Quebec to Colorado type season
I think Anaheim management takes that offer for Zegras. 7th overall gives them a really good young player to replace Z and they use the $5.75M (plus other cap space) in free agency to add a significant player to help improve their team in the short term too.

Would you start Lindstrom in the NHL next year
It's a good question. I would say you can't answer that right now. See what he does in training camp, if he shows he is ready for the NHL keep him, if not (and I would argue Slaf was not ready in his first year either) send him back to juniors.
I think the main difference is MTL was still rebuilding in Slaf's rookie season. I think next year MTL will be pushing to be more competitive and therefore they might not be able afford Lindstrom the same amount of patience in the NHL Slaf recieved.

Go watch some of his plays the past 25 games. He is Rounding out nicely.</div></div>
And when he doesn't have the puck? He averages ~0.3 hits / game or ~25 per 82 games... that's really soft for a 6'2" 200 lbs player. Even Caufield has 52 hits this season. I think Kakko is too soft for NHL hockey, and that's a prime reason why his game hasn't translated to the NHL.
I'm also coming around to the idea of drafting Tij Iginla, he is thriving in playoffs right now I think he will be climbing the draft rankings.

Colton for sure would be an improvement to their current bottom 6, however I'm hoping for bigger things from the habs this offseason. A reunion with Monahan on the 3rd line would be ideal IMO.
They have lots of cap space and defenseman / draft picks to make a big splash this offseason potentially.

That's a fair trade offer for Kovacevic (value wise), but I don't think MTL would really want Colton.

Agreed that's insane... Rossi is much closer to Newhook. Newhook has shown more than Rossi in years prior, he is 8 months older than Rossi but they produce at the same rate this year (Newhook missed time with an unfortunate ankle sprain).
I respect guys like Newhook and Rossi, but if you are talking about trading a top 10 pick, Guhle, or Mailloux + a 1st for players of that caliber you need to give your head a shake.

Why would Montreal want Rossi? With Caufield and Hutson they will already have 2 very small players playing major roles.
Then there are guys like Newhook, RHP, Ferrell, Simoneau, Mesar, etc...
Pass for me, the cost of acquisition isn't worth it, he's not the type of player Montreal needs to be looking at.

Gotta try to up his value before they trade him in the offseason! Just kidding haha
He still finished with less than 15 minutes of ice time though so he still isn't quite getting top 6 minutes yet. I don't think that's a very big deal for a player returning from an injury but I think there is a bit of truth to the trade rumours, where there's smoke...

I'm beginning to catch on to this as well, and as someone who was interested in Zegras before I'm now questioning it because it seems like it might be an unnecessary risk to bring him into a team culture.
The treatment he is getting in Anaheim is only lowering his value around the league. I previously compared him to Caufield and DeBrincat (in terms of value), now I see him as more of a Galchenyuk — a very talented young player that comes with some baggage.
Could probably still make a deal but I think Anaheim would have to be willing to absorb a contract in return to reduce the risk, someone like Anderson for example.

Hutson Reinbacher

Either way I don't think Arber gets enough ice time to make the sort of impact he's been making the past 5 games.</div></div>
He's only averaged 16:30 over the last 5 games though, so if you think he is making a good impact currently with that amount of ice time then I think you just contradicted yourself.
Edit: Something I don't love about MTL's defensive deployment is that Matheson has the 4th hardest matchups in the NHL and Guhle has the 7th hardest matchups. At times, I think they are overwhelmed, having a good 3rd pair (like Xhekaj - Savard right now for example) should help lessen the workload during those tough stretches throughout a season.

Shane, maybe you will answer where none of the other "never trade Xhekaj" crowd refuses to. Where do you see Xhekaj playing in 2025-26? 3rd pair, 2nd pair, top pair, is he a winger now? Because if it's 3rd pair... I just don't get it.</div></div>
I think Xhekaj is a top 4 defenseman (2nd Pair), but he will be playing 3rd Pair on MTL and that's great. So you're trading a top 4 D here with Evans for a top 6 C which is really a fair trade, but in my opinion Xhekaj's skillset is just too rare to trade and that's why I would keep him.

I'd keep Primeau over Turcotte, Barron over Krebs, and personally I'm not trading Xhekaj under any circumstances and I don't think Florida would do that trade anyways. MTL can draft their own Lundell without needing to trade Xhekaj, they can also use their $16M+ in cap space to bring in a forward through free agency they don't necessarily need to go the trade route anymore.

