Toronto Maple Leafs signed Denis Malgin (1 Year / $700,000 AAV)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Claesson4Norris</b></div><div>Basically the definition of "guy". Pretty tough to have a strong opinion on this one.</div></div>
Probably the best thing about him is that he's still only 23, already has 192 NHL games under his belt, and has scored 60 points in those games. If he can play 10 minutes a night, not cost us any goals, and then chip in with some points, I don't know what more you can ask of the guy at league minimum.
I'll agree somewhat that he's just "Guy" but he had an 18 goal, 35 point pace season at 21 with Florida (11G, 11A, 22P in 55GP) so clearly there's some ability to be tapped into there.
And additionally, if the Leafs are going to improve their defence, and by all indications it really sounds like they want to, potentially going for the big fish in Pietrangelo, they'll need more "Guy"s and Malgin can be a pretty good one of them at a great cost.

Makes no sense how he’d settle for less money in Toronto. He’d just stay in St Louis.
The no tax states exceed the benefits of playing with sponsorships. IF he even goes to market, Vegas has a giant lead ahead of Toronto among others like Florida, etc
Your rosy coloured glasses with bias aren’t shinning bright</div></div>
Vegas? Lmao, they're planning to spend $12M on goalies. How the hell are they gonna work that one out?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>OlegP</b></div><div>You don’t understand economics. What one team is working with is not what every team is working with
There are 10 teams off the top of my head that could sign Petro to 10 million per year. You need 1 team to sign him not the majority of teams</div></div>
Obviously someone like Ottawa or Detroit or Buffalo could technically sign him for $14 million per year. Is that in any way realistic? Of course not.
I'm assuming here that Petro wants to go to a good team here, and there's barely any that could afford to pay him so highly.
And again, the Leafs can offer the best structure possible, with signing bonuses up front, etc, to maximize his actual cash while keeping the AAV down. And again, the sponsorship opportunities for a superstar like him would be unparalleled in Toronto.
The AAV doesn't tell much about the actual cash that players can earn. It's a simple number, so I get why people would bring it up, but things are a lot more complex than that, and you need to look more into this to understand it better.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>EnvironmentalTwister</b></div><div>I'd do it. I'd only sign one of Fast/Simmonds to give them a bit more cap space, and have a cheaper forward extra.
Without Marner, keeping Johnsson/Kerfoot is important.
And you get 2 mid 1st rounders to have cheap ELC talent to replace the bottom 6 in the long run.</div></div>
My thought here is that, sure, in a bubble, you lose the Marner trade. But if that new found cap space lets you sign Pietrangelo, then you're essentially moving Marner for Pietrangelo + Severson + 2 mid-1sts, which obviously looks a hell of a lot nicer. I'm only making that move if it's certain that Petro's coming home.
I think that losing Marner at forward is a pretty big loss obviously, but the insane improvement on defence is more than worth it. And this team was pretty much #1 in goals for, so sacrificing some of that to assemble the best D corps in the league is so WORTH it. You still have a one-two punch of Matthews and Tavares to drive your top 2 lines. Then you've also got an incredible 30+ goal, 70+ point talent in William Nylander. Add in complementary pieces like Andreas Johnsson, Zach Hyman, Nick Robertson, and your top 6 is fantastic.
The depth of the forwards arguably improves here as well, as you're essentially swapping Kapanen and Gauthier for Jesper Fast and Wayne Simmonds. ~40 points from Kapanen,~15 from Gauthier for ~35 from Fast and ~30 from Simmonds, along with the experience they bring and the great physicality that Simmonds would offer you.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>draft_em_sign_em_trade_em</b></div><div>Pietro takes at least 9+ million...we saw what Josi' new contract is.</div></div>
He was only offered $8M by St. Louis. Teams are operating under different assumptions now, due to the flat cap situation. Players are going to have to accept that they won't be able to command as much money as usual because of the lack of cap space around the league.
An $8.5M AAV is fair for him, especially when you consider that the Leafs can offer the most attractive structure possible to him, thus maximizing the actual amount he'd get. Getting $500k less per year is worth it if you can get all of it in signing bonus and like half of the money in the first year + 1 day, since you can invest that an get a greater return in the long run.
That's also not to mention the sheer number of lucrative sponsorship opportunities that would instantly be unlocked for him. Not sure if you're aware but literally Frederik Gauthier is in a commercial with Sonnet Insurance, and if he can get one, then clearly a #1 Dman would be stacked with offers.

