If he is smart, he will try and get a 3 - 4 year bridge deal at a reasonable price and then get 1st line money after Ovi leaves. Agreed...4.5 mil per year might be a little low, but again he is only playing 15 mpg.</div></div>
How cool would it be if he signed for 5Mx8? The team gets under the cap next year somehow, and it gets a cheap 1LW for the first four years post-Ovechkin. Vrana gets $40M. Everybody wins.

If Vrana would sign 4.5Mx3, that would be a great deal for the team, but I doubt they'll offer him anything below about 5x5, even under a flat cap. Maybe 6 if he goes max term. He scores a lot of goals.

Because some coaches make dumb decisions. He should be getting way more minutes and double shifted. But o well, at least it will keep his AAV down lol Before the the season began I was thinking they would finally give him the minute he deserves so he would tear it up and get $7MM a year. Don't think that happens now. Probably closer to $6M.

His ice time is low because Lavy doesn't really trust him in defensive situations in the third period when the Caps get a lead. I'd love to see V get more ice time.

The impact that Chara has had on Jensen's game is amazing. Jensen has looked great recently. As far as Chara's play is concerned, I think he's exceeding expectations. I think the Caps were looking at him as more of a rotational piece, and he's been a regular in the lineup so far.

Playing 19 minutes a game for first place team, for just 795,000. Seems like one of the great value players this season.

After seeing what Orpik brought to WSH in his late 30s, I was hoping that a 43 year old Chara could help out on the penalty kill and be a good mentor for Siegenthaler and Fehervary. Instead, Chara's on a 23 point pace. Orpik got that many points once, when he was in his 20s. Chara's been amazing.

I don't think trading Wilson to another team in your division is very smart. I also don't think Namestnikov gets traded. That being said I do think this trade is pretty even value wise.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Ciccarelli22andOvi8</b></div><div>I can't be optimistic with Schultz. It is plain unforgivable to me.</div></div>
I'm confused by it. I'm guessing the logic is that Schultz got 51 points in 2016-17.
But last year Schultz was 8th in hits, 5th in blocks, and 5th in even strength points, and 7th in shot attempt percentage..... among defensemen playing for Pittsburgh.
Bobby Ryan for one year at $1 Million with six seasons over 50 points seems like a better bet than Justin Schultz at $4 million, with one season just over fifty points.
Yeah. But I'm sure the Caps' organization put a lot of thought into identifying team needs and decided they wanted an offensive defenseman.
It's funny because they actually do great at the draft going best-player-available all day, but then when they start analyzing team needs, they make these decisions that don't make any sense sometimes, and kind of ignore what is and isn't on the market.

edited after like: I'm trying to stay optimistic on Schultz. Maybe with Orlov, the two of them produce some offense? Or maybe they have a secret plan to trade Carlson for their next franchise wing. Those are my two thoughts, there. I suppose if it's the second one, it could be next summer, but as you pointed out, Schmidt didn't exactly return a future franchise player under a flat cap.

Management has gone mad
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Capitalfail67</b></div><div>Seems dramatic. How would you like them to address the defense ? I’m honestly curious. Do you consider Petterson a good defenseman? Do you know Schultz numbers away from JJ vs W him? Spoiler alert his numbers are WAY better without him. Capitals needed mobile Dmen and they went with Schultz. Hardly the same as Forsberg. Who at the time we traded for a 50 point player lol. Forsberg 2 years later turned into a great NHL player. Lmfao watch him be amazing next year. People love to complain.</div></div>
I'm honestly a pretty big BMac fan, and I've supported most of his moves. There was always some discernible logic to them. I'm still high on Panik, Hagelin, and Jensen even though those have had mixed results. I don't complain for the sake of complaining, this move's just flat out bad. Schultz was never good defensively, and since his injury he's not good offensively either. He had 12 points in 46 games while getting almost 3 minutes a night on a power play with Crosby and Malkin for ****'s sake! How is that even possible? If you don't care about points, the advanced stats community hates him too.
Evolving Wild: <a href="https://twitter.com/EvolvingHockey/status/1314659487446437889" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">"At a 2-year term, we projected $3 million. Schultz in an offensive defenseman who hasn't played much over the last two seasons and has been below replacement level in those minutes."</a>
Micah Blake McCurdy: <a href="https://twitter.com/IneffectiveMath/status/1314656309271310337" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">"Justin Schultz (2x4m with Washington) is simply inexplicable to me."</a>
The quarter of a season he played with Johnson pulls his numbers down, but not so much that the conclusion changes. And the worst part is, according to Pens fans he actually got <em>worse</em> as the season went on, which doesn't inspire any confidence in the idea that he just needs to fully heal from the ankle injury. The fact that his ice time dropped by about a minute in the playoffs and they dumped him with Johnson on the 3rd pairing seems to indicate the Pens realized he was getting worse too.
As for what I'd have done instead, there are a ton of better options available in FA (Vatanen, Tanev, Hamonic, Barrie, Brodie), rumored to be available for trade (Savard, Weegar, Goligoski, Demers, Larsson), or there for the taking via offer sheet (Cernak). I'd much rather have a defensively stable 2RD that can let Orlov join the rush more and play more aggressively and a lot of the guys I named are in that vein, but if the Caps were dead set on pairing Orlov with another puck-mover then Vatanen, Barrie, and Goligoski (with salary retention) all would've been better choices. Maybe a bit more expensive, but they're gonna have to dump salary anyway to fit Schultz so why not spend a bit more to get a guy that's <em>actually</em> good instead of one that you hope might maybe be good again if he can regain the form he had two years ago before he shattered his ankle?

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Capitalfail67</b></div><div>People on this site are normally short sighted or too stupid to know what this team actually needs. Schultz was paired with JJ all last year and coming off 2 terrible leg injuries. I’ll reserve judgement but for now it was a creative idea that brings in a player that’s a winner and can move the puck up ice well. Lav is a defensive coach so he can iron out the D zone issues.</div></div>
<a href="https://www.naturalstattrick.com/playerreport.php?fromseason=20192020&thruseason=20192020&playerid=8474602&sit=5v5&stype=2&stdoi=oi&rate=n&v=t" rel="nofollow noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">He was paired with Pettersson far more than with JJ.</a> Expecting defensemen who relied heavily on mobility to rebound after major lower body injuries is never a good bet. We just saw that with Kempny, and we saw it with Green's sports hernia surgery. I hate that we're staking the closing years of Ovie's window in part on the slim chance that Schultz would ever get back to what he once was after shattering his ankle. I haven't been this pissed off by a move since the Forsberg trade.

for the record. And to give credit where credit is due. Hainsey was the 1RD that year. Not Schultz.
Schultz was the guy who got 3 and 7 second shifts on the cup run as Sully tried to hide him on the ice. There are whole articles on the internet from the Post Gazzett and the trib explaining that.
