St. Louis Blues signed Justin Faulk (7 Years / $6,500,000 AAV)
Isn't giving Pietrangelo a reasonable contract (7x8.5 or something) much better than overpaying for Faulk?

Minnesota Wild signed Jared Spurgeon (7 Years / $7,575,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsForEver</b></div><div>He's not anywhere close to the level of anyone around him in terms of AAV.</div></div>
He's better than OEL, Ekblad, Trouba, Carlson, Byfuglien, probably Subban and Weber, too.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsForEver</b></div><div>He's ideally a top 3 defensemen on a perfect team.</div></div>
What's a perfect team? A team with the best six defensemen in the league?
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>HabsForEver</b></div><div>Doesn't help that this contract starts around the time most defenders start toregress.</div></div>
I sort of agree with this, there's definitely a chance that the AAV will be a bit high in the last two years or so, but then again, the cap will be higher.

Cast your vote for him for the next Norris Trophy winner if you want, but you will be the only one and that won't be because he is underrated.</div></div>
Sure, he's not Hedman, but he is certainly not worse than Carlson and he is much better than Trouba. He is regarded as a top ~10 defenseman in the analytics community FWIW.
I'm not saying Spurgeon is a top 3 defenseman, but this contract is fair for what he brings and the fact that so many people think it is a 'ridiculous' contract just speaks to how underrated he is.

It really is not ridiculous. Spurgeon is an incredible defensive defenseman while being offensively productive and driving play. How would you argue that he is not underrated?

The term is not ideal, but the cap hit is perfectly fine. Spurgeon is arguably the most underrated defenseman in the league.

Keller had a difficult sophomore season, but I'm fairly confident that he's going to be a stud. The contract is a slight overpay at worst and a big bargain at best.

Honestly, I though Weal was a very solid player for Philly his only downside was that he just couldn't put the puck in the net. Good signing for the Habs.

Pulling the Wild from 2012
I liked Hexy's patient approach, but if we could do this I'd do it in a heartbeat. Those contracts are probably going to be bad in their last two years and we might get in some cap trouble, but I don't give a damn. With Giroux, Panarin, Karlsson, Couturier and Hart, there's definitely a solid chance for a cup and I'd be willing to risk it.
However, that Canadiens trade is a no-no. I'd rather keep Ghost and not sign Armia.

I don't think so. Huberdeau is a great player, but Gaudreau is a superstar. You just don't trade those, especially if they're doing as well as Gaudreau has this season.

Nah, they're really different actually. I doubt Lehtera stays in the NHL after this season, he's been really bad the two years I saw him play for Philly.
Raffl on the other hand has a history of being a very good play-driver able to chip in some points and a guy who can be inserted in the middle-6 if needed. He's ideally a fourth liner, though. It's true that he's struggling with putting up points this season. I'm guessing his contract is going to look something like 2 x 1,500,000$.

Two things as a Flyers fan:
1. No way Raffl signs for that money.
2. You REALLY don't want Jori Lehtera on your team.
