My take for the offseason
Seeing Ylonen and Doan on the ice together (again, sort of. Does Alatalo have a kid playing hockey?) would be fun, but I just don't see a lot of room in the lineup next year.
Keller-Hayton-Schmaltz
Crouse-Cooley-Guenther
Maccelli-Bjugstad-Kerfoot
Carcone-McBain- ?
Then you've got Doan, Jenik, N.Smith, Geekie, etc all pushing to fill that spot. O'Brien seems likely to be back to be the 13 because Bear is in love with him.
Maybe if they move someone (Schmaltz?) there will be more room, but every team has a forward or from three in the same spot as Ylonen looking to break into the next level.
More likely to go after a guy like Harris, where it might actually fill a need.

Lou has never believed in remaking his roster mid-season. Used to be slightly more active in the NJ days. Arnott and Langenbrunner one year.
Mostly center and defense depth at the deadline.

(ARI/NSH) - Zucker for 2024 6th (DAL)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OldNYIfan</b></div><div>Hard to believe that Arizona sold him this low, although they were unlikely to get much more. He should have a few good games left in him, and could make a contribution towards getting into the playoffs.</div></div>
He's been so good at the little stuff. Never thought he'd hit 27 goals like past year, but was hoping for a little more offense. Great depth pick no for the playoffs.
Pretty disappointed they didn't retain. Good for Nashville to take advantage.
No idea why they wouldn't retain unless it's penny pinching for the auction and development needed on a new parcel. Obviously they were handcuffed because neither the Dumba or Zucker deals featured retention.

(PIT/CAR) - Guentzel, Smith for Bunting, Koivunen, Ponomarev, Lucius, 2024 2nd (PHI), 2024 5th (CAR)
If I was a Pens fan I obviously would have wanted a prime prospect, but I don't think they did too bad.
Adding Koivunen, Ponomarev, and a conditional 1st/2nd to an org that has a shallow prospect pool is healthy. Really like those two guys. Sure, I'd rather have the blue chip and 1st, but if it isn't there, it isn't there. Better than trading away what little youth you have left and trying to cobble together a late run, and better than losing Guentzel for nothing.
Bunting helps ease the blow in the short-term.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Finski</b></div><div>I am still surprised you guys did not claim Thomson from waivers earlier this year...
If Heinola gets waived starting next year I would hope to see:
Ville Heinola - Sean Durzi
J.J. Moser - Victor Söderström
Juuso Välimäk - Lassi Thomson</div></div>
I think they are going to look for size, tbh. Durzi needs fewer minutes. Moser is the only one of those guys you can trust everynight. Kesselring has been amazing since his call up, but relatively small sample size. Juice has been good, but inconsistent. Durzi is great moving the puck, but gets himself in trouble. Soda is doing great in Tucson but has been extremely underwhelming at this level.
I think they target at least one vet who can eat minutes reliably. Overpay bc we have the cap and will have to, but can then flip. Another rule wrinkle is they are basically all looking for a new contract. So depending on how much they all want relative to performance, maybe some guys get shipped out around the draft.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CD282</b></div><div>Interesting that they took a 2027 pick. That's a long way off.</div></div>
They have 34 picks in the next three drafts already. 20 picks in the first three rounds. So if the fourth was the best pick available they probably don't mind waiting until 2027. It's easier to pull picks from distant drafts (will Holland even be there in 2027?), so I am all in favour of stocking up the best picks possible more or less regardless of year under these circumstances.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Turbo</b></div><div>Aren't they in a bit of a pickle with the 50 contract and 90 reserve limit also?</div></div>
I don't think it's that big of a pickle. A bunch of guys have contracts dropping off. Some being traded. Picks traded to add young players like they have done with Durzi, McBain, Smith.
Picks are the easiest currency to carry and trade. No cap hit involved. No emotional attachment to a selection yet. Can trade them for players or other picks. No-one ever does not want more picks.
When the reserve list gets tight they can trade picks and prospects for players or more picks.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ritzy</b></div><div>Because it's worked so well? Maybe there's a world where the old school and the analytics can come together.</div></div>
The truth is every club uses analytics. They just use completely different stats that are proprietary to the clubs or whoever they contract out to do their stats. They also don't simply look at the analytics to evaluate players.
It's hysterical how the internet-analytics crowd thinks all this works because some guy made a card with no context.
More on topic, Edmundson is a warrior. Great add for a playoff club. Obviously he isn't going to eat 23 minutes a night anymore, but if you're the coach late in a tie-game in the playoffs do you want to send Edmundson out for that faceoff in your zone or Lilly? Easy choice, imo.
More raw talent means precisely zero in the postseason. You're going to get worn down in these series and use a lot of defensemen. Ideally you'd like to wear the other team down, too. That's why these type of defensemen always get "too much" at the deadline.

Many teams like to have offhand powerplay guys so they get direct shots on goal; if you only have lefty or righty you miss out on that too. Kind of the viewpoint of having wingers on their offhands is a benefit too.
I only think Lefty/Righty matters on offensive or powerplay quarterbacks. I don't think it matters with defensive-defenseman or penalty killers.</div></div>
I enjoyed playing offhand as a forward so maybe that colours my thinking, but I don't remember any fuss about handedness in the old days.
