<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rtapp326</b></div><div>For the contracts:

Tavares isn’t getting more than McDavid so $12M is very reasonable.
$6M for Kovalchuk is the same amount Radulov for when he came back to the NHL.
Karlsson has a great year but it’s such a small sample size. I look at the summer of 2016 when Victor Rask signed for $4M x 6 years, and Schiefele and MacKinnon signed for around $6M x 6 years. All three were coming off of pretty good years, but their track record was short. Karlsson gets something in between. Maybe $5 is more reasonable, but not much more than that.
Theodore gets a “show me” contract, and takes a slight discount with the understanding that his team can be competitive if he does. His next contract at age 24 is his big one.
Miller put up solid offensive numbers, but his zone starts were also heavily offensive and he averaged less than 20 minutes per night. I’ve seen a lot of recency bias on here about his next contract because he played a lot in the finals, because Vegas was trailing for so much time. Miller is 25 this year. His GP/TOI/Pts line in 2015-16, 16-17, and 17-18 respectively are: 42/15:48/16, 61/15:49/13, 82/19:31/41. Compare that to the three years before Tyson Barrie signed his most recent $5.5M x 4yr contract as a 24 year old: 64/18:33/38, 80/21:22/53, 78/23:20/49. Factor in the rise in the cap, and $4M per is plenty for Miller.

I stand by the contract values I chose.

For the Karlsson Trade:

The ask is apparently a 1st round pick, a top prospect, and an NHL roster defenseman. Vegas could potentially give up Theodore or Schmidt, but if I’m Ottawa I would be really excited about Brannstrom’s upside if the Knights are willing to part with him. Any of those three get it done in my opinion. If the sens were okay with taking Miller instead, McPhee should pull the trigger without a second thought.</div></div>

Can you do one for the following year. Would like to see what the cap situation and lineup look like in 19-20.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>J_Sand3rs</b></div><div>First, Tavares is going to get $11.5M+. Sure, you can sign him and probably re-sign Seguin, but the Stars are pretty screwed when it comes to signing Lindell, Nuke, Faksa, Elie, Johns, Dickinson, and Hintz 2 years from now. Having $30M+ tied up in 3 players is not a good idea for any team. It greatly hamstrings what they are able to do in terms of signing their own players further on down the road. The Stars would be better off looking for someone like Stastny or JVR. They still get a top-6 forward that can put up some solid numbers, and they also get a a guy that will cost roughly $4M less than Tavares. That's $4M that the Stars would be able to put towards signing their pretty young team.

Buying out Spezza isn't a great idea either. The Stars have the cap this year (even if they sign a top-6 forward) to hold on to Spezza and I'd rather eat one more year of a bad contract than have that bad contract spread out over 2 years when we're going to be a little tighter on the Cap. Best case scenario, Stars are able to trade Spezza and retain half his contract. Realistically, the worst case scenario involves Dallas keeping Spezza as a 3rd/4th line center.

Also, you have to take notice of the potential Salary Bonuses. It looks like you have $1.8M in cap space, but in reality you are over $2M over the Salary Cap. Always assume that your players will hit their bonuses because if not, you run the risk of over shooting the Salary Cap, and that could really create some issues for Dallas over the next couple of years.

You also need to re-sign Smith and Heatherington. Both are pieces of the Stars future and will absolutely be getting contracts this offseason.

I think you're mind is in the right spot, and you have some good moves, I just don't see the Stars being able to go this route logistically.</div></div>

I agree with most of your sentiment. Was just doing this as a 2 year run before it all falls apart. In order to remain competitive after those 2 years, we would have to have some really good drafts.
