Playmaking centers who play responsible defense that can win face-offs while not taking lazy penalties and not be a turnover machine are assetts. Kuznetsov is none of those.

Mantha has never scored 30 goals and hasn't hit 20 in 4 years and Sprong has 31 goals his entire career. Ovechkin and Oshie are the only 30 goal scorers the Caps have had since Alexander Semin 11 years ago and even Oshie has only hit 30 once.

Outside of Ovechkin and Oshie (who may go to Seattle) who are all of these "goal scorers" they are so "loaded" with? A few guys who can chip in 20 goals a year are not "goal scorers"

Monahan has 7 seasons of 20+ goals and 3 of those were 30+ goals. I'll take that along with a lower cap hit over Kuznetsov and his terrible defensive play, faceoff ability and lazy stick infractions.

You mean Kuznetsov and Orlov? Backstrom is a far better value than Kuznetsov even at a higher salary and Oshie is 36th in the league the past 3 years in total goals and 16th in PP goals and is a key penalty killer and arguably the heart and soul of the team. Meanwhile Orlov contributes absolutely nothing on special teams and only had 1 point in his first 18 games this season though he has been better lately, outside of not missing games he doesn't offer a whole lot and will be 30 soon.

PossiblebControversial opinion
It's more a combination of greed from ownership and the league itself and the trickle down effect of fans being overcharged. It shouldn't cost $500.00 for a family of 4 to go to a game but tickets/tax/concessions/parking become ridiculously expensive. I used to love going to games but now i don't care if i ever attend another game in person.

Dillon leads the D in hits, is a key penalty killer and brings an element of toughness that the defense lacks outside of himself and Chara who may not be back. Orlov has not been a factor on special teams at all this year though he is quite good even strength.

Completely agree. Oshie now and probably at the end of his contract is still better than Johansson has ever been. Also, I don't understand why every armchair GM on this site is hellbent on trading Dillon away. I'd be more in favor of trading Orlov who makes 1.2 million more.

Is this enough to stay competitive if Ovie left
I'm convinced that there was already a verbal agreement in place to re-sign Ovechkin before they traded Vrana. They may wait until after the expansion draft to announce the contract so they can protect an additional forward from Seattle.

Hard to say, they just re-signed Sheary for 2 years so it depends if they think McMichael will be ready to take the 3C role or if they could sign a veteran cheaper than Eller who currently makes 3.5 million

Of course they can. It would actually help if Ovechkin waits to re-sign after the expansion draft. Then they could protect Backstrom, Kuznetsov, Wilson, Oshie, Mantha, Sprong and Eller/Sheary as their 7 forwards. If he re-signs before the expansion draft then someone else has to be exposed.

So lose Oshie to expansion and then trade 2 defensively responsible LHD for bad picks to start 2 rookies on the left side of the defense and trade Vanecek who is already under contract to play Lundqvist who is an uncomfortable sneeze away from retirement? Sounds like a super good plan :tearsofjoy

I guess it depends how much value a late 1st round pick has in this years draft. The 2nd rounder was basically to get rid of Panik and his 2.75 million cap hit to free up space to re-sign Ovechkin/Samsonov/Chara. They probably still need to move another contract, maybe Orlov.

Actually it's not hard to admit. I agree it was an over payment but not a fleecing as you suggest. Mantha has scored in every game so far as a Capital. Both picks will be low in their respective rounds and this years draft is the biggest unknown in NHL history. The Capitals still have their 1st next year and are known for finding great players late in the 1st round.

Does Mantha continue his goal scoring streak tonight against NYI? He scored in his final game with Detroit and his first four games with Washington. Will he make it 6 games in a row?

You may be right, I feel like Orlov would be a good option for Seattle as he's extremely durable in recent seasons and has enough experience to take on a leadership role while still being relatively young. The fact that he makes nearly 6X more than Alexeyev is why i'd make him available. I hope Sheary stays with the Caps, he's been a tremendous fit.

Schultz... I thought would have been least likely since he has one only year remaining (after expansion draft)</div></div>
I feel like the Capitals will need to shed roughly 5 million from their current cap to re-sign Ovechkin and Samsonov not even factoring in whether Kempny will be back off of LTIR or if Chara may be interested in returning. I don't see Ovechkin taking less than 10,000,000 even in a flat cap. Orlov makes 5.1 so it's perfect and the Caps get to keep Oshie in this scenario and open a spot at LHD for Alexeyev or Fehervary.

Personally, I'd rather protect Dillon over Orlov because of cap hit and if Orlov got selected just bring up Alexeyev and Fehervary and let them duel it out for a roster spot.

Schultz and Carlson are the guys who have a lot of power play experience/skill, so neither seems likely to be given away. I could see Schultz being exposed in expansion more easily than the above trade.</div></div>
Also, the Capitals depth at RHD tails off significantly after Carlson and Schultz. If Schultz goes away then Jensen becomes a Top-4 and Van Riemsdyk becomes an everyday 3rd pairing guy. The other option would be to bring up Fehervary although he is a left shot and provides nowhere near as much offense.

If it cost only a 1st round bust to dump Brett Connolly on the Blackhawks, then it shouldn't cost a 1st with no lottery protections to dump Panik.
I see Carl Hagelin has regressed significantly from when he was in his prime and has the same cap hit and term as Panik.
Would you pay the Flames a 1st to dump Hagelin as well?
I didn't think so :P</div></div>
Hagelin has more value to the Caps than Panik did. Hagelin actually leads the Caps forwards in penalty killing time on ice per game and still has very solid speed. He also has committed only 6 minor penalties all year and is one of only 4 forwards to play every game for Washington. Panik had already lost his job to Sprong so the comparison is beyond ridiculous.

A Gaudreau trade with Washington is considered if Ovechkin does not re-sign with Washington. </div></div>
I would not be surprised if there is already a contract verbally agreed upon that won't be signed until after the expansion draft which is why the Vrana/Panik over payment happened in the 1st place. They have cost certainty with Mantha and freed up almost 3 million by trading Panik. Vrana was the 2nd best goal scorer on the team, there's no way they trade him if they weren't re-signing Ovechkin.

I can't foresee any scenario where the Capitals trade for Gaudreau, especially not for that ridiculous overpayment. He wouldn't bump Ovechkin or Mantha out of the top-6 and they have Wilson, Oshie and Sprong on the right side.

Eichel averages about 6 more points per 82 games over Kuznetsov since 2015. Kuznetsov had a legitimate shot at the 2018 Conn Smythe and is a Stanley Cup Champion while Eichel has played 0 playoff games in his career. The gap is probably not as wide as you think.
