Canucks Off Season

$5.5MM is what Tavares is making. Horvat is good, but not that good.</div></div>
The Tavares comparison isn't a fair one as Tavares was signed 5 years ago. Better comparables would be Barkov (6 years @ 5.9), Couturier (6 years at 4.33) and Monahan (7 years at 6.73). I would say 5.5 over 7 years is a good deal for the Canucks for a 21 year old centre who is trending as an elite 2nd line centre with a solid two-way first line centre ceiling. 5.5 overs 7 years, or 5 over 5/6 years.

Great trade. Nice to have some validation after being slogged for two years on here for all those who have way underestimated Burrows value.

Yeah... but low 1st in a weak draft getting back a mid-3rd almost makes it a 2nd. Maybe make it a 3rd becoming a 1st if Boyle resigns. He is exactly the type of player they need in the 3/4 centre slot.

Fair enough. Thought here is that McDavid, Draisaitl, RNH, and Eberle will all play in the top six. Two are no-brainers. The other two are difficult contracts to move. Puljuarvi is a luxury given his position while Hanifin projects to fill a need. But I can see it both ways.

You would need a 1st in there for sure and I'm not even sure that would be enough. He's pegged to be their #1 d-man, they're not giving him away.</div></div>
Fixed it. Still think its worth it. Window is now and Hannifin sets them up for the future as well.

Dustin Brown
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>palhal</b></div><div><i>I know the Canucks are trying to be relevant for the relevant for then next few years (and beyond) but the trading is Sbisa for Brown is drawing out another bad contract down the line. Maybe the best method is for the Canucks is to bite the bullet short term and get their cap and talent level in a good level going forward. Though the signing of Ericsson and the trade for Gudbranson seems to me that the Canucks are just doing shorter term "fixes."
Hate to me negative but the Canucks seem to going the "Brian Burke" method of management when he was in Toronto which set the franchise back eight years. Maybe Benning and Linden should be playing on the ice instead of making player personnel decisions.</i></div></div>
The way I see it, with Eriksson on the Sedin's wing, it's not unreasonable to expect them to drive possession, score at a 2nd line rate, and produce on the PP. Hansen has proven he can be an effective two-way player who can chip in offensively and Horvat, Baertchi, and Virtanen have shown signs they aren't far off being able to do the same. Call that a really good 3rd line or another 2nd line. Burrows has shot suppression ability and can play the PK. Together with Sutter they are the basis of a very solid 3rd line. Etem has speed and size, Dorsett is physical. Both can be effective on a 4th line based on match ups. On defence you have Edler and Tanev as a very solid shutdown D pair who can drive possession. They don't produce much offence so call them a very solid second pairing. Hutton is on track to produce offence at a 1st pairing rate but it's only been a year and needs to be more solid in his own end. Gudbranson is physical but his underlying numbers aren't great. Call them a weak second pairing or an excellent bottom pairing. Tryamkin has shown enough potential to warrant bottom pairing minutes, so too has Pedan. Miller has proven to be above average, Markstrom as well, with Markstrom having upside that counter Miller's decline. So what you have is a team that has three solid middle lines, two decent middle pairing defence, and above average goaltending. They need a top line centre, a top line scoring winger, and a number 1 D. Granted, those are big pieces to have missing but is it possible they can emerge from Boeser, Juolevi, Virtanen, Horvat, Larsen, Rodin etc. or be acquired in free agency or through trade. Either way, the age and contract structure is trending in the right direction. As currently constructed its a team that can compete and possibly win a round or two in the playoffs. I'd rather that as an environment for developing young players (even if they are drafted later in the draft) then icing a junior squad. I'd also prefer that from a fan perspective.

Take his salary on in full, but also demand multiple picks and prospects. VAN has the money and cap space to eat that contact. They're probably not going to contend this year or next. Sorry. But if they can get young talented players then they should go for it. The sedin and miller money will come off the books shortly.</i></div></div>
I considered this but the years remaining make it a really difficult contract to swallow. I'd rather Brown at half price for 5 more years on 3rd/4th line, and give up Sbisa in order to make room for Tryamkin/Pedan.

That's a lot of money for middle six wingers. Not saying they won't get that but it's way beyond their value. If VAN can't get Eriksson on a reasonable term, I'd rather see them go for discounted players (Pirri, Vanek, Connolly, etc.)

Getting Lindholm
Giving up 3 first round picks might make sense if you are a playoff competitive team looking for a final piece that gets you to the cup. For a rebuilding/retooling team like the Canucks, those picks (mid to high 1sts) are too valuable IMO.

2nd tier UFAs
It is a bit rich for Pirri but he is a very young UFA who has put up .40 points a game over the past 3 years (roughly) while getting 3rd line minutes. There will be demand from other teams that drives up his AAV and term. I used Josh Bailey and Nio Niederter as rough comparables. Agree that Vanek is a risk. But he is a pure goal scorer who plays well with playmaking centres. Part of me prefers a one year deal on him in the 'Sedin window' to a multi year 5-6mil deal on a veteran who is likely to decline in the final 2-3 years (Lucic, Eriksson).

What would it take for Van to get Yak? Oiler fans feedback welcome.
Guess it depends on whether you believe Yakupov still has a relatively high ceiling despite lack of evidence after 4 years. Rumour out there was that his current value was a 3rd round pick so that shows you how much his stock has fallen. A 3rd round pick is also what PIT got got Beau Bennett (another failed to launch high 1st rounder reclamation project). With increased ice time and better line mates maybe he starts to produce offensively, mainly due to his good one-timer, but he is inconsistent, weak defensively and is a terrible away from the puck so doesn’t fit in a bottom six role and hasn’t produced like a top six player. If you were being optimistic on his future maybe you give up 2nd second round picks. This is what BOS gave up for Brett Connolloy who put up similar numbers over a similar time span after also being a high first rounder for whom expectations where unmet. In this case, Hansen and a 2nd is fair value as I see Hansen being flipped to a contender for a 2nd near the deadline (this one or next). That said, I'd prefer the two picks and an open spot for a UFA to Yakupov.

Dreaming of PK
A future 1st/2nd line C (Dubois), a solid two-way 2nd/3rd line C (Horvat), a defensively responsible puck moving top 4 D on a reasonable contract (Tanev), and a veteran 3rd/4th line defensively responsible PK specialist who drives possession (Burrows) is too much for P.K. Burrows at 3mil is high but he only has two years remaining and can still contribute when slotted in the bottom six. Rumour this morning on TNS 1040 was that ask ask from EDM is Draisaitl and the 4th. From there you have to think the ask from VAN is Horvat, the 5th and a sweetner (one of Hansen, Burrows, prospect, pick.)

It's a lot of moving parts and effort. In terms of this specific MTL-VAN trade, I'd rather a 2nd round pick over a 3rd and Friberg.

Subban and UFAs
Fair enough. Maybe the 9th overall is too much of an ask. Swap it for a 2nd round pick and maybe its more palatable? In any case it's a long shot. MTL probably asks for Tanev and Horvat which is a deal breaker for VAN. EDM likely has the better assets to get this done. And realistically, I don't see MTL trading him... just playing around with what it would look like.

Considered Turris/Stone/Hoffman, and while they have some two-way ability, felt Schenn, Couturier and Simmonds were a stronger two-way third line and went with all three for teammate familiarity sake. Turris and Stone are right at the top of the list though.
