(PIT/CAR) - Guentzel, Smith for Bunting, Koivunen, Ponomarev, Lucius, 2024 2nd (PHI), 2024 5th (CAR)
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>True. It also sounds like Dennis Maruk. And also thousands of guys we never heard of or don't remember. For every Guentzel, there's countless Braccos.</div></div>
I figured I'd put this here for context - <a href="https://www.pensburgh.com/2013/9/10/4713922/prospect-profile-15-jake-guentzel" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Summary of Guentzal after his draft year</a>
You're absolutely right though - there are more under sized prospects that don't pan out in comparison to those that become Jake Guentzal.
I just think it's important to take a breathe and acknowledge that every player develops differently and we won't really know what we have here for awhile.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>mokumboi</b></div><div>But did he though? Two guys who don't skate or compete that well by NHL standards, one of whom is 160 pounds and the other is 6 ft but rather skinny. There are literally a dozen better prospects in the Carolina pool. Put it together with a "chance at a 1st" and this is a complete Dubas failure. And if they do not get the 1st, it;s a shocking failure. For me, it would be instantly fire-able, especially after some of his other bad moves.</div></div>
A 19 y/o at a PPG in the NCAA is alright, maybe a peak of being a middle-6 winger?
20 y/o at a PPG in Liiga is good IMO, with his stature of 5'11 I assume he may fill out but who knows. Again I'd say peaks mid-6.
Jake wasn't re-signing in Pitt and some other teams in on him (EDM, COL, VGK) all seem to have backed out, plus the injury I'd say dropped the price a bit.
I don't think anyone was trading their top prospects for him (outside of EDM who may have moved Holloway).
All of it combined I wasn't really sure why people on this site were expecting him to get an A+ Prospect and a 1st and +++ as he seems to want to test FA.
Maybe if there was a chance at an extension in place it becomes more lopsided (and who knows, maybe later today Carolina will come out with an extension for him and really rub in the victory here) but all I'm saying right now is that this wasn't a landslide.
Dubas did fine, Waddell did better. B- and A+ I'd say?

Wow. This is an absolute fleece job by Carolina. I like Koivunen a lot, Lucius is solid, and Ponomarev is alright, but this is Jake freakin' Guentzel we are talking about. Pittsburgh doesnt even get a 1st unless Carolina makes the SCF. Feels like Dubas could've done so much better, guys like Morrow or Blake or Nadeau would've been far more fair.
For Carolina, this is the superstar they have long wanted. Guentzel is one of the best wingers in this league, and they didnt even have to give up any of their best prospects to get him. Excellent addition and he will thrive in Carolina.
For Pittsburgh, I already mentioned I really like Koivunen and I think Bunting next to Crosby will be very fun, but man this is underwhelming. I doubt Ponomarev or Lucius become much more than bottom 6ers, and they arent really guys you want to kick off your rebuild. This is going to be a tough pill to shallow for Pens fans who rightfully expected much more for a guy who gave his all to the organization for years.
The real winners here are NHL fans who are thrilled Vegas didnt land Guentzel. Heres to hoping they strike out on Buchnevich as well!

(COL/BUF) - Byram for Mittelstadt
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tonir87</b></div><div>Yes and maybe after Colorado saw Malinski playing in NHL lvl, it made more easy to trade Byram? Ofc I seen Malinski just 23 game, but i like it him a lot. I been thinking for while, who could be that second C for Colorado and after i saw they traded Mittlestadt i think it can be perfect fit, if they can keep his salary to 5-6milj range.
I also agree on those worries that BUF just added one more LD, maybe they re-trade Byram or maybe he get use to play RD better in new system, but i agree its bit weird.
I voted fair deal.</div></div>
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>PaddysPub</b></div><div>Yeah I think seeing how well Malinski played with us helped this deal. Also a few other factors. Girard has looked really good since coming back from the players assistance program. And him and byram just never fit together for whatever reason. And to a lesser extent, Gulyayev playing all season in the top 4 in the KHL as an 18 year old is really impressive. And so I think he was also considered in this.</div></div>
Yeah Malinski, Behrens and Gulyayev in the pipeline helps to look ahead, but even JJ and Caleb this year playing well really help make it easier to move on from Bo. Malinski is great for the team to have as depth since if Makar or Manson goes down we know he can jump into that role. We'll see if they extend Sean Walker or not if that sets him up for a roster spot next year on the NHL club.

I feel like EDM should have went after Hanifin, Seeler or Walker instead of Henrique. However this is better than nothing and McDavid/Draisaitl/Henrique/McLeod might be the best center depth in NHL.
Good for ANA getting a 1st for Henrique
Good for TBL getting an asset for a potential trade as lack of assets are a bigger problem than cap space for them.
Overall, fair deal.

Tampa is last team I would think enclined to retain salary for a low pick. What am I missing here!?
Edit.: Ok, a lot of LTIR money, but since when TB doesn't use every cent of their capspace to contend?

(COL/BUF) - Byram for Mittelstadt
When the Avs committed long term to Devon Toews, the writing was on the wall for Byram to get moved. They put him on his off-hand side to try and increase his value and it worked.
I posted this trade as my perfect offer for the Avs to get a quality young #2 Center.
I don't see what it really does for Buffalo who are so overweight on the LHD and similiar types of players

Why would you trade Tarasenko for so little return on Wednesday, when you can wait 2 days and maybe see the market shift in your favor? Its not like Ottawa was going to get less for him on Friday...just an epically stupid trade by Ottawa. And frankly, Vegas is also a loser here, given they gave up more for Mantha...

This is highway robbery for the Panthers who add another lethal offensive weapon to their already loaded forward group. At only 2.5m, he is going to be extremely valuable. (PIT/CBJ) - Nylander, 2026 6th (PIT) for Bemström
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Tonir87</b></div><div>Maybe they didnt had cap space then? I think he was waiwers in November? So his Cap hit would been higher for Pens (Mean almost 100% of 900 000dollar). Or do PIT still need to pay full cap hit (this year) or is cap hit divided on days? I am not fully sure about rule. Second what i think is, that now they roster size stay in 48/50. So if they would taken Bemström from waiwers, they would been able to add only 1 contract more in rest of the season. Now giving Nylander they still stay in 48/50. Contract management can be important in trade deadline if you are buyer. For draft pick, i think they had to pay it, because Bemström potential is bit higher and he can see NHL time in PIT and Nylander wasnt able to see NHL time in PIT.

Still a weird condition. He still traded a 6th round pick for a guy who you now want to limit if he's actually good, and if he's good you want to scratch him so you don't give up a high draft pick.

If Toronto want add goalie, most of solid starters take 5M. So about 28M to use for rest of the team. Interesting to see how they solve it and who will be traded. Willy earned the moneys, but Toronto lost widness for doing this signing.
Willy won
Toronto Lose (if they cant trade Tavares or Marner and get good return from it)</div></div>

This is going to be a trade you have to revisit in 5 years to see how it shook out. Gauthier's a solid prospect and Drysdale had a rough couple years but could still be a good top 2 defenseman.
Flyers "win" right now because they got tangible returns on someone who wasn't going to play for them.
