LEAFS OPENING NIGHT ROSTER
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>MitchJr</b></div><div>I think Domi - if he is signed - plays with Matthews. I agree 100% on Cowan (what a steal he was at draft) but hard to see him playing on 2nd line; swap out him & McMann maybe who showed good chemistry with JT last year.
I wouldn’t give Liljegren that much but 🤷🏻</div></div>
If you give Liljegren what I gave him here, it could turn out to be a solid contract by year 3 and 4. I've even wondered about extending him longer at the same price just don't know if he would accept a 6 year deal at 3.5.
If the Leafs spend more money than I have on other players, Liljegren likely gets a bridge deal through arbitration at maybe 2.5-2.75. I've made other lineups where I have given Liljegren this as well.

For up front having two 2+ million dollar forwards on the 4th line probably also isn’t ideal, especially with how poor the PK was. I would say moving off Jarnkrok would probably be smart. His last couple of seasons have proved that he isn’t a playoff performer.</div></div>
I agree about the fourth line but my thinking is that we would need to find someone better at PK than Jarnkrok, he is one of our only veteran bottom six forwards who kills penalties. He also can take faceoffs in those situations.
I also agree about Benoit but I think they can address this at the deadline and run with this for now, I'm not ecstatic about spending huge coin on a second-pair defensemen this year looking at the current market and the Leafs cap outlook this year.

He isn't better than anything they already have and tops out as a a bottom pair guy and theJets already have plenty of those. They are also easy to find as UFA, so why pay for it?</div></div>
The point is he has team control and you could extend him in Winnipeg cheaper than signing a UFA on the open market. Once a player becomes unrestricted they have multiple suitors bidding for their services. They are much more likely to overpay in salary under the circumstances of signing an unrestricted free agent this summer instead of giving up a 5th rounder for a guy who becomes restricted. The 5th rounder more than likely will never play a game in the NHL.

Hey, I'm also open to that. The only reason I have him moving here is for cap flexibility as it is tough to sign a goalie under our current construction to a one-year deal. He has a tough time staying healthy but I like his game.

Are you suggesting you would trade Marner under any circumstance, even if we aren't happy with the return? I'm open to moving one of the big four if we get a quality package back, but in all honesty I think seeing what the team does with a demanding coach is an important final experiment here if we can't find a trade. These guys were coached by Keefe for all their prime years, I like Keefe but it was time to switch it up and I wonder how they will respond to a guy like Berube who holds everyone accountable both publicly and privately.

Exactly. Conor Timmins is a solid bottom-pair defensemen with offensive upside, just has always struggled with injuries. I have him being moved him for salary reasons as well as the opportunity to sign a veteran depth defensemen at a cheaper rate.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>draft_em_sign_em_trade_em</b></div><div>I think Tanev gets $5 million on a 2 yr deal, $4.5 sounds good if you want to commit to 4 yrs.
I don't think you can give Liljgren a 2 yr deal, I believe that'll end in UFA as he'd be 27 yrs old at the end of that contract.
I give both Robertson and Dewar a contract under $1.15 million on short term because that is the max amount a player can get buried in the Ahl with without a cap penalty' like Reaves and McMann would be 200K to bury.
I guess we should look at ex Flames or ex Blues players to reunite with Trev and Berube. I was hoping Ex Flame/Leaf Riititch would hit UFA but he's staying a King.
Robertson is on the bubble, hard to imagine he fit into a Berube style of game.
I too hope a rookie makes the team, the competitiveness of rookies usually keeps the vets on their toes.</div></div>
Tanev contract could be anything in that range, I just based this off of his current AAV and him being from Toronto.
The point of giving Liljegren the 2 yrs is to keep his salary down, if we give him 1 year he will ask for another contract next summer with more money, I want to keep the money down. If he plays well by the end of the second year they can try to extend him, if not, they can move off him and let him walk to UFA. I'm not sure where they are at with him, I would like to keep him long-term myself but it's a new coach and GM so I'm not sold on them worrying as much about two years down the road. They may want to revamp the bottom pair even further at that time.
Robertson and Dewar's contracts will be inconsequential. Dewar has arbitration rights so he almost certainly will get more than $1.15, Robertson you really could just hold out and get even less for him as he does not have arb rights. I like the contract I gave Robertson because you get him cheap for the second year and you also delay his arbitration on a future contract.
I could see Berube using Robertson as I think moving him this summer would constitute not receiving as much as possible for him. I wanna see another year of him healthy and maybe he moves at the deadline if he doesn't fit into Berube's philosophy or whatever.
Let me know where you are with this! Are you onboard with keeping the big four around?

