Quoting: GenXHockey

I've had this argument dozens of times and have never been wrong. A players value isn't gauged by the situation of the team but by the demand for the player.

In most cases, yes this is true.

But there also haven't been really any teams in the same situation as Minnesota is heading into. 99% of teams wouldn't openly buy out such large contracts like Parise and Suter because of the dead cap implications. Most of the time, teams would just let the contract run to its end or the player gets injured and the contract gets thrown onto LTIR (Seabrook, Hossa, Savard, Clarkson, Horton, Weber etc).

There are a lot of if's, and's, or but's in this case, but here are the "facts" that I think we can both agree on.... Minnesota cannot afford to re-sign Fiala, they seemingly do not want to keep him, and they can't just ignore trading him because the NHLPA would eventually file some sort of grievance and force it. While it might not hurt his value a lot, it does.

Also while I agree as well that a teams value of Fiala is subjective, the general consensus around the hockey world isn't some crap that journalists are pulling out of their a**es. They have sources from within NHL front offices and 99% of their reporting aren't op-ed pieces. They are delivering the message of what they are told from those very same sources. So if the word going around is that Fiala isn't worth the 2nd overall pick, then most likely any trade discussions going on (if it's NJ and MIN) aren't including that pick. The NHL has started to steer into an analytic's-heavy environment, and Fiala outshined Nylander in nearly all offensive and defensive statistics (beyond just goals and assists).

2nd overall pick > Fiala
Fiala > Nylander
Nylander =/= 2nd overall pick

Quoting: Icedragon4405

What r u trying to say. Ruff is the right guy. Ruff is gonna coach them to the Stanley cup. Ruff was an ok transition coach. They need to move past that and be a competitive team next year. Ruff is not the guy

I'm not saying Ruff is going to bring us a Cup because I can't predict the future. I'm not going to argue about things you realistically can't prove. Just saying Fitz is a fool and Ruff "isn't the guy" is not condusive to a proper argument. "Better" coaches on the market do not mean they are the right coach for our team. We could've had Laviolette, we could've had Gallant, we could get Cassidy, and we could get Trotz. But what's the one thing they all have in common? They are all known for being terrible at developing young talent. Do you really want them managing a roster that over 50% are it's players under the age of 26? Ruff has done wonders with our young players such as Bratt, Nico, and Jack and the kids love playing for him.

What I am saying that there is a large majority of the fanbase that refuses to actually look at the facts and realize Ruff is not the problem. Coaches are always the first to go because it's the easiest job to replace, but a lot of the time they are not at fault. Ruff cannot control that we went through 6 different goalies this year, who all posted a combined 31st place in 5v5 save percentage. Ruff cannot control that Hughes got injured for nearly 30 games this year, while Dougie was out for 20. He's not flawless, and I'm not saying he is. But the biggest issues that plagued the team this year (injuries, poor goaltending, and a s*** powerplay (Recchi's responsibility)), are not reasons to fire him. He deserves one more season because in the s***storm of bad things that happened this year, a lot of good happened that many are too ignorant to take into account.

Quoting: uncle_toto

I know Habs had interest in Zacha at the TDL, but either Marek or Friedman recently reported that they only inquired about him and never really negotiated. As it stands now, Habs are over the cap so if they did trade for Zacha, salary would have to head the other way. That said, paying a 2 + 3 for a career high 36 points is pretty steep and Habs are in no position to be sacrificing assets for more of the same.

This is based on nothing but my gut, but I could see a Drouin-Zacha type swap: two players drafted high who have never really lived up to expectations and could use a change of scenery. Both also carry very little risk seeing as how Drouin only has 1 year left on his contract and NJD could move on after next season if the fit wasn't right. As for Zacha, Habs wouldn't be obligated to sign him long-term and could walk if things didn't work out.

One thing that I'd argue is "wanting more cap flexibility": NJD is one of the rare teams who have their key pieces signed long-term and aren't currently in a cap crunch. Aside from Bratt this season and Yegor next year, there's no other contract that really stands out to me. I'd argue that they're in good financial health.

Lots of talent in New jersey. They're gonna be fun to watch these next few years.

Cheers!

Yea! Totally makes sense. Not sure if you saw my notes above but the trades were mostly to represent the expected return. MTL was jsut a choice because they were linked to him at some point. You also should look at the PPG rather than total. Last year he was on a 57 point pace while this year 40+. He just turned 25 as well, so hes got good room to grow. I like a late 2nd and a 3rd is fair; we just don't need to take $ back in the deal.
