Yeah, I figured you'd want to give McLeod a bigger role, so no new faces.

Next year the wingers very likely are Bratt, Mercer, Meier, Holtz, Palat, and Sharangovich in the top 9. Bastian is a cheap 4RW guy and Boq has had nice runs as a 3C before being squeezed out again.</div></div>
Wouldn't be surprised if NJ just signs all their RFAs and runs back the same team, plugging holes with call ups and a low priced veteran UFA or two. No trades, no big UFA signing, including their own. Reassess next offseason based on performance of this core group ... the 24 UFA class is looking 100x better, though many will resign by then.

If the 2019 Draft went Differently
There were plenty who thought NJ could take Nolan Patrick over Hischier in 2017, as well ... Imagine NJ having Kakko & Patrick instead of Hischier & Hughes? They'd be right in the heart of the Bedard sweepstakes this season for sure.

I hope they trade Kakko & Laff, like all the overreationaries want ... they will regret it long term.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Smitty426</b></div><div>May need a vet D man next year but Bahl has settled in nice. With Luke being a left shot RD and Nemec being a strict RD is LD where they look? Is Graves brought back? Before Bahl started paying well (I wanted him moved in the Timo trade, but have come around on him lately) I thought maybe a Carson Soucy. Late bloomer has the size Fitz likes 6'5 211! Good buds with Nate Bast, a UFA at 28 yrs making $2.75M playing 16 min per. Anyway Nemec Luke and Bahl as bottom 3 seems pretty green to me. D would potentially take a step back.</div></div>
Any team would find it tough replacing Graves and Sever same offseason ... Hughes, Nemec and Bahl far from that quality next season. Certainly agree a step back in 23/24 for the blueline, but future is bright. Bahl has really impressed last few games. Wish they'd give Hughes some time in AHL, but I don't see the marketing department letting that happen

Mapping out the offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pretzelcoatl</b></div><div>I'd rather just not keep Graves around. Bahl has been solid and Hughes will be fine</div></div>
Hughes in top 4 is asking quite a bit from a rookie, but I guess we will know more soon. Kids will make mistakes, plenty of them... And the third pair will be Bahl & Smith or Nemec? That will be quite a substantial drop off from what we are accustomed to this season. I'd be shocked if Fitzgerald rolls the dice like that. One injury to Hamilton, Marino or Siegenthaler and they are cooked, without more experienced depth. NJ was spoiled this year with D depth, not so much next year.

Mapping out the offseason
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pretzelcoatl</b></div><div>No need to trade those two, we have enough cap space that they can sit. I'm not sure I'd choose Barbashev over Tatar, and I'm certain Graves would decline that offer and get more money on a medium-long term deal somewhere else.</div></div>
Sadly agree, Gravey should be able to get 4 x 4.5 or so based on comps last couple years ... I wouldnt mind seeing him back to take pressure off of pushing Hughes and Nemec too early. Though there are limited trade clauses out there, one of Marino, Graves or Siegenthaler would certainly be tradable, if they needed to clear someone out in a couple of years.

Also, give Wood a 1-year, prove-it deal. He hasn’t had his legs this year and if it’s just conditioning since he took last year off, that should be enough time to get back to full. If it’s long-term effect of injury or aging, than we wouldn’t be stuck with big contract for the extra 3-years.</div></div>
Love Wood, but I suspect, due to style of play, that body is on its final miles ... or Miles.

You've overpaid McLeod and underpaid both Bratt and Meier. Severson will want almost double that.</div></div>
You're 100% on McLeod as an RFA, but I assume he bumped it up to pay for McLeod passing on the UFA years at the end of this contract. It's not unreasonable to believe McLeod is worth 2.5 / 2.75 a year as a UFA. Oversimplified 2 years at 1.5 and two years at 2.5, meh, I could see it.

I like the idea of bringing Tatar back on that contract, he's been massive for the Devils this season.</div></div>
Tatar has been great and I would certainly welcome him back, but remember there have been criticisms of his playoff performances (or lack there of) in the past. Probably advisable to see how everyone feels after the playoffs ...
And you are spot on with Sever ... Sub 30 year old Right Handed Blueliners get PAID. Generally speaking, all these deals seem a bit too team friendly to be realistic, but I wouldn't complain if I am proven to be wrong.

Devils should target
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NHLfan10506</b></div><div>FLA really needs NHL-ready dmen, so I am sure they would extract the best one they could get from us. Obviously Hughes, Nemec would be out. Siegs and Hamilton also out. Severson and Graves are UFAs. So hard to see us as best option. Spitballing three ways here…
1. Bahl, Walsh, 1st. They would really have to like one of those two guys. Bahl has the size. Walsh is the analytics darling.
2. Three-way deal for more establish dman. Maybe there is a scenario we could supply picks and prospects that could go to Arizona for Chychrun. Bennett comes to us.
3. Trade Marino and extend Severson.</div></div>
Id vote number 2. Rather keep Marino and one seems too favorable for NJ. Ah, it was a nice concept, but wont happen
