Deadline trade with OTT
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>BurgerBoss</b></div><div>I seriously don't think WPG is ready to give two of Niku, Roslovic and Appleton. They are all TOP6 forward prospects / TOP4 D prospects, and aside from Vesalainen they're also the top prospects of the team. It's just not worth to give 2/3 of them and a first - unless OTT takes a bad contract in the trade (Kulikov) and adds something to replace him.</div></div>
I won't disagree with that, but that's still the price, which is likely why the Jets didn't land him.
Instead Ottawa got Columbus' #1 & #4 prospects, and two firsts (the second being conditional). Sounds pretty close.

I think better could be had elsewhere. Just not really a fan of Petan, he's already 23 and has yet to establish anything as an NHL'er, with 4 seasons of mixed service to boot. Throw into this his size, I just don't see the interest. I think fans know it too, every Jets team on Cap Friendly has him on the outs in some way or another.
Niku is a more interesting prospect, specifically as a Dmen. However, he also is 22 and really hasn't established much. He deserves more of a pass being that Winnipeg has a decent D core in his way on a team trying to win, but beyond playing well in the AHL what has he really done? He is still a risk reward/7th rd pick player until he shows otherwise on the NHL level.
I am not saying this is the worst offer ever, but there's gotta be better young players/prospects in a another contending team's system...hell these aren't even the best in the JETS' system.
Duchene (along with Panarin) are the biggest fishes said to be on the market, I believe Ottawa needs to do better as they've really soured their fans of late.

2020 2nd

Looking back at Colorado's haul, you could argue they got more for a younger player...which makes this fair.

Yeah, I can't understand the obsession with getting back Duclair either. He's a 3rd liner at best, what's the big deal?
With all the smoke around the Rangers and Panarin, why are you giving away the Rangers' best trade chips for something they can get during the offseason for just money? Why give up the chance at picks/prospect AND Panarin? And if he doesn't join the Rangers through free agency, then he didn't want to play in NY after all, which means he wasn't signing an extension after the trade.
I hope you were just bored.

I am sure the Hawks do, but so do lots of teams across the league. I think he was referring to the value, not offering Ryan.
Duchene on his own could fetch a better package than this imo, never mind Karlsson. It makes no sense for Ottawa to package them together to one team unless they are cleaning out a team with a stacked farm system.

But secondly, you're completely correct with your analysis that my analysis of Brendan Smith isn't fair. But, if he doesn't return to form, a team that will be in cap hell like Toronto can't afford to have him at $3m. Every dollar counts for them. Also he was a traffic cone last year, just saying</div></div>
Again, this proposal was situational, mainly that these players have a solid year and are desirable at the deadline. DeAngelo and Smith are going to have lots of playing time to prove themselves either way. If they fail to, then this becomes moot anyway...as Toronto wouldn't be remotely interested and rightfully so.
The "traffic cone" and "isn't great" stuff just sounds like easy qualifiers that aren't really accurate. It's like people saying Halak is a horrible goalie...or Ho-Sang is a bust. Sure, I heard it on TV somewhere, or someone posted it on capfriendly...so it must be true! But, if you watch the games and dig into the stats, you come to understand there's a lot more to the story. Anyway...we can shelve their judgement till season's end, we shall see! By then it will completely earned as far as DeAngelo and Smith are concerned.

Brendan Smith has a MNTC...and why wouldn't the Rangers just keep Smith over Russell?
Samorukov is a LHD prospect...the Rangers have 6.
Quickie is a quiet, professional work horse who does whatever the team needs night in and night out. There isn't much desire to move him...even less for a 2nd and two pieces the Rangers don't need.

Let's make deal :cheers</div></div>
Yeah, I mean granted it might seem like a bit of a stretch to ask for Liljigren, Toronto could easily say he's "untouchable". But really, if you dissect each of the pieces being moved and put them into individual deals...the sum return has to be pretty high. The potential 1st rd pick alone could come close to a player on par (Liljigren was a 17th overall pick). It's not to say they wouldn't say no, just saying it isn't some outlandish offer. I would love to hear from some Leaf fans here.
I think Spooner's a better player than all the nonsense you hear out of Boston, he'd fit right in with Buffalo imo.

