Reasonable Patch trade
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>StuTheSniper</b></div><div>That trade has been speculated for a while... McDavid feeding Patch would be unreal.
On a side note: looks like you're taking Veleno pretty high. Can't see the Habs taking him unless they find themselves with a pick in the 12-17 range.</div></div>
Yeah I'm definitely not the first one to put that trade out there lol, and I think it makes a ton of sense for both teams. And even though Pacioretty only has one year of contract left, if it works out with McDavid (which I really think it would), I'm sure Edmonton could work out an extension pretty easily.
I've watched Veleno a few times this season and at the Mem Cup last year, and yeah I am really, really high on him. His stock really cratered early this season because he produced below expectations on a bad team, but since being traded to a good team he's been on fire. He's McKeen's top ranked center in the draft now. If the Habs have Dahlin, Zadina, Tkatchuk or Svechnikov available to them then yeah I can't see them picking Veleno. But the more I think on it, basically any draft position after that I think they should pick him. Given how badly they need good young talent at center I don't think they can afford to pass on a 6'1 200 center who has exceptional vision, very good skating, good puck protection skills, already 3 full seasons of junior experience, and is from Mtl to boot. I actually think it's a no brainer.

If he's traded at the draft Florida might be interested. Adding a veteran scoring winger to their young core in exchange for a prospect could be a move that would make sense for them. Even if it's a short term gain, they really need to make the playoffs next season and adding a 30 goal sniper would help them a lot.

Which Pacioretty trade makes the most sense (Comment below)
I'm a big Pacioretty fan but I don't think he's going to command those kinds of returns. At best it's going to be one of those prospects with a pick in each of those scenarios I think, not two top prospects...
But to answer your question I'd happiest as a Habs fan with the LA trade. I think Vilardi and Clague are gonna be legit and Clague is a lefty which is what we need. But yeah I'd also definitely settle for just Vilardi coming back for Pacioretty but I don't think LA would do even that.
Most realistic trade is probably the Minny one. Ek seems like a solid two way player but with more limited offensive upside than these other prospects.

Yeah I pretty much agree, I think Pacioretty might make more sense for the Habs given his age and contract situation, but I'm not sure it's as good of a fit for Calgary. Maybe they could move Tkatchuk to the RW though...

Yeah of course he is now, but in 1 or 2 years time? Could be a different story, Bennett is still very young. Gally was just starting his first season in the NHL at Bennett's age.

He's obviously not a real first line center yet, but common he's only 21 and look at his pre-draft numbers, he's got upside and just needs a better opportunity. He could be a top 6 center for Montreal in the future.

every teams best prospect
My rank of Mtl prospects based on what I've seen of them (about 5-10 games each at various levels, except McNiven, I've only seen him twice in the OHL)
1. Poehling (he is no.1 by far imo)
2. Juulsen
3. Scherbak
4. McNiven
Based on stats it seems like a pretty big drop off after that, I'd guess Jake Evans or Josh Brook at no. 5, but I haven't seen them much...

My latest dissapointement came when I was hoping the Habs would draft Debrincat but nooope they decided to trade the pick to CHI for a third-line grinder and now the Hawks has one of the top rookie this year in Debrincat :(</div></div>
Yeah I hear you about Debrincat, and it actually gets worse with that draft lol because Trevor Timmins confirmed afterward with french media that they were very high on defenseman Samuel Girard, who was still available at 45 which was the other pick the Habs sent to Chicago for Shaw, and Timmins all but confirmed they would've picked him at that spot :(.
I actually don't hate Bergevin as much as other people, but that Shaw trade really hurts given who was still available in that draft, it's indefensible. On the whole though I think at least our amateur scouting is quite good (eg.: Sergachev, Juulsen, Scherbak, Lehkonen all solid picks) and Debrincat + Girard would've been excellent, but questionable moves by management have hurt player development, no doubt about it.

