Also, Monty has said that Heiskanen will be paired with either Johns or Methot, at least to start the season.

Yeah, unfortunately Hanzal is out till late November/early December. I would like to see Pitlick and Janmark on the same line, so maybe move both of them up to the 3rd line and pop Smith into the 4th? Who knows. Hopefully Nichushkin can reignite Spezza's game as well.

Stars makes a splash at home during the draft
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>lavsim96</b></div><div>wrong side of 30's? Max is 29 lol so is JVR btw.
Last year some folks were talking about Max for Selke...he scored 35+ with David Desharnais as center, im sure he would get 40 with playing again with Radu, and say Bozak if you use that dough on a center and having PP time with Seguin/Benn.
Janmark's value is rated so high because he had a good year...</div></div>
Good point about age. The way I see it, the big difference is JVR isn't costing one of our best young players and a first rounder, plus Patches is coming off of a meh season. JVR scored 36 primarily in a 3rd line role (I think?), so I feel like he would bring just as much offense as Patches. They're pretty comparable players if they both have a healthy year, I just look at the cost for each one. And JVR was just an example of an FA to target, there's plenty others out there.
Also, contracts. Janmark gets a bridge deal of $4M, 5 years. Patches has one year left of $4.5M, and then probably needs a raise (if he does in fact perform well) while we also need to resign Seguin, Lindell, and Honka. Money might be tight, it'd be interesting to look at this from a 2019-2020 perspective as well.
Thanks for replying!

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>lavsim96</b></div><div>Pacioretty will bring alot more than just a few points...Paccio could easily score 40g 70+pts and still play good defensively in Dallas, feels like your under valuing him. Janmark will be at the very best a 50 point man and it's possible he never does compared to Max who did it plenty of times in his career and had a down year.
There still money to sign a center since i agree Faksa is a third liner without much offensive upsides to his game. I signed Roussel but the Stars could let him walk and have money to sign a guy like Bozak and if they manage to get rid of Spezza's contract they could even go for JT.</div></div>
40 goals from a guy who's about to be on the wrong side of 30? I'd say that's wishful thinking. With how well Janmark played after being sidelined for the entire previous season, I'd much rather stick with him, especially with him probably getting a bridge deal. Then go after JVR or some other FA. Especially if you let Roussel walk like you suggested, you've got plenty of dough to go after one or more of the pretty good FAs that are available.

Dallas Stars Off season
No way Spezza waives his NTC to go back to Ottawa; he's already said he doesn't want to go back to Canada. Plus Ottawa wouldn't want to give up a really good young guy for 2 distant picks and a has-been.
With the need to resign Seguin, Lindell, and Honka to raises, Patches probably wouldn't be back.
Janmark is underpaid by at least $1M.
If you don't sign Stastny, that probably gives you some wiggle room to make some of this happen. Plus that frees a roster spot for Pitlick, who's earned it after this season.

I think it's a pretty good move! I'm never quite sure how to value RFA rights but I like Miller as a player and I think he could help spread the production around.

Next Year - Improving D
I still see depth scoring as a major issue here. Spezza and Hanzal both have the potential to be liabilities with age and injuries, and Maroon could be there too. I would much rather trade Ritchie than Pitlick.
The Carlson contract would definitely become a liability a couple years down the road, and with all the young D talent we have I don't see a huge need for him. Instead bring back Johns and maybe Pateryn and Heatherington becomes an emergency guy that further develops.
Also, Janmark is underpaid by about $1M.

Just a couple little things: Janmark is going to get around 1.5M more than you have him for here, but that's not a problem with the cap space you have. Also, I would rather have Pateryn back than Hamhuis, considering age and how well Pateryn performed this season. I wouldn't mind letting Roussel walk and let some young talent try and crack the lineup (Gurianov, Hintz, etc.). Also, Nichy will probably be back.

Understatement of the century; this is 5 first rounders, none of which have had the chance to develop. For one year of OEL, which we don’t need.

Stars A.S. (After Spezza)
I like seeing more and more Stars fans signing JVR, but I doubt Spezza is waiving his NTC to go to Canada. Maybe look to Philly and get either Neuvirth or Elliot (preferable Neuvirth in my opinion).

Faulk is going to be more expensive than an aging Zucc, especially to a team like Carolina that won't necessarily be a contender next year. I'd rather deal him for prospects/draft picks and hold on to that MTL first rounder. Really kick the rebuild into high gear.

John Tavares AND Erik Karlsson
This makes sense for a year, but after 18/19, there's a lot of players that will be expecting raises (Cooch, Pavs, Meier, Lebanc, Sörensen) that you won't be able to afford if you want Karlsson to be a shark for more than a year.

I could be wrong but I've heard that Spezza doesn't want to play in Canada. Also MTL is probably going to want a first round pick and since the draft is in Dallas I doubt that would be dealt.

Karlsson trade possibilities
The Blues, Knights, and Sharks trade make the most sense, although I think OTT would want at least one more draft pick from SJ and VGK out of it. Nashville doesn't really have any need for him with their solid D core. I think the Toronto trade is a no brainer. :laugh

There's been reports of talks between McPhee and Bob Murray to make a deal where Vegas doesn't take Vatanen but gets compensated for it with other players, draft picks, or cash.
