McBain and Borgen
I can't see Seattle doing this.
Borgen has developed into a reasonable defenseman whom you are going to play with your #1 defender and has played in the Kraken's last 139 games (at least). Timmins is a dubious asset who has gotten into only 16 games this season and the third and fifth are even more speculative. This doesn't seem close to me.

Dont Think CGY Wants To Trade with Brad
The Flames would trade with the Leafs if the Leafs made the best offer for Tanev (or whoever)
Is Larsson going to make a difference to the Leafs this season to make that offer?

Neither the oft-traded Steeves nor the oft-traded Timmins is of interest to us, but we would probably take your 2024 fourth or 2025 third for Sam Carrick.

Kane Pesce Laughton
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>First of all, Canes aren’t going that. Second of all, can we just stop this Pesce-Nylander nonsense? It’s been what, 5-6 years since those rumors first came out. Since it hasn’t happened in that timeframe, why waste your time with another nonsensical proposal.</div></div>
Failing to see the sense in something doesn't make it nonsensical.
You can argue about the trade value and I would probably agree that Carolina wouldn't do this, but there's clear logic that would support a trade constructed around Nylander and Pesce.
Both teams are contenders, with the Canes being at minimum a top 5 team defensively while struggling to score goals. Among their biggest additions were a top pairing defenseman in Orlov and a player in TDA who had a lot of success in top 4 minutes for the Canes the season before last. Their biggest loss from this time last year was probably Pacioretty, who they expected to be a top line goal scorer. Their weakness going into this offseason was goal scoring. Pesce is a top-pair defensive minded D on an expiring contract.
The Leafs are at minimum a top 5 team offensively with a need to improve their backend. Among their biggest additions were a top line winger in Bertuzzi and a top 6 winger in Domi, along with what will be a full year of Knies. Their biggest loss from this time last year was probably Muzzin, who was a top-pair defensive minded D. Their weakness going into this offseason was the D core. Nylander is on an expiring contract and is a top line winger who can provide goal scoring.
So, the logic is clear. Carolina may not pay that much, but I think the Leafs are paying slightly too much in the Laughton trade and they come close to balancing out from a value standpoint.
Both teams would improve their chances of winning this year without handicapping their future. This is not comparable to 5-6 years ago, where many of these factors were not at play.

Qualify first that I'm not a Leafs fan. Did cheer for them in the playoffs last year, but in general not a Leafs fan.
I don't mind the idea of a 2 year deal, but thats more of a prove it deal...not cave to Nylander's demands. Lock him up for an additional $150k. 2 year deal for him would be $8.5M max.
Was he an $8.5M player last year during his best year? IMO no.

Don't understand the logic for Nylander signing for just two years, and then hoping for an eight year deal. Heck seven years starting next session maybe too much.
Haven't improved the defence much if at all. Why do folks still have this fantasy with PJ?

Nylander to CAL
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>SharkTank</b></div><div>That's 6 1/2 years from now. Nylander might get 10 mil AAV in UFA. But it's not guaranteed.
My point is players ask for numbers all the time. They don't always get it. Look at Bertuzzi. He was looking for 7 mil AAV on a long term contract.
Yzerman never gave it to him and neither did any other GM. He had to settle on a 1 year deal for 5.5 mil with Toronto.</div></div>
That guy and his Detroit buddies claimed that Bertuzzi was no way in hell signing with a Canadian team, nevermind the Leafs. And then hell froze over.
People claim all the time they know what's going on on here but usually don't, it's kind of funny.

Hawks decline as well. Can't see them trading away a 1st for Lilypad. No knock on him, but the Hawks aren't at a point yet where they are spending 1st rounders on rostered players.

The value isn't fair. A 3rd and a injury riddled prospect doesn't even cover the cost to dump Murray - if it did he'd be off the Leafs already. And you have a player and a 4th coming back to Leafs? That pretty much makes the cost to dump Murray almost nothing. This trade is terrible for Anaheim unless Murray was a need, which he isn't as long as Gibson is there.

The value isn't close to being fair because the third and the other two pieces are meaningless to us.
Your idea that a third-round pick means the same to Anaheim as it does to Toronto is really uninformed.

Anaheim has no use for Six Million Dollar Man Matt Murray, Pat Verbeek doesn't like small brittle forwards, and that third would be the seventh pick for us in next June's draft, so nothing in that package would even tempt us to consider it for free.

And how about going with Murray next year instead of Samsonov. And retain salary on Mitch, Auston, and Willy since you are planning on the next 1 or 2 years to be a re-grouping period.</div></div>
I think no on Marner. I think he's the only one that I'm dead confident will re-sign if we keep a good team around him. So by getting absolute hauls for Nylander and Matthews you can do that.
I think because of the value that those two can bring, if done right, a full blown rebuild won't be needed, more of a retool.

This might be unpopular but this core does not have enough fire or passion to get it done.
Time to rebuild, maybe it's the contract situations drivingmaybe it isn't.
My point is that stop accepting mediocrity, don't settle for 1 round playoff win.
We deserve better and this core is not gonna do it.
Bring back Dubas and go full on rebuild.

so do you not think we go even further into rebuild territory if we keep them a year, don't win, and then Matthews and Nylander just decide to walk and we get absolutely nothing?
Their success at their new destination would have absolutely nothing to do with what the right move would be for the Leafs if they can't get commitments from those guys.
