The forwards who were taken after Kasper were Savoie, Geekie, Nazar, McGroarty, Lekkerimaki...since the draft day Kasper has proven to be the best forward out of that group, the rest are kinda underwhelming for 1st rounders. Snuggerrud is the only guy who has potentially looked as good as Kasper, but he's a winger. I'd rather have Kasper at C. So not exactly sure who you're referring to when you say Steve passed over this guy or over that guy for Kasper. The reality is the 2022 draft probably wasn't the best draft out there for talent and Steve took the best player available. Not sure what else you expect him to do.
When the wings came up to draft at 9th overall. there were no more 'elite forwards' available. Danielson was the best two way forward available. He fits the mold of a Ryan O'Reilly / Henrik Zetterberg type. That's my hope for him. I'll stop short of saying he'll be a Patrice Bergeron type because he's probably the best two way forward ever. But all those guys were never really elite players who will ever contend for a scoring title, but come playoff time, they are guys you want on your team. Conn Smythe type guys.
The Danielson is a middle six forward talk is just garbage. The same thing's were all said about Mo Seider who was projected to be a good 2nd pair Dman or very below average 1st pair Dman...why would Steve use a 6th overall pick to draft a 2nd pairing Dman...what was he thinking?!?! Now those same people are saying why is Steve using 9th Overall to draft a third line center...what was he thinking?!?! Danielson's numbers in the WHL are deceiving because he was on a very bad team without much talent around him. Give him a few quality teammates who can help to distribute the pressure off of him and he'd easily be a 100pt player in his draft year. I spent more time watching his play since he was drafted and now I see why they took him at 9th. The kid is a stud

Looks good otherwise - this years draft should be a heavy winger draft.</div></div>
Mazur was a ppg player in the NCAA and in his very short stint in the NHL was a ppg player. Soderblom was less than 0.5ppg in his AHL stint. Mazur is just a pure gamer and will be a Red Wing for a long time. Soderblom maybe has more potential if he figures his game out but at this stage he's still trying to figure out how to use his size to his full advantage. He's also not very reliable in his own zone yet. He had a lot of mental errors in his NHL time. If he figures that out, he'll be our #1 winger prospect for sure.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Schuyler</b></div><div>Goaltending and D look good but haven't really liked the direction Yzerman has taken with the forwards</div></div>
Defense and Goaltending takes longer to develop. I completely agree with the approach Yzerman has taken with heavily focusing on Defenders over Forwards in the first 5 drafts he's overseen. When you select a Dman it's usually minimum 3 years before they step onto NHL ice. Typically 4 years. Sometimes even up to 5 years. Forwards on the other hand can usually be ready to step onto NHL ice 1-2 years after being drafted. Kasper already got a look 1 year post draft. Raymond was a full time player 1 year post draft. I wouldn't be surprised to see Danielson get a look in the 2024/2025 season and be full time by 2025/2026.
Sometimes I questioned picks like taking Wallinder over Peterka when Wallinder is just getting into the AHL now and Peterka is already an effective NHL forward for Buffalo. But seeing more of Wallinder now and how fast he is and big he is, I believe he'll have the better impact once he's in the NHL. Or taking Buium over a guy like Stankoven, same thing. Finding good Defense is always harder than finding good Forwards. It's better to draft the D and find forwards through other means, such as trades or free agency like DeBrincat, Perron, etc. if you have to.

Value is great for TT. But where would he fit in? And how much does he want after his contract is up to extend him? TT will want a bigger raise over his current 5.4m cap hit for sure. I really can't see a roster spot for him with our younger forwards coming up who will be on cheaper contracts after next season. Kasper and Mazur are the two most likely to make the team in 2024-25. Rasmussen needs a new deal and he's getting a raise. Raymond needs a new deal and he's getting a big raise. Berggren needs a new deal. Probably better to just keep the 2nd and use it to acquire a player who has term left after this seasons or draft a player with it.

Not with the worst bottom six in the league they won't.
Sens have a very dangerous top line with Tkachuk, Stutzle & Giroux. After they have Norris and Batherson. The rest of the forwards group is rather average/below average/should be in the AHL.

Haha wuh? How is Detroit "built" through older free agents? You talk like Detroit's core is made up of free agents. Basically our free agents long term guys (anything more than 3 year contracts) are Copp, Compher, Holl and Chiarot (4 in total). The majority of free agents Detroit has signed are stopgap players on 1-2 year contracts until drafted players are ready. You have to ice a team after all and we're not going to rush any prospects. And the prospects are coming. Ottawa has simply been drafting with higher picks for longer, in other words they've been crappier for longer, hence why more of their own drafted an developed players are in the lineup compared to Detroit as of today. The Wings roster will look very different in 2 years when al lot of the players taken from 2019-2022 drafts who are currently doing very well in the AHL or SHL start arriving.
Larkin, Seider, Raymond, Rasmussen, Berggren. Veleno, all these guys are drafted. This number will increase when Edvinsson, Wallinder, Johannson, Kasper, Danielson, Sandin Pellikka, Mazur, Hanas, Cossa are all making the jump up. All stopgap guys will be gone. Walman, DeBrincat, Fabbri, Kostin were all traded for. Not Free agents.

