So uhh, Edmonton will not be going 7.5M over the cap while giving up their 1st round pick for a player they have no use for.

Oh come on. If Eichel was offered a 1 way ticket to Toronto, he’d jump all over that, and you know it. It has the benefit of not being Buffalo, and I think that’s all that matters to him.
And honestly, that return is pretty good considering how damaged Eichel is and how long this has dragged on. Besides, theres no worries from Buffalo about Marner disappearing in the playoffs 😁

Edmonton gets nothing out of this. The 2nd doesn’t even cover the cost of retention and the other two players have some serious issues.

Kassian is definitely not a cap dump. I am one of those Edmonton fans who’s always believed his size, skill and demeanour is an asset, especially in the playoffs. Now that he’s off to a great start (3-2-5 in 4GP) because he’s got quality line mates, it’s safe to say he’s not going anywhere.

Chicago blockbuster
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>tylerstenson</b></div><div>firstly ill say, I dont think theres any scenario that involves Kane and Toews being moved at this time. Maybe next year at deadline if they are truly out of it, and the guys want to chase another cup. If it were to happen, I struggle to see what the Hawks would even want back from the leafs, especially knowing how valuable 10M of retention is. Would be one of the biggest trade hauls of all time.</div></div>
Yeah part of the reason I thought of this was trying to figure out what Chicago is trying to do. I was thinking Trading toews and Kane by this deadline may return the assets do a quick retool and come out the other side while Jones still has some good (ish lol) contract years left.
Again though, you are right in saying they’d need more than just Mitch Marner to pull it off.

Okay, maybe I went a little too far appeasing leafs fans. What do you think Toronto would have to give going the other way?

Parallel Universe- Hyman Signed
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>RKLW</b></div><div>If Seattle did select Kerfoot add McCann back to the team, but regardless even if we had Hyman still I wouldn't want him at that term, not to mention there's know way to tell if he'd even being doing as good as he is with the Oilers... if you call what's he's doing so far with them "good". I see Kerfoot and McCann being basically the same player skill level wise, MaCann probably has the edge, but probably not a big enough one.</div></div>
I think in this parallel universe, Toronto never trades for McCann, meaning there’s cap space to keep Hyman. It’s trading kerfoot and Ritchie for Hyman and Toronto’s 4th round pick.
I don’t know enough to tell if this is an equitable trade or not, I don’t think Hyman would have 5 goals in 5 games playing for the leafs.

From Edmonton's standpoint, theres nothing to negotiate. You have asked for way too much, and dont offer what edmonton needs in return, specifically a true top 4 defenceman or a goalie. Ben Chiarot is not what i have in mind.

Honoring a Toews and Kane trade request
Edmonton certainly does not need help scoring goals, or any help at center. If any assets are spent, it will be on a top4 defenceman and/or a 1A/1B goalie.

Ah yes, MTL, OTT, NYR, SJS. Those are the best teams in the NHL, practically unwinnable. It can’t possibly have anything to do with the toxic atmosphere around the team…

It’s true, I have an odd sense of humour.
Mostly though I’m just wondering if the Toronto fan base is eating their own players alive. At this point it’s still only a few games into the season and this is being way overblown.

In my original comment I called the trade silly, and this is 1/2 the reason why. The other 1/2 is because I don’t think Holland would give up 2 first round picks for veterans with little term. He very clearly understands the value of top prospects and 1st round picks.

It’s true Edmonton may have been inclined to do this, but at the time, Edmonton was right up against the cap. You’re talking about $10.8M worth of players, so even if you retain half ($5.4m), you also have to take on $5.4m in players. Are you willing to take James Neal? Kris Russell and another $1.5m player? Kassian had just been signed to an extension and Koskinen was running a .917 sv% so neither of them are options.
How much would it cost for you to take these players? And would Edmonton pay that? The trade is already costing 2 first round picks for players with only 1 year of additional term.
Sorry for going into depth, but the site is called CAPfriendly. Besides, how realistic of a fake GM do you want to be.

Moves I wish the Leafs made and never made
It was a mistake to not sign Matthews and Marner to 8 year deals, and it was a mistake to sign them for near McDavid money, Marner especially. Matthews at around 11 and Marner at 8.5-9 would have been much more reasonable, and left more room for another top6 F or top 4 D on your roster.
I agree with the Colorado and Florida deals, it seems like there were 2 mistakes there.
The Seattle one doesn’t make much sense to me because there was no way to protect McCann without paying the 1st and 3rd Seattle wanted.

The Team Canada that I think Blues GM Doug Armstrong will put together
I wouldn’t be surprised if they went with 3 lines of the most talented forwards they can find, and then a 4th line of defensive specialists. The type of hard grinding, win at all cost, PK players that help teams win in the playoffs. They could be used to win important D-zone face-offs and protect leads late in games.

where on this roster is the lowliest position to be
What is this? You know hockey is a team sport and you need people to fill certain roles. A 4LW/4RW can be counted on to kill penalties, forecheck, and the best of them set up the top two lines for shifts in the O-zone. Also teams can be very successful having 1B goalies that can play long stretches and steal games.
Good teams need talented players to play at the bottom of the roster.

Mackinnon has to make more than Matthews (and likely McDavid). This is his big UFA deal and he’s the second best player in the game. He’ll get paid big. And then the rest of this makes 0 sense to me.