Mathews
1) One of the best 5v5 scorers in league history for ROR and Parayko? Both players are good and address needs, but you literally can't make that trade unless it absolutely blows you away.
2) Benning and Khaira for Kerfoot isn't awful value, but Oilers have to add here for sure. Kerfoot's a young budding 3C that can fill in the top 6 if needed. Benning and Khaira are both depth players.
3) Oooof, that Kapanen trade. Ya, I'd love seeing the Leafs trade a young dynamic top 6 winger that can play on the PP, PK and is one of the fastest players in the league for... Zach Kassian? and... Josh Archibald???
Kapanen's outscored both of these players by a SIGNIFICANT amount and hasn't had the privilege to play with Connor McDavid. The only way the Leafs move a talent like Kapanen is for a top 4 RHD.

Pietrangelo takes a discount to link up with his old pal John Tavares and bring a Cup home, while being closer to his family to take care of his 3 baby triplets. He takes a discount to make it work, just as John Tavares did. They laughed and laughed until Johnny Toronto came home. Pietrangelo will do the same, at a cap hit that works for the Leafs.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Couturier</b></div><div>Flyers don't accept. Laughton is better and he can also play center. I don't understand the purpose of the trade for the Flyers.</div></div>
LOL, Scott "32 point career high" Laughton is better than Johnsson who scored over 40 points in his rookie year (and was on a 48 point pace)? Johnsson would instantly become your 5th best winger by a large margin after Giroux, Voracek, Konecny and JvR, and adds a great option into the PP2 and can easily slot into the top 6 if injuries arise. The cost you give up is a 3rd liner, and in OP's deal the Flyers also get a 4th rounder, which I definitely don't agree with, it should be the Flyers adding a sweetener there. Johnsson's younger and has top 6 potential. Laughton is a career bottom 6er.

Flyers accept, Jets accept. Hamonic would likely ask for a bit more, but he would settle for less to join a top contender in the Hockey Mecca.

A new weird Trend
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>McGruff</b></div><div>I said it yesterday, Leafs have nothing BOS wants that can make for a clean deal approaching a key Win-Win situation...
* BOS strength is depth at D. BOS need (if Kase doesn't pan out) is a scoring #2RW = ie: Palmieri, Konecny, Atkinson, Rakell, Gallagher, Tuch, J. Anderson, Toffoli etc.
* TOR strength is top-line FWD depth. TOR need = ie: Carlo, Pesce, Parayko etc.
A discussion around Carlo for Nylander is as logical as the day is long...
To argue otherwise, is to argue as a FAN & NOT a GM. The <em>fan</em> pages are three doors over on the left, tell em' McGruff sent ya...
Personally, I overshoot TML all together call Philly and try for 1:1 Carlo-Konecny deal (.72ppg, cheaper, younger and more complete game).</div></div>
The problem is that although the needs of both teams may be being met here, the value's just awful. Nylander was on pace for 37 goals and 71 points this year. You don't trade that for Brandon Carlo, like, ever. If a young superstar like Nylander gets moved for a defenseman, they better be a damn good one. Like a guy who's a #2 or #3 defenseman good. This trade benefits a direct rival way too much for the Leafs to ever consider doing it. The only way they do a deal like this is for Kapanen+. You might not think that's good value and that's exactly why the deal just wouldn't happen. It doesn't make sense for either side here.
Also, if you think Nylander is overrated because he gets to play with one elite linemate usually, what would you say about David Pastrnak, who gets to play with two elite linemates every single game?

New Top 4 RHD and 3C
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aadoyle</b></div><div>K issues
1. Detroit is rebuilding so has no interest in losing picks. They may have an interest in dermott but thats a big maybe.
2. That does not get u Savard. Columbus would want a RHD coming back should they move him
3. Have no use for Chandler and we aint paying a 2nd for him pass.</div></div>
1. Doesn't have to be Detroit IMO, I used them almost as a placeholder. As long as you can get a 2nd for Dermott and a 2nd for Kerfoot, then everything else still works out. They're good, young players so I feel like there'd be a good market for them out there. I honestly want to keep Dermott but if we get a new Top 4 RHD, I don't see how we can afford to have him on our 3rd pair
2. I believe that's a pretty fair deal for Savard, since he's going on 30, they are stacked at D, but really lacking at forward. Adding a younger piece to the forward corps without subtracting from their top 3 defense is a nice get, seeing as they have guys (like Nuutivaara) who can step into that role
3. I'll agree that I may have overrated Stephenson. The trade is a 4th -> 2nd swap, not just giving away a 2nd, but he can probably be had for just a 4th considering Vegas will need to clear cap.