This is almost entirely true..except that some teams seem to get it wrong every time. Not sure if this is what he's eluding to, but as a Rangers fan I can speak to this better than most! lol
They've improved in recent years (thank the Lord!), but through the 2000's it seemed like year after year, every single pick didn't reach the NHL or have any significant career if they did make it. Yes, the players pointed out wouldn't necessarily be there if you reshuffled the deck, but at least draft an NHL'er...please! lol

I also would love for Smith to have a bounce back season but his value right now is 0 if not in the negative.</div></div>
Agreed, the Smith thing is a big "if", and his value is certainly non-existent atm. He's going to get every opportunity to reverse that this season, fingers crossed!
I saw the deal as a get now and pay later thing from Toronto's standpoint. It's certainly a negotiable thing, maybe include some combination of Pionk/Smith/DeAngelo (whichever 2 satisfies the deal). Again, this will come down to what each of these guys do during the upcoming season. Smith would seem to fit the need of D depth for a playoff push (given the bounce-back), and Pionk seems like more of a steady/sure thing than the high end/bang or bust DeAngelo?

The time frame for Trouba/Hayes deal doesn't line up imo. The Jets are holding onto Trouba this season for their push. If he goes, it's at the draft.
The Panarin deal is interesting, and I like that the 1st is 2020 ;)
Value wise the Yamamoto deal is OK...I'm just not a big fan of the prospect himself. He's sure talented enough, just feel like the Rangers have too many small forwards.
I posted a similar Georgie deal, Carolina seems like a good fit.
I'd rather keep Quickie personally...he's worth more to the team than the low 2nd. Players like him are undervalued and do a lot of the dirty work.

Zucc is a rental, but Brendan Smith is also a deadline piece that potentially fills a need for the playoff push...so, no it's not just Zucc.
Brendan Smith is a traffic cone? lol
He had a real bad season last year, no question...but not because he can't skate, don't get carried away. Again, I made specific mention of the bounce back season, otherwise the deal would obviously need a different piece. 3M for a middle pair defenseman is a bargain. My understanding was that Toronto needs depth on defense, he can be plugged in anywhere from 3 to 6D as he plays both sides. As for the cap, I am constantly seeing posts here by Toronto fans justifying how they have ample cap to resign their players and more...you sure they can't afford 3M???
DeAngelo would obviously need to be resigned, but he would be an RFA...how is that worth nothing?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sidsoul88</b></div><div>At first glance that's a huge overpay for Liljegren, but on second though, that's actually kinda of an underpay. The only useful piece of that deal is the TB 2nd which could be a first if they win the cup. Otherwise, Zucc is a FA and really doesn't fit in the top 6, and DeAngelo and Smith are highly inferior to Liljegren. Liljegren may still be a year away from the big league but I don't think TOR panics and floods their roster and drains their cap with Smith and DeAngelo. I think this is a case of quality vs quantity and frankly the rangers don't have the quality.</div></div>
You're leaving out the deadline aspect of making the deal in the first place. Teams pay a steep price for rentals in the hope of winning a cup, which is Toronto's presumed motivation in the first place. This deal not only offers the rental = cup aspect, it also gives future pieces in DeAngelo and the 2nd/1st, so they get kind of a "cake and eat it too" deal. They also have Smith's services for 2 more seasons. I am not saying there isn't wiggle room to make the deal right, for sure....but it's in the ballpark.

2019 Cap Space
You started out OK, but got progressively worse..
Pominville has full NTC & NMC, and I can't see Buffalo doing him dirty like that anyway. Maybe just drop everything out of the deal and make it Zucc for the 1st.
The Hayes deal is fine value wise, Balcers is a decent enough prospect, though I am not sure the Rangers need another LW.
I am assuming the Smith deal is with the idea that he had a good season. If this is the case, he could get a 2nd on his own. Names is certainly worth more than a 2nd...and I don't see the need to move him anyway.
By the deadline, Spooner should be able to fetch that type of deal on his own (a pick and prospect). Your giving away DeAngelo for free..and then giving them a 2nd?? You like Abramov that much?? He's got talent, but the guy is 5'9! The last thing the Rangers need is another smallish forward. Even still, this deal is way out of wack value wise... pretty ugly!
And finally the Vesey deal...huh? I know the title of your post is cap space...but your kind of throwing the baby out with the water here. I am by no means a huge Vesey fan, but there's certainly a better market for him than a 4th rd pick and a rental the Rangers don't need.
Outside of getting Balcers, I don't see that this helped the team a bunch beyond some cash that could have been saved in other ways.

