I don't think that TOR-STL team makes sense for either team

1) One of the best 5v5 scorers in league history for ROR and Parayko? Both players are good and address needs, but you literally can't make that trade unless it absolutely blows you away.

2) Benning and Khaira for Kerfoot isn't awful value, but Oilers have to add here for sure. Kerfoot's a young budding 3C that can fill in the top 6 if needed. Benning and Khaira are both depth players.

3) Oooof, that Kapanen trade. Ya, I'd love seeing the Leafs trade a young dynamic top 6 winger that can play on the PP, PK and is one of the fastest players in the league for... Zach Kassian? and... Josh Archibald???

Kapanen's outscored both of these players by a SIGNIFICANT amount and hasn't had the privilege to play with Connor McDavid. The only way the Leafs move a talent like Kapanen is for a top 4 RHD.

Matthews trade doesn't blow you away but makes you harder to play against/better. for basically the same cap hit you get a #1 rhd and 2c (Conn winner) that is high end in both ends. in this situation 2 is better than 1.. not say Matthews is amazing but ROR isn't some scrub hes a top 15 center imo

edit

both blues player would need slightly more term. thought they were signedfor longer

It doesn't though, ROR is a terrific player but he's also turning 30. Matthews is becoming a top defensive player in his own right. 3rd in the league in takeaways last year and is the hardest guy in the league to keep off the scoreboard at 5v5. Those are facts. He's only going to get better as well since he's turning 23 this year. Parayko is terrific sure, but he's not in the same class as Matthews. The trade may look good to some eyes but if you are looking at this from the standpoint of what's best for a franchise, this is a terrible move for TO. Personally I don't think it makes them any better right now and in fact makes them worse.

the fact you cant understand how 2 players at the top of their respect position are better than 1player at the top of his resected position makes me not want to continue this argument. Matthews age is irrelevant and its more abut term bc hes a UFA in 4 years.... that means no matter how young he is hes gone if he wants to be or hell get some absurd salary like he currently has.

imo a roster with both Para and ROR is better than one with Matthews. this team is closer to winning a cup.

Ya I knew term would become a topic but resigning players isn’t exactly unheard of. Haha If a player has 2+ years left I consider that term and more than enough time to get an extension agreed upon. I actually think for not being a fan did rather decent from the outside looking in I’d be more worried to face this leafs team than the current just because of stronger d and a grittier offence. Giving up goal scoring but significantly improve goals against.

This one is bad for everyone involved IMO. Without Parayko, STL would be all-in on extending Pietrangelo, and there goes any bargaining power so say hello to 8x11m. And Matthews + roster replacement costs almost as much cap as ROR + Parayko so it's not like we are gaining enough cap room to make the signing any easier.

The Blues' m.o. has been to build a balanced team both on the ice and on the salary table. No point in handing over the 2 best contracts for an $11m player when STL is already a top team. TBH it's probably why the chances of Pietrangelo extending are looking more and more grim - they don't want to lose that balance and they'd rather have Faulk making 6.5 than Pietro at 10m. Whether it's the right or wrong move is debatable but that's what it seems like they want to do.

Age is never irrelevant. Age is one of the biggest factors in determining value. A 30 year old player is physically already declining. Its human biology. A 23 year old is still entering his physical prime. What that means is a 30 year old will rely on experience and intelligence more while a 23 year old is going to see all his skills refine and get better. Since Matthews is proving to be a terrific defensive centre, (There are only facts to support this) and he's the single best 5v5 goal scorer in the game today. He's by far superior to ROR, and the difference will only get greater in the coming years. Parayko is terrific, sure, no question and he'd be an incredible partner for Rielly. Matthews is just too good to move for something like this.

You also were a guy who said Kuznetsov was better than Matthews last summer. You're definitely bias against him.

Haha I agree as an oilers fan but I think each of those players going to Toronto could actually be an excellent fit and reasonably fair deals. I just know most of those players will only be seen with value from those who watched oilers and know the players well.

how many terrific defensive center don't ever play PK? maybe your stats are misleading bc if hes an elite level center he would obviously be playing PK. I know ROR does

Personally I want him to start killing penalties. At least to start them off, he's incredible in the dot and his speed and size would be an asset. But that is a coaches decision.
