Next season
I doubt Mesar will be ready but since the team is not flush against the cap, it could be another 3rd liner at around a million. Obviously competitive team, goaltending not necessarily great and I would miss Arber.

My bad, it was the following season he was nominated :p although he did play for the Sabres that year, as their 7th D of course

A no from Montreal but if some other team gives you the equivalent return, by all means have at it!

New path needed
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TJTwolf</b></div><div>For a '25 6th if there is nothing else left on the table then maybe the Avs do that at the TDL but they're more likely to use any cap space on a move for someone to shore up the C position and whilst Drouin has played C in the past I don't think he's a good ebt for the 2C slot. He's more likely to be a UFA gamble in the off season if at all.</div></div>
For sure and I think the Habs would prefer to use their limited retention spots on something more substantial than just for getting a 6th, but if its 3:59 pm on trade deadline day and nothing else is happening for either team, why not? Drouin will almost certainly be no better for the Avs than he is now but there is just enough raw talent that maybe just maybe he finds a different gear on a team with the talent like the Avs.

Adding depth and toughness
Yeah, Buffalo is in an enviable place where they are becoming competitive, have a deep prospect pool already so could stand to trade some picks, and have tons of cap space. They have a couple tams they'll need to leapfrog to be sure to make the playoffs though so its a risk giving up assets for a UFA like JVR, but it would be a move to show the team that intend to compete now

Trying not to be the worst MTL fan on this site
Its not a bad try but that is definitely not enough for Lafreniere, maybe the Habs pick top 3 protected along with something else. Perhaps picking 4th or 5th overall in this very deep draft would help start a conversation but even then you would have to add. It might not be worth it for the Habs at that point either. The Edmunston trade seems fine

Leveraging Cap Space
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HOCKEYBOY448</b></div><div>Personally I don’t think Kane helps the team or is the right fit. In an fantasy world we make a huge deal for Stamkos (again fantasy) who can score goals and move from the center to right wing spot as needed and actually be able to play decent defense and not be a liability out there. For that move I’d be willing to trade a lot for him (favorite player as well, so biased there). Rangers need a winger that can score. I don’t see Kane filling that role, he’d just be another Panarin and be a liability on defense, which is something we need less of not more of.</div></div>
Hmmm, of the players that might actually be available, Tarasenko sounds more like what you are describing as a need. But he has injury issues but is also cheaper in cap hit and assets to give up ... I am sure Kane would not hurt the Rangers but sometimes the fit is not there even with great players

So that NYR get Kane with almost no cap hit and improve their chances of winning this year while they have an open window to do so

Another alternative is Habs keep Edmunston and retain on Dumi and send him straight to the Oilers, with adjusted returns. But maybe that is being too clever

Its a starting point ... maybe its a 3rd and Habs keep the 5th. Cuylle is just a stand-in for some prospect the Rangers would part with and the Blackhawks would want.

its true that Kane is one of the UFAs that doesn't have to worry about chasing a cup in the twilight of his career. Players like kane would usually waive to chase that elusive ring ... but he might be happy enough with his 3. I don't know what motivates him though so who knows ...

It's better to use the slot if possible of course, but you're just throwing money away at that point. A good GM isn't wasting their owner's money like that.
Dadonov and Drouin will in all likelihood simply walk to free agency and that's okay. We aren't losing value because it just isn't there.</div></div>
Its true, I think the biggest value they can provide right now is walking away in the summer and leaving us all that cap room.

True that they have no value and add nothing to the trade, I suspect the idea is just moving a contract out.

Agreed, Hillis hasn't done much even at the ECHL level, the value of moving his contract spot was probably greater than the value of getting Beaudin off waivers for free.
