a year older than Mitts and had 65 point production the year before his arb-eligible RFA deal was played. Mitts might make it to 60 points (he's at 54 right now) but, let's be real: just like Strome, he isn't a high-end 2C but is a guy you can count on to give you steady play, especially if you put him with good wings. That deal looks good so far as Strome is having another 60+ point season at a cost of $5M/season.
Also, what is the effect of the salary cap increase going to play? Are we going to see a concomitant rise in player salaries or is it just going to be the stars that can expect to see more money coming their way? What MacFarland has said is they did their due diligence before they acquired him so, apparently, they feel like they can get some sort of deal done that works for the Avs and, presumably, Mitts and his camp.
All-in-all, if Strome is a reasonable comp and Mitts isn't determined to extract every last penny he can, something along the lines of $5.5-6Mx5-6 years isn't at all farfetched.

It was always going to be the case that the Avs would have to run with some ELCs and league min contracts and possibly a short roster. It only takes one 4-5 mil contract to do so. So any of Colton, Girard, Lehkonen or Manson.

Yeah, you can drop the third line to keep Rantanen, but then you become the Leafs, too top heavy to win.</div></div>
LOL! You CAN have depth, you just have to be frugal with what you pay and trust some of the youth.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>GiggywithGibby</b></div><div>Cap constraints limit return for a pending UFA about to sign a record contract for a winger, whether he's top 3 in the league or not, the base assumption around this ACGM is that you can't afford to keep him and keep the depth needed. At that point you don't have the negotiating power to land McTavish +
So no, it wouldn't start with McTavish, or Leo, or Zegras, or Gauthier, or 3OA, or Mintyukov, because it's not Colorado dealing from a position of strength, it's dealing from a position of necessity.</div></div>
The whole point is that the Avs CAN keep him and have depth. Therefore any offer needs to be a good one. That ain't it!