Yeah I agree it's super far fetched lol. Just throwing it out there since there was a rumour flying around that the Blues came calling about Carey, and Thomas and Allen were involved... Even though Thomas is highly rated I think it would still take another prospect, and I can't see them trading Kyrou or Fabbri so I picked Kostin. You have to admit the Habs offense on this roster would have potential.
On the draft if the Habs can't get Zadina or Dahlin too, I hope they go with Hughes, really love his upside and with a full NCAA season already under his belt come draft time, he might not be so far from the NHL.

We need to trade Patch for a good center prospect
I really like Vilardi, so I'd be interested in that one too, but I don't think he's as close to the NHL as Roslovic, and I think his injury is a back one too right? Those are always a little more concerning than standard injuries. The way Roslovic is producing in the AHL this season I think he's NHL ready next season, but yeah that's also why Winnipeg might be reluctant to let him go... They already have a ton of good young players on their roster too though, so adding a veteran proven scorer could be a good move.

Pacioretty to Nashville? a possibility? (his value)
I like the two players Habs are getting back but I can't see Nashville paying that much for only a year and a half of Patch. But also the bigger problem is no center for the Habs, they absolutely need to get a C back for Patch since they couldn't do it with Sergachev, and there's no top end C in the upcoming draft. A C for Patch now is the Habs' only real chance to address a 2 decade old problem

the reality is being a multiple 30 goal scorer isnt as common as you pretend it is</div></div>
I am taking into account what both players have done, but a trade is a not a contract negotiation. You have to project what both players will do with your own group of players in the future. Plus age and contract are major factors in determining trade value.

"Manipulating the narrative" I'm just citing facts about the Kane trade, and why it obviously isn't a good template to use for a potential Pacioretty trade. The comp I used is much closer to the mark, don't you agree?

Kane was 24 years old with multiple years left on his contract. Patch will be 30 next season, which is also his last before becoming UFA, so I don't think it's comparable at all. Not to mention, Patch is not a 30 goal scorer this season. Will he be again? Maybe, especially with a talented playmaking center to play with, but also maybe not. It's not uncommon at all for goal scoring wingers' production to start declining at 30 years old, especially those whose speed is important to their scoring, and Patch seems to have lost a step this season. A better comparable would probably be the Marian Gaborik trade to Columbus, which saw Derek Brassard (a similar player to RNH) being the main piece going the other way.
Nugent-Hopkins is 5 years younger than Patch, plays a more important position, is a very good defensive player, and is also more productive than Pacioretty this season. Given where they both are right now, he is easily the more valuable player.

Time to piss people off on the internet again!
Interesting article, I really like Travis Yost's column. I'm not sure I agree with his premise at the outset when he claims the trade has backfired though, and that it forced the Habs in a win-now mode, and the contract is horrible. Because then he goes on to describe how Weber is still an elite first pairing defensive defenseman, which is exactly what the Habs wanted and expected. I guess the view on the contract and "win-now" idea all depends on how much longer you think Weber can keep up this level of play. I really don't think it's inconceivable that he could maintain something reasonably close to this level for the next 5 seasons, after which we might see a slight dropoff, similar to Chara (who is still a pretty good defender at 40). If that's the case then the criticism about the contract being awful and the move putting the Habs in win-now mode just don't hold water in my opinion.
Even if the next move is a retool/rebuild, re-whatever-you-wanna-call-it, moving Weber is not the correct move, it would decimate a weak defense even more, with no replacement waiting in the wings. Elements of the core need to be changed for sure, but I would be targeting guys like Pacioretty and Galchenyuk well before I think about trading Weber. The Habs should also seriously consider selling off assets early this season if it does not turn around in the next two weeks, to guarantee a top 5 pick in the upcoming draft. Things change very fast in the NHL, making the right impact trade and picking up an elite young player for free in the draft could revamp this roster into something very competitive as soon as next season.
Side note, retaining salary on both Price and Weber's contract would absolutely wreck this organization for the next decade :S

Interesting for sure, but I think Draisaitl is too steep a price to pay for the Oilers in this deal, given that there's a lot of uncertainty about what Galchenyuk will bring offensively in return. And as much as the Oilers need better goaltending, beyond McJesus and Leon they also have a really hard time scoring, so I'm not sure this would be worth it for them...

