I am operating under assumption that Johnson >> Rask when considering contracts. So some of value for MIN is definitely in dumping Rask. They are tight on cap space and only have Koivu coming off the books (who will need replaced).

JJ has been solid this year but has no chemistry with Letang. Brodin would fit that mold much better. Wild and Pens were close to exchanging Rask and JJ earlier this year that where this idea comes from. And I believe the Wild would definitely get a prospect in the deal, just not one of the Pens top 4 (Poulin, Legare, Addison or Joseph).

Johnson might've slightly more value then Rask but probably not that much. This deal heavily favors Pittsburgh like i said if the Pens win the cup their 2020 1st round pick is #31 overall. Still think that Pittsburgh needs to add better sweeteners here.</div></div>
Brodin is UFA after next season.

I think our top 4 is set with Letang, Dumoulin, Petterson, and Schultz. I actually like Johnson and I think he's worth his contact if he keeps playing well just wish it wasn't another 3 years after this one. I don't like making trades just for the sake of trading especially since we have good players looking for minutes. If we're going to trade Johnson then do it for picks or a prospect and let Marino and riikola play</div></div>
I guess you haven't been watching much this season because Schultz has been very bad even when healthy and Marino is clearly top 4 at this point. Pettersson has been ok but been sheltered in his role.

That you're getting Brodin+Zucker for Galchenyuk pending UFA+Bjugstad+Pittsburghs 2020 1st round pick #31 overall if Pittsburgh win the cup. That's pure trash for Brodin and Zucker no way Minnesota accepts that.</div></div>
I am operating under the assumption that Johnson >> Rask since Rask has been in healthy scratch territory this season and last. So there's some value there for MIN. Add Bjugstad's value as a potential middle 6 option for next year + whatever middling pick Galchenyuk is worth and I think that is probably equal to Brodin's value? Then MIN is getting a 1st rounder and one of the Pen's best prospects for Zucker.

80M Cap.. swapping Sprong just makes too much sense
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>LetsTalkNHL</b></div><div>I think I have seen either yourself or someone else post this exact trade in the past. At the time, I did not really look into it, but I did my research now and realized that Andersson is actually a defenseman so this can make sense. I also get why you are trading him for Sprong as both have yet to really play in the lineup for a long period of time and both were drafted in the same year (only 7 picks apart). I would like to see him on the Pens, but at the same time, I feel like Sprong should crack the lineup by next season and he will want to prove his worth. I wonder if Calgary would trade him for other assets/picks, as they already have a strong defensive core and have other young defensemen in the system like Valimaki and Kylington. Any other way you see the Pens being able to acquire him?</div></div>
Yeah I posted this trade idea a while back and some other people thought it was a good idea too so I've seen it around on other posts. The question is where does Sprong crack the lineup in a meaningful (top 6/9) position? The RW depth is solid with Kessel, Horn, and Rust and then there is even more depth with guys like Sheary, Aston-Reese and Simon who have played both sides. Basically Sprong would have to carve himself a role by playing really well and pushing other people out of the lineup. That could happen. I just think the trade is so perfectly balanced and makes so much sense for both teams. I'm not sure what Andersson would be worth in other assets. Maybe something like Sheary/Rust + a pick could get it done but that is more difficult to figure out. CGY likes Sprong because of his potential: top 6 RW.

new brassard trade
I think it unlikely that the Pens include Cole or Sheary and even Jarry in any trade at this point as they are all probably considered crucial for the cup run this year. I'd love for the Pens to get Brassard but I think the trade would include the Pens 1st rounder as a starting point rather than current starting players. If OTT would retain some salary it could work.
How about 2018 1st, 2018 2nd + B prospect Conner Hall for Brassard with 1.25M retained?

Penguins Deadline
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>willinbulgaria</b></div><div>#1 - you're over the cap
#2 - Plekanec is worth a 2nd alone at trade deadline to a cup contender.
#3 - what do the habs get for retaining salary and helping out the Pens? (nothing is free in this world and they're not gonna retain half his salary out of the goodness of their hearts).</div></div>
#1 - Cap is pro rated, which is not reflected in this site. Pens could make this work cap wise.
#2/#3 - Almost no contenders have room for a 6 million dollar player at this point in the season, and Plek's play has been much more like a $3M center rather than a $6M one. Most of his salary has been paid out already so the Habs retaining really doesn't cost the Habs much actual money at this point. Retaining salary is a necessary thing for dealing to contenders at the deadline. I highly doubt you are getting a 1st round pick for a mediocre, expiring 3C.

I wouldn't give away Sheary for a 2nd but I like the Brassard trade. With Brass' cap pro rated through the rest of the year the Pens could make the cap work if the Sens retain about 1 million.

Very enlightening comment.
Sprong + 1st + more is the kind of offer that got us Kessel. Domi is a mid 1st rounder that hasn't panned out as well as expected. You seriously think that is worth 3 or more big pieces?

Gotta disagree with that. Arizona drafted him at 12 and since then I think most people would say he has declined in value, right? Sprong + 1st + definitely equals more than a #12 pick. And I don't value Sprong that highly, hes just the Pens only real prospect in the eyes of other teams. Maybe the Pens would need to add but what you're saying seems kind of ridiculous.

Going Big

Because they believe it sets them up better for their future. They're not contenders this year. And this gives them a good prospect in their team's biggest area of weakness as well as two picks that could end up being lottery picks - this would be a HUGE gamble for the Pens. (obviously one I think worth taking)

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>ShafferPens</b></div><div>Lowballed almost every contract.
Sheahan can’t get less than 2.075m, since he’s an RFA.</div></div>
Noticed you posting about RFAs on every pens team, thought I would tell you you're incorrect about Sheahan. Teams do not have to offer RFAs their qualifying offer - this happened two years ago with Schultz in PIT. He very clearly was not worth the 4M EDM had given him. So when that contract expired the Pens did not up that contract, they instead offered him 1.4M which he did sign. No guarantee the same would happen with Sheahan, but he had a horrible year last year and this year might not move the needle enough for him to be worth over 2M. So there is a way that he can get less than 2M and I think it is likely.

BOS-PIT trade
I don't think the trade is fair.. Career numbers for the two may be similar at this point but Sheary exploded last year and just signed a nice deal while Spooner doesn't appear to be on the upswing as much. Sheary's numbers last year almost all came at ES also - he is not just riding shotgun with Crosby, he is a legit top 6 winger.
