Kreider
I personally like the trade for the Habs, a big fast power forward who drives the net has been a big need for this team for quite some time, and would fit in with Julien's style of play much better than Galchenyuk. It's not as if Kreider is a grinder either, he's good for 20 almost guaranteed and showed last season he has real 30 goal potential. We all know Galchenyuk has great skills and big potential, overall a higher offensive upside than Kreider, but it's still a mystery as to whether he will actually achieve that potential in Montreal, and whether Julien will ever trust him enough to put him in a position to do so.
Kreider is also a more effective player at 5 on 5 hockey, especially last season he was way more productive than Galchenyuk in this regard. Lots of playoff experience and good goal scoring average in the post-season for Kreider too. All of that makes up for the age difference imo. Contracts are nearly identical so that makes sense too. In this lineup I would slot him LW next to Drouin, even though Byron has been great on that line, having a bigger winger there who still brings speed and can play big minutes would be a great addition to this roster. Not sure how the Rangers have used him on the PP but seems to me he would be a good fit to go right in front of the net on our first unit.
It would not be an easy call to cut ties with Galchenyuk, but I would make this trade.

Galchenyuk
Habs fan here, that's not enough for Galchenyuk imo, Kreider would make a lot more sense for the Habs and would be the price to pay. They could certainly use a centreman but Danault brings almost the same as Hayes, and he already has decent chemistry with Pacioretty. Habs could also badly use a big productive winger who drives the net, and Kreider fits that bill. Their remaining contracts are almost identical too so that trade makes sense from a cap management perspective too.

They are -20 through 8 games, the whole damn team's been a defensive liability lol, and they can't even score either so might as well try a line with three offensive threats. Next several games are at home so Julien can control the matchups. Plus there's nothing to lose now, the "safe" approach they've been using has failed miserably, they need to be aggressive and gamble a bit. I'll be very disappointed if 27-92-17 isn't a line...

Pretty much exactly what I would do also.
Maybe just have Benn on the right though since he seems a lot more comfortable on that side.

Scherbak was on fire in Laval, 9pts (1g 8a) in 6 games, give some of those good vibes to Chucky!</div></div>
Agreed and they also seemed to have chemistry any time they played together in pre-season. It's only exhibition but it's at least something to go on, and I don't wanna see either Galchenyuk or Scherbak on a 4th line, we need some skill up front. I'd go Galchenyuk-Drouin-Scherbak, it might be sketchy defensively but who cares at this point the team can't get any worse defensively anyways.

Babcock loves him to death . He said to me this week that if Bergy want him out he will gladly take him ... We know each other from Mcgill ... The cap problem are not real since with Martin off the books , Weber won,t even finish his contract and the penalty goes to Nashville which would be intice to pay to have him back and not get cap space penalty over it .. so good value at 36 years old when is 3M contract isn't good for him ..</div></div>
Oh for sure I know Babs loves him, he can't say enough good things about him to the press based on his time with him at the Olympics and World Cup. I just don't like the move and return from the Habs' point of view. In my opinion Weber still has 5-7 years left of very good hockey and his leadership is off the charts. He can remain the pillar on defense for a while longer, and if we revamp the forwards and maybe find a more legit partner for him to play with, he'll still be good to go after those changes are made (hopefully soon).

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Klink2014</b></div><div>
You're right and the Schultz trade worked out great for them, but they gave up a 3rd because it was a reclamation project. Galchenyuk was skating on the 4th line wing if I'm not mistaken, so his value is very low. Maatta is PITs second best defensemen right now, so his value is high</div></div>
That's true but both players have fairly long track records in the NHL already, I don't think their value can be tied only to how they are playing specifically right now...

I totally agree about Galchenyuk being a winger, but Darren Dreger specifically mentioned his name in connection with Pitt's search for a C so that's pretty much the only reason I did this roster. I was really surprised that was the info Dreger got but it is what it is.
And for Maatta I've seen a lot of Pens fans on here saying he's playing great, but is he really indispensable though? He's still their fifth ranked defenseman in total ice time so far this season, and more importantly 5th by a pretty big margin at 5 on 5... Seems to me like he can be sacrificed to add another potentially very dynamic offensive forward like Galchenyuk.

Yeah :D I'm doing a little more reading on Sprong though, I think it's probably way too greedy to include him in this trade unless Mtl adds more lol... But we can dream right?
I do think Galchenyuk for Maatta makes a lot of sense though.

This trade undervalues Galchenyuk a lot, and Mtl will certainly not be retaining salary in any trade involving him (they will just keep him at that point).
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>bmoolb</b></div><div>Montreal doesn't need another goalie prospect, they already have Lindgren and McNiven. Would take Maatta and picks or Sprong and picks.</div></div>
Indeed I think Maatta would be a logical player to include in a Pitt trade.

Habs fan here, Bennett would be interesting but I think we'd also need a quality good skating LD as part of that deal. Bennett has potential but also has yet to really establish himself in the NHL. Galchenyuk, while inconsistent, has been very productive during stretches and has a 30 goal season under his belt...

I'm not so sure... If we're being honest DLR and Reway are like C+ to B- (at the absolute most) prospects, and at least a first rounder is a given for Neal imo. I think Vegas will actually get more than this for the Real Deal at the deadline.

Yes I do believe they'll be in a playoff position. People are overreacting after only 5 games, this team is playing well and has potential. With a normal performance from their goalie in their last game they handily beat what many consider the hottest team in the league.

Galchenyuk to Islanders for de Haan and Beauvillier
I think Habs need to address the center position much more than D with a Galchenyuk trade. Mete-Weber, Alzner-Petry can be a solid top 4 for many seasons once they get adjusted to playing together. Drouin looks pretty good down the middle but they are paper thin at C after that. Need more size and skill there, Brock Nelson might be a good option from the Isles, 6'3 and 3 consecutive 20 goal seasons, still young.

Fair enough, only reason I added is because Galchenyuk is only signed 3 more years going into UFA, whereas Reinhart is younger and can be under team control for much longer... So I added a young asset (admittedly of very low value tho lol)

I think you could potentially trade for Galchenyuk but imo it would cost you Reinhart, a very comparable player. Say what you will about Bergevin he has made fair trades for the most part.

Duchene

Montreal will most likely have to send Plekanec, a first, Sergachey/Juulsen, and a decent young forward prospect</i></div></div>Yeah Pleks is included because I think any deal would have to be more or less cap neutral, and he's the logical guy. The way I see it Col needs to look 2-3 years down the road anyways, so taking Plek short term is part of the price to pay to get a defenseman of Sergachev's calibre. I could see changing that second to a first, and maybe a B prospect forward but nothing more. I don't see too many other places that Colorado would be able to get an elite young defenseman with 1st pairing potential like Sergy, which is something they badly need. With this move their core 2-3 years from now is MacKinnon, Jost, Rantanen, Landeskog, Sergachev and Johnson. Either way though they need an elite defenseman to be part of it if they're gonna be any good.

What it takes to get Duchene
Yeah, overpay in my opinion. I agree it starts with Sergachev for sure but yikes adding Gally and a first on top of that? Too much to give up for Duchene I think, especially since he's only under contract for the next 2 and a half seasons. Gally has another 4 on a fair contract and Sergy has massive upside starting potentially as soon as next season, and he likely won't even reach ufa status until the next CBA. I don't think I would add much on top Sergy, that's already a lot and we know how desperate Col is for a defenseman. Let's not forget Hall was traded for Larsson :D
