I don't see any issues at all. Hainsey and gardiner walk and we have plenty of defensmen in our system who will be ready to move up.

Big trade bye bye karlsson and duchene and stone
I think Ottawa is gonna be disappointed in the returns for these guys
Skinner got Carolina a “b level” prospect, 2nd, 3rd & 6th
Idk that they get much more than that for Stone or Duchene?
Karlsson is even gonna get an underwhelming return it looks like
At least they’ve got a chance to get Hughes
oh, wait...
That franchise is screwed

Pairings in 2019?
Rielly-Ozhiganov (he is abilities to be perfect partner for Rielly, its not about being on 1st, 2nd or 3rd pair)
Dermott-Zaitsev (smooth two-way pairing)
Borgman-Liljegren (Hard hitting defensive defender with offensive defender who would be pretty great.)
That is a good defence, not stellar of course, but it would get the job done imo.</div></div>
I have heard Babs say nothing but great things but I guess the case can be made look at how Hainsey looked for 40 games with Reilly if Ozzi is better than that and he seems so excited to join the team, thank you Babs, thank you Dubas, thank you KHL for our right side.

The bad contracts will keep them in the middle and by the time thats resolved we will be that much closer to 2026.</div></div>
And objectively speaking. No joking around, how many cup finals could the Leafs have gone to.
The rest of the east is getting old.
Buffalo is getting good.
Like in that 8 year could the Leafs have been in3 cup finals. Maybe more.
Toronto will look extremely desirable compared to the mess he is in.

No you didn't say he was bad but you said unless he takes a massive step forward he's not worth 4.5 mill. Which in a couple years will be peanuts. Zaitsev is a great player and he's worth a lot more then 4.5.

Remember June 2017, some Leafs fans were going crazy thinking they might lose either Leipisic or Leivo. And they did, but the teams didn't collapse. Next expansion draft the Leafs (and most good teams) are going to lose a NHL player, maybe even a good one.....so what? If one Brown or Kapanen goes is really going to devastating?
Let's say the expansion draft is put off to 2021. Kadri and Reilly only have one year left on their contracts. Maybe you leave them exposed...you only lose one, and keep two younger players instead. Imagine the riots on Yonge Street if that happens.

So not only are you not giving ZaitseV a shot you're trading away a great prospect and a 2nd to get rid of an excellent player?? That's not smart...
Zaitsev had a concussion and when he got back (too early imo btw) Babs rode him into the ground cause he wanted to change Zaitsev into a more defensively responsible D. Look for Zaitsev to have a breakout year with being healthy and put in a better position to flourish.

TML fans what are your thoughts?
I think toronto fans worry too much about how their defense looks.
The pens won with Ron Hainsy as their top pairing guy. Hockey is an offensive sport. You have the fire power to out score every night, if you have a decent goalie you got a real chance.
It tells you more about what the fans really think of their goalie than anything else.
The talent is on the lines to hold the puck the majority of the game. If you don't trust your goalie for the remainder of it then you worry about your defense.
I would expect Toronto to hold puck possession for 60+% of their games. If they can't outscore people with this much talent on offense then frankly they don't deserve to win.

I think Montreal's best approach is to start the rebuild now by trading Pacioretty, and the best places for him (for all concerned) are Anaheim, Las Vegas and Los Angeles, all of which would be happy to give Montreal high draft picks -- particularly Las Vegas, which can afford to overspend in that area (see Tatar, Tomas).

If Nylander signs a long term contract, it will be on the basis of Nylander will get better....always an iffy projection. Of course if Nylander thinks his is going to be getting better and therefore be more "valuable", shouldn't Nylander shun a long term deal and take a shorter term, less money bridge? IMO Nylander wants a bridge, while the Leafs would prefer a long term deal. To me it's a bridge that is signed.
Borgman. Agree with. you. IMO Borgman is going to be a very competent NHL Dman. He has play minutes this year. I'd prefer he played with the Leafs as more AHL isn't going to develop him that much more at his age and with this years of pro experience. Even if it means moving Dermot to ride side and having the LHD. Reilly, Gardiner and Borgman.</div></div>
I was too obscure in my reference to Perry. My thought was/is that Perry got signed to his big-ticket long-term contract late and I don't want to see the same thing happen with Nylander. Six years to 28 and then 6 years to 34 seems about right. Or 8 years and then let's see.

I put Gardiner in there to use that cap space for either him or someone else. But the D definitively needs another top 4 body. Sometimes I am on the fence about Gardiner, I like him a lot and see his value, but we all know the random gaffs. One thing I will say is if you watch all the goals on youtube from Marner/Nylander/Matthews you can really see how much offense Gardiner creates because it seems like he touches the puck on half the plays of more

The you don't understand the Leafs. This numbering system that so many use is so meaningless. Don't know how Kadri is a third line centre when scores 31 goals, is the centre for 27 goal scorer Marleau, plays LW on the PP with Mattews and Nylander. Even if is a third line centre if it fits your description, 4.6m is a reasonable price. He probably gets almost as many minutes as Matthews and Tavares anyway. Why would the Leafs want to downgrade to another centre who plays 18 minutes a game?

Glad you mentioned Crosby. At the time Crosby was close to the top salary. But Crosby was smart enough to know being a captain on a perennial potential long term was worth more in "outside money" that scrambling for a few dollars more in the NHL. Hence Crosby's net worth is apparently 150m. So maybe players might give money discounts be Leafs....especially if they see Leafs as future Cup winners, Sorry over 7m is an overpayment for Ellis, and if wants top dollars just to join team, do you really want him. Apparently Tavares was offered 13m to sign with San Jose. It's more important to have players who want to play for your team instead just getting. players because you paid them the most.
