Kane Pesce Laughton

Created by: TMLBRIAN
Team: 2023-24 Toronto Maple Leafs
Initial Creation Date: Sep. 15, 2023
Published: Sep. 15, 2023
Salary Cap Mode: Basic
Description
Sign Kane with whatever available cap we have left
Nylander for Pesce + 1st + 3rd.
Laughton (50%) for Robertson + 1st + 3rd. - Which is a lot for a 3rd liner but at 1.5m cap for 3 years, I would do it.

This team is a lot more balanced in my mind. Still a lot of scoring power, better defence and a added experience and grit in the bottom 6.

I think the trades work for all parties as well.

Timmins can be added to Carolina if needed. I would just prefer keeping him for depth.

Thoughts?

Value would be fine, bit the Flyers seem pretty deadset on keeping Laughton around as a veteran leader and mentor.

Pesce would be adding another non-physical d-man, not what the leafs are looking for. Do you not think getting Laughton takes away ice-time from Kampf which makes him expendable?

I get that! It's why his value is as high as it is.

I think if they got a package like this, they should highly consider it. I am still quite high on Robertson though. Kid has unreal talent and unreal work ethic. If he can stay healthy he would be a fan favorite - He JUST turned 22. Still young but this will be a big year for him and his development.

Pesce is super defensive minded though. I know he is not physical and I know we need that as well. I am much happier with this D though.

I think Laughton mainly takes ice time away from Domi/Lafferty. I am confident Kampf will get 14 minutes a game. He will be on the ice for most defensive faceoffs. Laughton-Kampf-Jarnkrok in the D zones. Domi-Laughton-Jarnkrok in the ozone.

I assume Lafferty would get 8 minutes a game and Reaves is more like 4 minutes. The other 10 get quite a bit.

I don't think Kampf is expendable at all. He has proven to be extremely valuable the past 2 years.

First of all, Canes aren’t going that. Second of all, can we just stop this Pesce-Nylander nonsense? It’s been what, 5-6 years since those rumors first came out. Since it hasn’t happened in that timeframe, why waste your time with another nonsensical proposal.

I like this a lot, well done. A couple people are bringing up the fact Pesce is not physical, which is somewhat true in the sense that he doesn't throw a lot of hits, but he does make the hit when it's the right play and plays physical in the sense that he can win positional battles and protect the important areas of the ice. Laughton would be an ideal 3C and the Flyers would absolutely take that deal. I think the assets going out compared to the assets coming in are fair.

Love your approach to team building because I think this Leafs team would be cup favourites.

Failing to see the sense in something doesn't make it nonsensical.

You can argue about the trade value and I would probably agree that Carolina wouldn't do this, but there's clear logic that would support a trade constructed around Nylander and Pesce.

Both teams are contenders, with the Canes being at minimum a top 5 team defensively while struggling to score goals. Among their biggest additions were a top pairing defenseman in Orlov and a player in TDA who had a lot of success in top 4 minutes for the Canes the season before last. Their biggest loss from this time last year was probably Pacioretty, who they expected to be a top line goal scorer. Their weakness going into this offseason was goal scoring. Pesce is a top-pair defensive minded D on an expiring contract.

The Leafs are at minimum a top 5 team offensively with a need to improve their backend. Among their biggest additions were a top line winger in Bertuzzi and a top 6 winger in Domi, along with what will be a full year of Knies. Their biggest loss from this time last year was probably Muzzin, who was a top-pair defensive minded D. Their weakness going into this offseason was the D core. Nylander is on an expiring contract and is a top line winger who can provide goal scoring.

So, the logic is clear. Carolina may not pay that much, but I think the Leafs are paying slightly too much in the Laughton trade and they come close to balancing out from a value standpoint.

Both teams would improve their chances of winning this year without handicapping their future. This is not comparable to 5-6 years ago, where many of these factors were not at play.

The worst part of it is Carolina offered Pesce for Nylander and the leafs countered with Slavin for Nylander. Never has Pesce ever been enough and never will be. I can't wait till Willy resigns and this is all finally over.

I mean Pesce+1st+another high pick seems like a fair enough deal that helps both teams out... it solidifies the D-Core for the Leafs and gives the Hurricanes another offensive weapon

Canes pass. The entire point of the Pesce rumors would be to not lose him for nothing. Getting Nylander back doesn't fix that. It would need to be someone with term. AND you wouldn't see the Canes giving up a 1st and a roster player for a rental. Try again from the base, and scrap this idea.

I think Robertson is a solid player who has just had unfortunate luck with the injury bug. If the Flyers were willing to deal Laughts and if Robertson could stay healthy the whole season it could be a solid investment.
