And why are those player unworthy when they’re already Hall of Famers? Matthews hasn’t earned it yet. It’s as simple as that.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Cardiac</b></div><div>Because he was a leaf. When you think of Doug gilmour, you envision him in a leafs jersey. Gilmour was much more iconic for the leafs than Matthew’s has been. Not to mention he is in the HOF. At the moment, Matthew’s doesn’t crack the top 12. Not a slight or attack on matthews but rather just proof he hasn’t played long enough to warrant being in the top 12 for such a storied franchise. Look at Carey price for example. He is easily the best goalie of his generation. 7 years into his NHL career, he had cemented himself as the best goalie in the world. 7 years into his career would he be on the habs all time team? No. There is Roy and plante. He didn’t have enough time to establish himself as being better for the habs than those two. Matthew’s is similar where he is one of the best in the game but he hasn’t had enough time to establish himself in that top 12. The only 2 players I could see being in an all time team who are similar in age to Matthew’s is mcdavid and makar. Mcdavid because he is the best player of this generation and has had a single season under a 100 point pace. The oilers are also not an original 6 team. As for makar he is also not playing for an original 6 franchise. Give Matthew’s another season or two and he probably makes this team but as of now, he hasn’t played long enough to warrant being over a hall of famer despite he is on a hall of fame pace.</div></div>
And even McDavid would be on a 3rd line because you can’t say he’s better than Messier yet

Matthews needs to get out of round 1 before he can be in the same sentence as Gilmour. I’m interested in you going after Gilmore when Sundin would be the easier target? He’s as good a regular season player as anyone much like Matthews and Marner. I only have him in here because the Leafs last were a real cup contender under his leadership. If Matthews can get us out of round one and he looks like a Conn Smythe Calibre player then I’d be willing to put him in Sundin’s spot

Doug Gilmour carried the team within one fluke goal of a Stanley Cup final for the first time since 1967. If someone is going to make an all time team of an original six franchise they need to be in the Hall of Fame

You can still say that without even mentioning Toronto. I can say Sask produces more pro hockey players per capita than any other province, which is a fact. However, we don’t have the depth of quality players the greater Toronto area has. It’s very impressive that town has that kind of talent. It’s just odd to make it into a this place vs that place thing. It’s just something that I find annoying about our internet age, but maybe I’m just a cranky old guy?

He was the first one to start dropping to his knees to make saves, but the modern butterfly has evolved over time. Hall was the catalyst for it for sure, but it wasn't until Esposito that it really started to become more refined. Even then Haseks style was probably closer to controlled chaos than anything else I've seen.
Regardless, most people consider Hasek in the top 5, if you don't that's your opinion.</div></div>
Everything evolved overtime. That’s like saying Alexander Graham Bell didn’t invent the telephone but it sure did evolve over time. Hall was playing that style before it had a name. Esposito adopted it from Hall not the other way around. Then it kind of went into the wilderness until after we saw Tretiak and the Soviets. After that it of course came into the modern form with Roy and Hasek

I like most of the people I tend to come across here but can you do an old guy a favour? When we are taking about all time great players I keep noticing over and over “there were only 6 teams and more people play hockey now.” “Players back then weren’t in great shape and they had second jobs.”
Other nonsense is also uttered to dismiss anything that happened before the internet existed. It’s stupid for one major reason, obviously athletes today are in better shape and use better equipment than athletes from yesteryear. That’s never been debated. It’s like saying phones today are superior to Alexander Graham Bell’s day… well no poop Sherlock! It doesn’t make Alexander Graham Bell less important because apple today makes a fancy phone. It doesn’t make Gordie Howe a has been because Connor McDavid has a better training regiment

57-58 league average .909, Hall had a .906
58-59 league average .905, Hall had a .897
59-60 league average .908, Hall had a .918
In fact the league average save % throughout Halls career was on par or higher than during Haseks era. Yet Hasek had greater separation from those averages.</div></div>
Hall invented the playing style Hasek used. He played in his without a mask on while facing the early slap shots. Hasek like every modern goalie plays with bigger pads and a sweater twice the size of any player. It’s just an easier job. Would you stand in the crease and face a slap shot without all that padding and no mask?

Durnan was before my time but old timers absolutely loved him and couldn’t stop raving about him. You read about him and see he was the dominant goalie of the pre war era. He was ambidextrous which just blows my mind. It’s also my favourite Gordon Howe fact too.
As for Hall he is the real inventor of the Butterfly. He was so good that as an old goalie in that first post expansion season when the Blues just got the hell kicked out of them in the final, he still won the Conn Smythe as a losing goalie! Imagine facing all those great Montreal players on an expansion team and having them just tee off on you while you’re standing there with barely anything to protect you… there’s a reason goalie was a brutal job back then
