To guarantee landing Kap, you'd need to go 5M+ and that's where I wouldn't pay that price.....

As for Byram though I disagree. If Colorado entertains this deal, I think I'd do it. Drouin ultimately is a winger. The least valued position of all of them and the easiest position to patch up with free agency. Habs had Tatar thrown into a deal and he outproduced Drouin and is only 4 years older. Players who can produce what Drouin has shown he's capable of are available if your smart. Players of Byram's ilk? Virtually never.

They are only available through the draft. Habs have a specific need for LHD and Byram fits that need to a tee. There's added value for Colorado to do it as Drouin and Mack have killer chemistry and what not but considering the plethora of wingers we have and the odds of at least one of Domi/Poehling/Kotkaniemi/Suzuki etc needing to play the wing instead of center if they are to play top 6 minutes, this trade makes a ton of sense. We've seen enough of Drouin to know he is not a leader and guy that will consistently bring the team on his back. He's a great complimentary player to other good players. Byram could be the best dman Montreal has had since vintage Markov, more recently prime Subban/Weber and maybe even pre-GM Rejean Houle Habs dmen like Chelios for example.

He's the consensus best dman in the draft and we could replace Drouin wing with the 15thOA in a guy like Ryan Suzuki, Caulfield, Lavoie, etc whoever is available.</div></div>

That’s the most I’d give in the kapanen deal I’d just throw it out there worst case senario it forces Toronto to make a move win win for habs eitherway and I still think we could use more finish on our wings, we have lots of wingers but not much consistent players who can finish I’d be looking for kapanen to continue his progression into that if that offer went through

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>F50marco</b></div><div>Good points and analysis. I just want to add a couple things though:

Dano was 20 years old at the time of the trade. In hindsight, he didn't turn into anything really but at that time was a coveted prospect. Many would argue he was one of the key pieces to the CLB deal for Saad. I think seeing how he's progressed has altered your impression of the trade. Hindsight is 20/20. The equivalent to that trade today but with STL would be Thompson and a 1st for Ladd with the retention.

Ladd was the same age Pacioretty is now. Similar contract. Both captains. Pacioretty has better numbers through out his career but Ladd had won a cup with Chicago so lets call it even. Both guys production thus far this year is similar. Pacioretty has a 0.55 PPG while Ladd has 0.58 PPG at the time of the trade.

What is one of the biggest differences? Pacioretty has another year on his already cheap contract! You mentioned a couple comparisons like Ladd and Shattenkirk and Kane but they were/are all pending UFA's. Look at deals where the player had an extra year on their contracts. Duchene, Lucic, Yandle, St Louis, etc.
Now Imagine with retention too? Lets say all 50% of it. That is 2.25M for this year and next for a guy whose had more goals the past 7 years than any player in the league that wasn't a former 1st round pick. (Ovi, Stamkos, JT and Kane)

Yes 4 5v5 goals in 42 games. Sucks. Its been really sucky this year. if you watched all the Habs games this year you'd know he has been incredibly snake bitten. I can vividly remember at least 5 times this season where a goalie absolutely robbed Pacioretty with the luckiest of Hasek like flopping saves. Frankly just with those 5 shots alone would all this major negativity against be changed.......

I think at the end of the day what annoys me the most is not that people on here don't want to pay the price us Habs fans are expecting for Pacioretty. We can't force anyone to do it. Its actually just how badly 1 year and not even a full year mind you its only 42 games, has seemed to have completely altered his value in some peoples mind. 42 games ago, Pacioretty was an elite goal scorer that any team would love to have and would instantly make them a better club. Now? He is dismissed because he isn't scoring like the 6 previous years before this one....

Its like people on here are only interested in the flavor of the month. A player could be a bum for 3 years of his contract and then on the last year put up good numbers and people would say he has better value then the guy whose did the opposite. (3 good years and 1 bad year). I guess I just feel bad for Pacioretty. One day he's one of the best there is and boom all that hard work and talent out the door in a matter of 42 games because its a "what have you done for me lately" mentality around these parts.

Its really unfortunate because Pacioretty is a stud. Even studs have bad seasons some times. Remember Marchand in 14-15? Marleau in 07-08? Nash in 13-14? Each one of those guys rebounded with big years the following year.

But the thing that absolutely pisses me off though, is if the Habs trade Pacioretty for decent but not full value like you say and he goes to STL and scores 40 goals next year. Everyone and their mother is going to be like " Lol stupid MB traded a stud player for less than he should AGAIN". If he doesn't produce as much as he was supposed to or thought he would, "SEE i told you he was a garbage player, we should of never traded for him. Hes a bum".

It seems its almost a lose/lose situation for MTL.....

All I know is it seems people on here covet their prospects a little too much. Which by the way everyone does. Even me. Ask any fan base about their top prospects aside from the ones who have like top 5 picks players or something and they're going to praise that player above and beyond reason. Im starting think unproven prospects have more value then the actual NHL players. Simply because they're still "Unknown".

All I know is as bad as Pacioretty has been this year, he hasn't actually played bad. He's been unlucky (6% SH average) and he's playing on one of the worst offensively talented teams in the league this year......whats more likely? That the team is garbage and Pacioretty is just snake bitten or that Pacioretty is just overrated/ never was really that good and he was just lucky to get all those goals playing next to David Desharnais for 5 years straight?

That answer is pretty obvious. Like i said, if Habs don't get full value for Pacioretty, whatever. We can't force teams to give us good prospects and picks. But the lack of respect Pacioretty is getting this year is beyond insane. He literally has more goals in his career (thus far only) than every single STL Blues player in their entire history save for 4 players....... Hull, Federko, Sutter and Unger.

Its just a shame everyone looks at 4 5v5 goals in 42 games and not all the other stuff he's done.</div></div>

#nailedit. If you can't cash in and get fair value for patches you simply keep him till the draft or for his bounce back year next year Montreal doesn't have to trade him they only will if they can cash in .