Run it Back with Rod BrindAmour as Coach
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>WJC_Enthusiast</b></div><div>So run back a core that can't get it done with a coach that also can't get it done?</div></div>
Not sure that Brind'Amour can't get it done, I think he has done a great job when you consider the culture he has built in the Hurricanes organization. Before him, they had missed playoffs for nine consecutive years, he really helped put Carolina back in the mix.
As far as the core four, I'm not 100% opposed to moving Marner, but I also don't want to take a random guess at what a trade that makes the Leafs better would look like. I am not sure that there is one, and I am fairly confident that he won't waive his NMC. I think that once Tavares contract is up next year that will open up even more cap space and allow the Leafs to then alter the roster even more. I envision Marner staying and getting an extension after a great contract year, similar to what Nylander did this year.
I guess what I am trying to say is the narrative always changes and this time last year people were saying if Nylander wants more than $9,000,000 then let him walk. Obviously in hindsight that would have been an awful decision. Let me know what you think of my reasoning, I would like to hear what you think!

The most Toronto Maple Leafs thing that could happen would be that Marner has a career year like Nylander did this year. No one is talking about it because the whole fan base is rattled from the loss. I am leaning towards Marner extension next year whether that's mid-year or after next playoffs.

They were not good vs Florida last year I agree. I just like the idea of trying it out again so that each pairing has a physical presence. I wonder if having Brodie on his strong side this year will make the pairing better, last year Brodie was playing on the right side with McCabe.
McCabe, Lyubushkin, and Edmundson all in separate pairs I think will help the Leafs clear the front of the net more consistently.

Having Brodie and Tanev signed too about 2m combined cheaper might be answer.</div></div>
Hello palhal,
Thank you for the feedback! I left the $980,333 cap space for a 7th D, and I would have the Leafs run 11 and 7 when Reaves doesn't play. Also, as injuries occur, cap space would become open for Leafs to bring up more guys from the Marlies.
I don't think Brodie or Tanev go any lower than $4,000,000. I do agree with you about Vladar, but I couldn't decide who I would run instead. What I like about Vladar is that he only has the one year on his deal remaining, who would you choose instead at a cheaper contract?
My thinking is like similar to what we did with Martin Jones, we get a third string goaltender with NHL history and give him that waiver day bonus that Treliving gave Jones, send him to the minors to play in tandem with Hildeby, and if Vladar falters we would have this other goalie as well. But again, I couldn't think of any names but would appreciate you helping me out with what you would have in mind.

Maple Leafs Cap Compliant Trade Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ryminister_92</b></div><div>Trading a 1st for an injury riddled 34 year old pending UFA isn’t a smart idea. Yes the Leafs have heavy interest in Tanev, but I don’t think it’s for the 24’ 1st round pick level - they might rather take their chances and see if he hits free agency and sign him for nothing instead. Management realizes the team isn’t at a level of where it needs to be right now and part of that is the depth within the organization, Treliving is stressing to build up the prospects for that pick is more valuable to him than people think.
I think the only way the 24’ 1st round pick gets moved is for a defenceman with term - my guess is Ristolainen who Toronto has also had heavy interest in and has 4 years on his deal at a good cap hit.</div></div>
Thank you for the feedback! I think the fact that Tanev is from Toronto and familiar with Treliving makes this a great fit. I'm more bullish on him than you seem to be, and that's fine. In terms of Ristolainen, I don't know how Toronto could make the salary cap work, a big part of acquiring a player on an expiring deal is it is much more realistic to get salary retention, and then the Leafs could extend Tanev beyond this season on a 2 year bridge deal.
I do agree however that it would be enticing to keep the first and sign Tanev in July, I just think the Leafs need to keep going for it. Do you have any concerns heading into the playoffs with the roster?

Fleury was quoted during training camp that he wants to make a decision on his future at the end of the season. Toronto would give him the most play time as he would share the net with Joseph Woll, while also being on a competitive team. Minnesota will still be paying a combined $14,700,000 towards the Parise and Suter buyouts with Jesper Wallstedt ready to take his spot on entry-level money, Toronto will beat their offer given the cap crunch should he decide to continue playing.
If it's not Fleury, I believe Toronto will sign another goaltender at backup money similar to what I have given Fleury.

There is no way we are trading Nylander at this point though we are trying to win the Cup, it would be a bad look if we flip him for picks right now and don't replace him ASAP with another prolific player. Klingberg's value is low too right now, I doubt most teams would give anything in a trade.

I don't disagree, I just look at the amount of picks the Leafs have in the next few years. If we give up next year's third as well, we only have 4 picks and all of them are from 5th round and later. I based this trade value off of the recent trade that Craig Conroy made when he took over in the summer. He gave New Jersey Tyler Toffoli for Yegor Sharangovich and a 3rd. Toffoli had a full year left on his contract and had also just led the Flames in scoring. I think the 3rd is fine and if I were to give up more I would throw a lower round pick in addition as we have plenty of picks from the 5th round and onwards.
