I can see that. Thinking is that San Jose needs to reach the cap floor, and is fairly bereft of NHL centers. At least one SJ fan ACGM took him with a 4th and sent a player back.

Plus my understanding is Necas is at least comfortable at c and maybe Jarvis too. So why are they of all teams acquiring him?</div></div>
Necas and Jarvis have never played center for them at the NHL level. It's possible Jarvis still might, at this point the ship has probably sailed on Necas at center for Rod.
The glass-half-empty view is that Drury/Staal/KK constitute 3 bottom-six centers rather than 3 top 9, as Drury/KK haven't proven offensive upside yet. The most successful offensive version using one of them was probably Svech/KK/Necas last year, but that line cratered when Svech got hurt - it wasn't being driven by the center.

Soctt Wheeler at the Athletic has them at #6 (Pono), #7 (Koivunen), and #9 (Lucius).
To be fair, Pono is a point-per-game player at the NHL level at the moment.

Canes have $5m+ in deadline space. I assume adding Bunting to that makes it more likely to be Guentzel + Smith, but could be Guentzel + someone from a third team.

Just one person's opinion, but at least one second+ pair and one third+ pair defender, replacements for Teravainen, Noesen, Necas if traded, and a real 2C.
I assume Andersson is off-limits?

KK buyout wont hurt much
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>NARC311</b></div><div>Damn that is the most buyoutable 7 year deal I've ever seen</div></div>
Per the Buyout FAQ:
The buyout amount is a function of the players age at the time of the buyout, and are as follows:
1/3 of the remaining contract value, if the player is younger than 26 at the time of the buyout
The Canes can buyout KK for a cap hit that is roughly an ELC at any point up until July 6, 2026.

I haven't seen any noise that's been made public, just that Orlov/TDA at the beginning of the year was a disaster.
TDA as a playoff fill in for Burns would be manageable. TDA as a playoff fill-in for Slavin/Pesce/Skjei/etc would be not good.

It's at least Raanta's third injury in the past two seasons, and the statement today was *at least* a couple of weeks. They've got one month to come to an answer on "do we have at least two goalies we trust to play multiple playoff games without breaking down", it wouldn't be surprising if they decide the answer is no.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div>Kochetkov might be a good pick up.</div></div>
Kochetkov wouldn't be traded unless they are deciding to fully commit to an entirely different long term #1, and probably not even then.

I thought I read somewhere that Orlov + TDA was because they had the framework of a Pesce trade, but the trade fell through.
In any case, I could see them sending TDA off for a 6th & a bag of pucks if they need to bring on more salary at the deadline.

Bunting has been good on the PP, but (other trade value aside) I would swap Bunting for TK in the lineup every day of the week.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>As for signings, replace Amadio with Martinook. Drury, Noesen, and Chatfield likely get a bit less money than what you have given them, but it certainly isn’t the worst thing on here.</div></div>
Drury has arbitration rights, I have no idea what AAV that will end up with.
As for Marty, at some point it would be nice to get someone who is both younger and can shoot a little better on Staal's line.

As it stands above, there's only $300k of space with a 21-man roster and $1.2m of PK's salary buried. I think one of Skjei, Pesce, or Turbo may be gone regardless. EDIT: Or Tarasenko signed for a lot less...

If you extend Skjei for any reasonable length, then Nikishin (whom the front office considers untouchable) ends up at 3LD until he reaches FA. It's possible, but it would be an odd use of assets, IMO.

OK we can trade Pesce

My guess is either a similar scorer with longer cost certainty (Keller) or someone who is arguably better (insert Toronto forward here).
On the assumption that Fiala or Kempe++ is off limits, I'm not sure LA has a package that would convince them.

Carolina's '23 2nd instead of the Philly '24 is fine. I put the Philly pick in because it's going to be way higher, but if LA wants the earlier pick, sure.

Pesce hired a new agent coinciding with the Severson sign & trade, and assorted insiders said they've heard Pesce will be traded by the Canes <strong>IF</strong> they can't come to terms on an extension (presumably before the season), with Edmonton and Buffalo sniffing around.

Assumption is that the Canes need a GK that:
- has shown they can be a 1B-to-1A
- can do it reasonably competently
- isn't made of glass
Looking at non-Korpi UFAs, looks like hoping to give it a go with Jarry or Adin Hill, or trusting that Varlomov won't hit an age cliff.

Certainly would be cheaper, but I was trying to figure out the best player that the Canes could reasonably get with Necas that could take over 1/2LW after this year. I'm skeptical that Necas will turn into a Lindholm-like player, but we'll see.
