Pettersson and Hughes need new contracts this off season, and the only core player Benning has locked in long-term is Thatcher Demko.
Vancouver is still far from being a contender and Benning has cap strapped them. Incredible that this man still has a job.
Giving a three year contract + NTC to a guy with 11 point so far this year demonstrates that Benning hasn't learned from his history of bad contracts.

Do these TDL moves work
Not really.
TOR isn't moving Sandin for a 4th liner and a goalie who already once failed in Toronto.
VGK don't really need yet another wingers.
Svechnikov was just waived. He has virtually no trade value. And Nemeth is not worth this much.

Kotkaniemi are you pranking us right now?
Here are some recent comparables:
$5,000,000 x 5 years (age 25) | after 60 NHL games | career 0.911 SV% | 2.90 GAA | Thatcher Demko
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$1,300,000 x 1 years (age 25) | after 60 NHL games | career 0.911 SV% | 2.90 GAA | Linus Ullmark
$1,500,000 x 3 years (age 24) | after 50 NHL games | career 0.924 SV% | 2.40 GAA | Juuse Saros
$1,600,000 x 2 years (age 26) | after 40 NHL games | career 0.928 SV% | 2.30 GAA | Jack Campbell
$2,400,000 x 2 years (age 24) | after 80 NHL games | career 0.913 SV% | 2.80 GAA | Alex Georgiev
$2,800,000 x 3 years (age 24) | after 70 NHL games | career 0.916 SV% | 2.70 GAA | Mack Blackwood
And here's a guy who actually deserved Demko's contract:
$5,000,000 x 5 years (age 25) | after --60 NHL games | career 0.911 SV% | 2.90 GAA | Thatcher Demko
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
$5,000,000 x 5 years (age 28) | after 300 NHL games | career 0.919 SV% | 2.70 GAA | Robin Lehner (career totals)
$5,000,000 x 5 years (age 28) | after --80 NHL games | career 0.925 SV% | 2.40 GAA | Robin Lehner (prior 2 years)
Lehner played 5 times more NHL games than Demko has.
Lehner had a FAR better save percentage than Demko has.
Lehner was also a UFA even though he was still quite young.
Pettersson and Hughes are 100% loving this deal, and Benning just lost all his leverage in those negotiations.
And this is just such an unnecessary risk for a goalie with 60 games played, especially for a capped out team.

Aside from that, you're right about LD, and I think we're definitely getting better at RD. But for the RW, can't Amirov also play RW, as well as guys like Hallander, Abramov, and Abruzze? I think we're set in the RW department, as well as LW.

Absolutely, all those guys are 2-3 years away. Hallander and Holmberg look the closest but project to play the wing. SDA and Abramov look to have the highest ceiling skill wise, but lack the size you’d want in a top 6C. There’s definitely nobody in the organization that could replace Mathews or Tavares should anyone of them go down, but what organization does. Unless you draft one 1st overall.
My feeling is aside from Meittinen, there isn’t a true RW after him. Hopefully one of Gogolev, McKenna, Brazeau can fill in the gaps

Quoting: TheNorthStar

I think the leafs should try to look for more centers and goalies, but aside from that, I think the leafs have a really nice prospect pool.

Personally, I think they are really solid down the middle:
C
SDA
Abramov
Hirvonen
Holmberg
Hallander
Abruzzese
Now it’s very possible they don’t stay at C but the depth is there. Absolutely they need more goalie prospects! IMO they are set at LD, getting better with RD but really need more RW. I think Meittinen was a steal, Steeves looks really good, and McKenna has produced well for the Marlies this year. That would be a position I would look at adding to.

SDA isn't that great
Amirov Robbie Sandin Lilje should be untouchable unless a blockbuster trade comes along

I’ve seen some sites that list him as a centre. I’m fairly sure that Steeves has played most of this year as a right-winger. I’m sure the door isn’t closed for a return to centre down the road. However, I believe that he will begin his professional career as a right wing.

Having watched him an ND while watching the Hawks own prospect Landon Slaggert...Nice signing for sure! His ceiling is pretty low, but his floor is pretty high. His absolute highest ceiling (INO) is a 3rd line winger that can put up a few points. WHICH isn't bad!!! That's a good signing. I just wouldn't put him in a top 6 role or trade him for even a 4th rounder.

Montreal Canadiens signed Cole Caufield (3 Years / $1,308,333 AAV)
Wow, the amount of hate for the habs is ridiculous here. Can fans not be excited for a prospect? No one was arguing about how good Zegras was when he signed. And yet when obvious steals like Caufield, Romanov, & Höglander are signed, people start whining about how bad they are, just because they dislike the team or have a problem with the media. If you don’t like the media, don’t listen to/read it then. Yeah, I’m not a fan of the Leafs, but you’d never see me saying that Nick Robertson is a bust when he’s clearly a steal.
No one here is saying exactly what he’s going to do in the NHL, just that they’re excited to see Caufield play.
And no, Nick Robertson does not suck, so can everyone please stop trying to stir the pot and create more argument.