Which is a bigger risk
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>emoprettyboy</b></div><div>I'd say that taking Norris isn't a major risk for the Habs, since they're not a team that's looking to spend to the cap anyways, so can probably afford to take on one of these "idk hopefully get 50 games out of him" type of players, especially with the potentially really high upside, or non-zero chance of very-long term LTIR. I'd think that honestly, the biggest risk involved is the Sens moving Norris, because you're moving a guy who has shown that he can be an elite goalscorer in the NHL just out of fear that he could reinjure. either way, interesting thoughts!</div></div>
The habs aren't spending to the cap because they are rebuilding. Taking on an 6 years × $8M player that can't stay healthy makes no sense.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>KentMcNally</b></div><div>I tend to agree. However, Norris does have a 35 goal season already under his belt, which is something exciting for a center as young as he is. If he could get healthy and produce near that rate I don't know whether Dach replicates that production. Plus, the Norris salary for a 35 goal scorer in the future is not bad.</div></div>
Dach is also younger than Norris. In his first season with MTL he had 38 pts in 58 games... Norris had 35 pts in 56 games at the same age. Dach was expected to breakout this season before his injury. I'd take Dach at $3.4M over Norris at $7.9M any day and it isn't even close for me. Dach on his current contract is not a risk at all, unlike Norris and there is no upside to Norris over Dach as they arguably have similar potential.

Getting to an average top 6
Reading your post I think you nailed exactly what Montreal needs up front, I came to the same conclusion when I looked at MTL's projected roster next year if they didn't make any moves. That said I don't necessarily agree with the execution, I think the Monahan and Stephenson contracts are risky, not necessarily because of the AAV but because of the term.
Anyways, this was my offseason plan:
- Need a #2RW or a #2C and move Dach to the wing.
- Need a #3C, send Dvorak to the AHL.
- Trade Ylonen.
- Sign a veteran 3rd string goalie.
- Don't rush the D prospects.
- Draft BPA.
So regarding the options at C the 2 I have circled is bringing back Monahan or buying low on Dubois. At RW two options I like are Toffoli and Marchessault. I feel like all 4 of those players are realistic options for MTL. I think I've moved on from Zegras, the cost to acquire would be too high, there is no reason to trade the top 10 pick this year.
Edit:
- I really like the idea of getting Stephenson but I just think he will have lots of options over MTL. I agree he's like a better Danault, but he is also older than Danault when he signed his $5.5M × 6 year deal. If I was going for Stephenson I'd offer something like $6M × 4 years using Danault as a comparison, I'd throw in a 5th year to try get the deal done but that's probably as far as I'd be willing to go, $6M × 5 years.

Yes he does hurt us we are over the cap without LTIR and that means all performances bonuses are penalties to the cap the following season. We also can't accumulate extra cap space throughout the season. At some point that contract has to go.

Yeah I don't expect St. Louis to trade Thomas, but I'm not trading Caufield for him either why would MTL do that?
Caufield point a per game 0.721, Thomas at the similar stage of his career 0.680. So at a similar age Caufield is the better point producer and he is the better goal scorer too, which is more of a need for MTL.
Caufield's all around game has improved this season as well, as evidenced by his 49.67 xGF% compared to Thomas' 49.22 xGF% this season. They are quite similar in that department.
I wouldn't trade Caufield for Thomas straight up, and I'm not arguing against Blues fans who feel Thomas is untouchable as well for them - just pointing out that it makes absolutely no sense.

Why is it in fact clear that Hutson is not the next Adam Fox, Cale Makar, Quinn Hughes or Luke Hughes? I dont get the Luke Hughes comparison - they really arent that similar. Makar I would say is athletically on another level compared to Hutson. However, its quite possible that Hutson could become the next Quinn Hughes or Adam Fox. I don't think you could say either of these players would have definitively become what they are today when they were 19 or 20 years old, yeah its crazy to say Hutson is the next Q. Hughes (or Slafkovsky is the next Rantanen) - until one day it isn't so crazy anymore. Why do you think Krug is a good comparison for Hutson when Krug was never even a ppg player in college?
I have tempered expectations regarding Hutson, I don't even know if he'll start in the NHL next season, there is no rush. But I wouldn't bet against him on becoming an elite offensive defenseman in the NHL one day.

If there's one Montreal prospect who's going to disappoint, it's odds-on to be Lane Hutson because of how you Habs guys have overhyped him. I'd be willing to bet that he won't be in the top 3 contenders for the Calder Trophy when he breaks into the NHL.</div></div>
I mean, he can't be "wrong" it's just an opinion. Objectively speaking though, what Hutson is doing at the NCAA level is more impressive than what Zellweger did in junior.
Using an NHLe model, the NCAA is .194 compared to the WHL which is .141... using that conversion:
Hutson Projected WHL: 194 pts in 110 GP
Zellweger Actual WHL: 158 pts in 110 GP
I know NHLe is not perfect, but it contextualizes things a little bit. While I won't say definitively that Hutson is better than Zellweger I certainly wouldn't be making the argument that Zellweger is better than Hutson, and the argument that Zellweger is more valuable because he has 12 games of NHL experience holds no weight... that means nothing other than Zellweger was drafted a year earlier.

MTL is 8th in the league in faceoff percentage and they are still a bottom team in the league. Evans 51.6% is actually slightly below their team average of 52% so I don't know what you're going on about him for regarding faceoffs. MTL could resign Monahan who is on pace for 56 pts in 82 games and has a FO% of 55% and he could be their 3C... there is absolutely no argument for handing Evans the 3C role next season.
I'm not hating on the player, he plays his role fine... he's just not a 3C... WE can do better.
