That 2020 2nd is all but a 1st and more than likely the 2021 3rd is all but a 2nd. I see your point but there aren't many teams that can either fit the expected salary for Murray or the need.

Dallas is looking for a scoring forward not a defenseman.
Retainage aside why would we do the Edmonton trade. Why would Edmonton want it? Gagner is overpaid for a 4th liner. Russel to be honest I think is worse than JJ is now. He really is only known for blocking shots and if you are 5ft 10 and only 170 lbs with no elite skating or offensive ability what good are you really. I don't even see Russel as an upgrade of Riikola or Ruhwedel.
Rodrigue seems a decent goalie prospect but the Pens have plenty of goalie depth so not a need.
Glendening would be a decent pickup.</div></div>
PIT has plenty of goalie depth? Sorry, but, with who? D'ORIO is the youngest at 20 and unless he's playing 3 card Monty with the league, he's not the answer. The rest are 25+ years old.

If DAL needs a scoring forward to save their season, wow. They have approx. 32 mil invested in 4 forwards, that's problem 1. 2nd, they have 3 top 5 D that are paid like they should be and the rest are 6-7 D. Schultz rounds out their top 4 and give them a much more mobile D.

Also, why would both sides of the Edmonton trade retain salary....? Lol</div></div>
Since PIT has the extra cap room with G being out, use it as a tool to gain more assets. None of the retained money goes beyond this year. Rodrigue isn't on paper anything special but he has one thing the team needs. He is a goalie. A simple look at the team will tell you that PIT NEEDS goalie depth. Gagner is a cap dump and Russell isn't a bad 3rd pair D at 2 mill. EDM retains on Russell for next year when PIT needs relief and PIT retains this year when EDM is crying to make the playoffs.

Simple pitts trade Would you do it
Seen and done these trades before. I really think Vesey would fit better in PIT's system and Gal better in BUF's system. That being said, something else would have to come back considering the amount of retention. I have added Fitzgerald and Portillo given that BUF doesn't have a 3rd for a couple of years. If BUF is really high on either of them, PIT could send back a 4th or a C-prospect to make up the difference or maybe swap Portillo for Pavlchev (couple of reserve guys).

I'd be happy with giving up the 2020 1st if it were something like Brown, Hainsey and Lajoie for PIT 1st, POJ and a random 3-4 pick.

Knows the system, well liked by the team, can play either side and is still playing 20+ mins per game at 38. For a 24 year old reserve guy and a 4th, do that trade every day of the week and twice on Tuesday.

San Jose is SOOO screwed
Shy of buy-outs, they are stuck with Kane, Vlasic, Karlsson and Jones. The only guys that shouldn't be moved are Couture, Meier and Labanc. That leaves Burns and Hertl to rebuild a team which is hard because they both have clauses. Ouch

If PIT is giving up Legare and Addison with a pick, I'd rather Weber. Would need to add a bit but seeing a top 5 D where Marino/Pettersson are the weak link sounds pretty damn good to me.

TOR doesn't. They have enough "marquee" players, they lack the depth guys. Giving up two middle 6 guys for 1 doesn't make much sense. If you want to trade those two guys, get a D on some term. Next year is gonna get ugly quick for TOR and there really isn't a quick fix for it.

hockey trades
Like the Thornton trade. PIT could even retain a mill if it makes it a bit more palatable. Really don't like the Lafferty trade though. Guy has all the traits that the team is looking for and add the fact he is one of the few RH forwards that the team has make him even harder to move IMO. I really don't think we've seen his best yet which sould be a full time 3rd line with the ability to go 2nd in limited situations (better than ZAR but not quite Rust). If they decide to go for a middle 6 guy, I'd like to see Comeau come back. He had good chemistry with both Geno and Sid. Guy still has good speed, hands and plays a 200ft game. The RH shot on the LW doesn't hurt either for the next year giving time for Lafferty to solidify his game.

I think this would be more paying in cash to get better returns. For this year eating the 50% retention is because they can with Jake G being on LTIR. After DeSmith, I would have a shot at getting in games @ Wilkes-Barre so getting a recent 2nd rounder in goal would in it self be quite the coup.

I wouldn't call Johns a 7th D by any means but I see your point (and don't disagree) with keeping Schultz for the playoffs. A good part of this is gaining a RD going into next year at a cheap rate considering what is gonna be available.

After the deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>pharrow</b></div><div>they can get more than Roslovic for Schultz.
There was a study on how teams pick their NTC teams. One of the biggest issues for them was taxes, not teams being playoff teams.
Teams tend to rule out canadian teams due to the high tax rate. They tend to prefer teams in FL and NV where there is no state income tax. I'm sure Seattle will be into that group coming up.</div></div>
I wonder how that would work tax wise on salary retention if he were to be traded to a Canadian team or a state with higher/lower taxes. Does the trading team that retains send a check to the player for the salary or do they send it to the team that the player was traded to? To clarify, does the player pay taxes for the retained salary where the contract was signed or the new city.

I agree but given Jarry's limited sample, it would be nice to have some sort of insurance. If he continues his play the rest of the year and into the playoffs, I'd be happy to have to cap room next year.

Possibly. I think a lot of that could be decided with who they move this year and what the returns are. I don't expect them to get any 1st's with the players they have and are willing to move but they could certainly get a few 2nd's if others get needy enough.

I 100% agree if it was this years but for next year considering they are getting a (probable) franchise goalie, a B- prospect in POJ and a guy that should be good in Donato (system, attitude? - I dunno) would fast track that rebuild.