Anytime Sens fans gloating about how that 1st is gonna be a lottery pick is a good time to remind them they are actually worse off because of DeBrincat. and remind them they got nowhere near what they though they deserved for Debrincat. Most Sens fans, including csick, thought they were getting the 17th overall (2023) + Berggren + a 2nd, some even thought they should get 9th Overall (2023) + Berggren + a 2nd. The worse of BOS/DET pick won't be as good as the 7th Overall in 2022. Kubalik isn't that great. He might pop 15 -20 in but he'll be bottom six in Ottawa by end of season. Then likely gone as a UFA. Sebrango ain't making the NHL as a full time player. He'll bounce back and forth between AHL and NHL at best. Doubt he makes 100 career games.

What ever happened there? o_O</div></div>
I still stand by that. They would have if Ottawa refused to accept the below market value offer Detroit gave them. He would have signed his QO at 9 million. They would have been forced to deal him at the deadline at 50% retained to a top contender as a pure rental as any team acquiring him knows he wont sign long term. His return would be crap, a late 1st for Ottawa at best. he would have then signed in Detroit as a UFA. He was very adamant that he only wanted Detroit long term. it was happening either way. Steve saw an opportunity to get him in the fold this season though instead of waiting for next and only had to give up the Boston 1st which he acquired for Bertuzzi. in essence, he turned Tyler Bertuzzi into Alex Debrincat and only had to give up Kubalik who had fallen out of favour with the coaching staff and Sebrango who is a career AHL Dman.

Doesn't matter even if both Detroit and Boston miss the playoffs. The pick you get won't be anywhere near as valuable as the 7th Overall you gave up originally. Boston will absolutely regress but will still be a contender for the playoffs, I still bet they make it as a wildcard, Detroit will progress and will be a contender for the playoffs, I would bet they come close but just miss, likely in the 85-90 pts range. Neither will be a bottom 10 team unless they suffer significant injuries. That pick at best will be around 15th Overall and it's coming in a weaker draft. The top 5-6 of 2024 is very good but then the chances to find an impact player drops off big time.
Drop all the LOOOOOL's and cry face emoji's you want. Hiding behind those LOOOOL's is a method of coping with the fact Ottawa totally flubbed on Alex DeBrincat and they are a worse team heading into 2023-2024 than they were heading into 2022-2023. Detroit improved, Buffalo improved. Ottawa regressed.

Scheifele and Hellebuyck trades
Hard decline from Detroit.
Goaltending isn't Detroit's problem. It's the players in front of the goalie. Husso may not have that extra gear like Hellebuyck or Bobrovsky does, but he is more than capable to maintain a 2.50 GAA and keep games close to give the team a chance to win each night. We just need better help in front of Husso. Cossa is the goalie of the future and he does have that game stealing ability. You know, guys like Hanas, Lombardi, the prospect we take with the 2024 1st and 2024 2nd will help with that. Besides, Hellebuyck wants like 9 million a year or something. Screw tying that much cap hit up in a goalie.

That one year is huge for me. Petry isn't going to move the needle at all but he's reliable enough. He can play RD for the next 2 seasons while ASP has one more year in the SHL and then a year in GR to develop. ASP will likely be ready to occupy that RD roster spot at the exact time Petry's contract ends. it would save Detroit from having to buy out the final year of Chiarots contract when Edvinsson, Wallinder, Johansson, ASP are all up with the big club and need a roster spot. Chiarots is a lefty and can play RD in the meantime but Petry would be more ideal with that right shot.

Either way we're stuck with an overpriced over the hill D man for the next 2 seasons but Petry being off the books in 2026 vs Chiarot being off the books in 2027 is the factor when we have so many high quality D prospects who will be more than ready for full time NHL duties by 2026. Edvinsson, Wallinder, Johansson, Sandin Pellikka. We don't need Chiarot clogging up a spot on the blueline at 4.75m cap hit after next season.

Honestly, this is the first Petry to Detroit trade I've seen that actually makes sense for Detroit. Even with the higher cap hit, it's worth it for Detroit because of the one year less term. Detroit can absorb the extra cap hit this season and next. Petry and Chairot bring a similar game but Petry being a right shot is more attractive.

Haha we're not giving you Berggren, a 1st and two 2nds so we can pay 10 million + for a winger AND take Murray off your hands....Maybe if Nylander was a bonafide center Detroit might think about it. But we already now have a 40 goal scoring winger and locked in at a much more reasonable cap hit at 7.8m. Even if DeBrincat doesn't hit 40, he's still good for around 30. Nylander, more specifically the cap hit that comes with him, is not needed. All that cap space will be going towards locking up Mo Seider long term and a new deal for Lucas Raymond.