Make them great again!!!!!!!
Yeah this is a confusing one on several levels:
From the player side...
I am assuming your moving Staal for Lucic because Edmonton would prefer the defenseman over the winger? Both players have NMC...and both players would have reason to say "no thanks". Staal has spent his entire career in NY, he'd have to uproot his family, Lucic would be moving from playoff team to a rebuilding team. I maybe could see Lucic saying yes, can't see Staal agreeing.
From the Rangers side...
Staal is one season away from a very reasonable buyout...why would the Rangers want to add 2 more years with Lucic? For a middling LHD prospect that the Rangers don't need?...for 2 2nd rounders? I am not sure that's worth their time.
From Edmonton's side...
They are likely to see Staal and Lucic as a wash (I don't agree..but that's what I am sure they would contend). The two prospects are of roughly equal value...so their going to ask why they should give up 2 2nd round picks?
And lastly...
Your title is very deceiving. I hate the snow angel machine as much as the next guy, but getting rid of Staal to bring in Lucic and a couple of picks makes them great again?? lol

So maybe Seguin sees no cup runs in Dallas and wants to test the market. That being said, there are far better opportunities to join actual contending teams and give himself a real shot at winning the cup. No Montreal, Edmonton and Calgary are not real contenders. At least not for a few years.</div></div>
I agree, there is a half way decent chance he leaves. They will likely have to overpay for 8 years to hold onto him. What I meant to say was Dallas would have to really mess things up to lose him to free agency. He has a MNTC, but they absolutely cannot afford to Tavares him.

It's nice to dream, but with the current state of Montreal combined with how poor a job Dallas would have to do to lose him...I just can't see Seguin going to the Canadiens. Hard Tank + Hard Pivot to Contention Via Free Agency
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>VOFS</b></div><div>I'm super aware that everything you do matters, but the purpose of this CF roster wasn't to predict what the Rangers will do, it was to illustrate what the Rangers could do. Sure Stone and Eberle might turn them down, but the upcoming free agency class is so stacked that there will be help of that nature available; and that's the whole purpose of this exercise. The context here is that I've been involved in a long-running debate (on the Rangers SBNation site) about whether or not the Rangers should tank this upcoming season by trading away all non-core pieces followed by a hard pivot into contention via free agency. I made this just to show what that process could look like.
And there's no Hughes because assuming the Rangers tank will be successful enough to grab him is too optimistic, even for me.</div></div>
I get it, but what they "could do" is still very dependent on the moves you make, players you get back, players promoted, cap space etc. It's hard to predict or comment or see the idea pan out when you really haven't completed the painting.
Definitely agree about Hughes, the Rangers just aren't that lucky! lol Was just wondering if the player they end up drafting in this scenario is someone that can be penciled in right away.

I am not sure I understand the Klefbom trade. The Rangers have a slew of much cheaper/controlled options at LHD that should at least equal his play. They would be better suited imo keeping Krieder (and Hajek) and moving Vesey, or trading Krieder for a piece of greater need than LHD.
The same thing is true for Derek Grant, the Rangers have cheaper and controlled options in their system.
I know patience isn't a Ranger fan virtue, but we're all just gonna have to sit back and let the prospects get their shots.
What happened to Kevin Hayes?
Pull Howden out of that deal for Trouba, and give them Hayes' rights with Names and DeAngelo.
Panarin I like, simply because at this point there are no safe bet/sure fire elite players on this team. Panarin would provide that and allow the young guys to try and flourish behind him. Now that he signs with the Rangers...is another story.

Ottawa has been trying to move EK for a while. His pending UFA status is likely the biggest hurdle for teams looking to trade for him, as he seems intent on being in charge of where he signs. Essentially that makes him a "rental only" piece, which has Ottawa in a pickle because the return becomes underwhelming for a generational talent and the face of the team.
It's questionable that he would even sign with Toronto, as rumors have him wanting out of Canada in general. And if this is meant as a rental....just no lol.
Then there's the price...Toronto has a very slippery slope ahead of them cap wise, you really want to sign another player to a giant contract for 7 years?
IF he were to sign...I think Nylander OR Liljegren and the 1st with maybe a 2nd/ 3rd tier prospect would make more sense.