The good Ol' recipe - great defense, average to mediocre offense
Well done I think this is pretty realistic. Agreed that OEL is not a god like many here are claiming lol, but he'd be a nice fit next to Weber. Arizona could also use a veteran sniper like Patch, and I could see them going for Petry too given his great analytics numbers. Good riddance if we can find a taker for that contract, which has an NMC kicking in next season. With Juulsen hopefully getting close and good UFAs available this summer, moving Petry sounds like a pretty good idea at this point.
Forwards definitely look sketchy though, would have to hope Evans, Scherbak, Poehling develop into NHLers quickly to add some depth...

You're underestimating Galchenyuk and Lindgren's potential value as young players. OEL is currently a league worst -15 who only has a year and a half of contract left. Obviously he's capable of much better but let's also not get carried away, he's no Erik Karlsson.

Yeah I pretty much agree. Then again I'm just not sure what the heck to expect from Galchenyuk here anymore, and if ever Arizona was even remotely interested in him (or Pacioretty for that matter) then I think the Habs would need to explore something like this. Either way two things need to be added to the roster, a 1D and a 1C, most likely one has to come via trade and the other via a top 5 pick in the upcoming draft. If ever OEL was available, which despite what Chayka insists, I think is a very real possibility, Habs need to be in on that. An OEL-Weber top pairing completely changes the whole D unit and the team.

Pacioretty to Vegas
Yeah I don't see the fit from Vegas' perspective, a year and a half of Pacioretty is not at all what they will be looking for right now. They're building for the long term, they will sell off Perron and Neal at the deadline for even more prospects and picks to add to what they already have. Once they become real playoff contenders every season then they will look to add some veterans like Pacioretty to the mix via free agency or trade, but that's still a few years away.

No. But I love or chances, we have a great stable of young talent and more to back them up in the system. The whole Habs system is broken as it was in the Kessel era of Toronto, talent was around just not the right mix at the right time. Gotta blow it up in Montreal.</div></div>
Thanks for the reply. I actually do think the above roster would be very competitive, 2 impactful players like them at key spots can completely transform a team because it has a trickle down effect on the rest of the roster. Dahlin-Weber would probably be reminiscent of Josi-Weber and one of the better top pairings in the game. I think Tavares-Pacioretty could be pretty explosive and Drouin-Galchenyuk on a second line is good depth. If we assume that Price returns to being a top 5 goalie in the game, all of that combined could be good enough to make significant noise in the playoffs in my opinion. Win it all? Tough to say, it's a bit of a crap shoot these days with the parity, but yes I think they'd have an actual chance.

Again goes to show your a troll, Juulsen and Schlemko have been injured since training camp. Alzner is way better than Emelin, and Mete is playing how MTL fans wanted Beaulieu to play but he never did. What is really hurting the Habs d-core is no Markov, and that is one of the reasons why Bergevin is getting a lot of criticism.
The other Habs Dmen issues is how their depth guys aren’t stepping up (Davidson, Morrow, Benn) and how poorly Petry has been playing.
Right now Benn and Petry have been playing a lot better, and the depth issue should be fixed when Juulsen and Schlemko return to play. Habs right now have 5wins in their last 6. The panic period at the beginning of this season is over and things have settled down. So again, go troll somewhere else.</div></div>

Price wont stay with the Habs this season according to an insider
Assuming Arizona's first rounder is the first overall pick (only way Habs would even entertain this), I'm not sure the Coyotes would want to make this move. Sure they could use the goaltending help and by all accounts they want to start winning now, but their core is still young so wouldn't it make more sense for them to add a generational young defenseman to that mix? Then they can trade OEL for goaltending help and get someone younger/cheaper than Price. I just don't see it happening, and in fact even if the Habs did want to trade Price, I honestly don't see a fit anywhere in the league where they would get fair value back that would fit their needs (elite number 1 defenseman or center), no other team in a position to make that deal would do it...
