I think people are down on Liljegren because it feels like he's been around forever; the kid's only 21 though, I think he should be tier 2 with Sandin, Robertson, and Amirov. I like his game a lot, in his limited minutes with the Leafs his passing was SO good. I'm excited to see him around this year.

This.
Sure we don’t always agree with their decisions, and even they get it wrong sometimes, but it’s silly when fans call the GM’s or coaches stupid, or worse, think their opinion is better than NHL GM’s or coaches. You can’t argue with that level of stupidity.

Leaf fans, in general (not calling anyone out specifically), are the most delusional hockey fans on the planet. Yes. Burke has more knowledge than the entirety of leaf fans combined. Same goes for boston. Same goes for every fan base.

I say yes, but not until after the expansion draft. The Leafs are fine this season, and can get that younger quality D next summer.

At this point, no. Keep developing guys like Sandin and Liljegren and hopefully you can work them into your top-4 some point soon. If they didn't get Brodie, I'd say maybe but he's a huge add. I think they're better off keeping Nylander now

This was discussed to death a while ago and the answer depends on who you ask.
People who align with Burke's thinking and preferred playstyle will say yes. These same people wanted Nylander traded a long time ago anyways, because his skillset involves being a good skater and possession player over being a heavy hitter. Sacrificing their offense power for a better blueline would give them the depth they need to get farther in the playoffs.
People who align with Dubas' thinking and preferred playstyle will say no. Nylander is an analytical darling and any defenseman that could be brought in wouldn't be worth the long term investment. Their right side already has 4 NHL guys on it: Brodie, Holl, Bogosian and Dermott. Just yesterday people will talking about Lijegren being a bust and another defenseman would further set him down the depth chart.
Personally I'm in the camp that thinks Toronto shouldn't trade Nylander. I feel the team is fine going into next season - and a lot of people would end up missing Nylander.

brian burke was leafs gm for nearly 5 years and basically sunk the franchise. team didn't make the playoffs once. in fact, unless you count him walking onto an already complete anaheim roster, he hasn't built a playoff team since the canucks in the early 2000s, and even then they were only a second round team (3 first round exits in 4 appearances).
brian burke is 100% wrong about trading nylander - the leafs don't need a top defenceman, they've got 2 in the last 2 years in Muzzin and Brodie, and it cost them a combined price of trevor moore, a first round pick, and a B- tier prospect.
nylander broke out this year and was scoring at a 36 goal pace, he had 31 goals in a shortened season. After Keefe took over and gave him more ice time he was playing at a 42 goal pace. Why are we trading him?

I think he's half right. The leafs should not go out of their way to trade Nylander, but if the right package comes along, they should do it for sure. Nylander is a non necessity.

Bold prediction
As a hawks fan, if we put together that package and only got Nylander in return I would be livid. Not trying to knock Nylander but I don’t think he’d come close to bringing in that return, as these assets stand now. If Mitchell pans out the way he is projected, Toronto might have their new top RD for the next 10 years. (Might be top guy, not guarantee, his potential is very high). That 1st rounder is likely a lottery pick. A rebuilding team trading away their first rounder is a move no NHL should ever make. Every asset going to Toronto has great value. Adding Dermott and the 3rds feel like throw in pieces. So as things stand now, that’s an easy no for me. I have no problem saying that is way too much for Nylander. He is not that special to warrant that return.
However, this trade is for 2022. These assets value will change by then. Could this trade make sense in 2022? Yeah it could. Could it be a bad trade for Toronto or a bad trade for Chicago? Yeah it could. But evaluating everybody where they stand now, I’d have to say no as a hawks fan.

Nylander is the Problem
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JaredOfLondon</b></div><div>Its almost like they are two vastly different sports that dont compare in style or strategy at all.
The leafs didnt lose because they had "nothing behind them" they lost because they played a top 3 team in the league twice and a top 5 team once while getting questiable goaltending, having crap luck injuries and one of their better players suspend himself out of the equation
Yet they still took those teams to the brink twice and 1 game shy the other time.
Then they got hilariously goaltended this year</div></div>
Tampa didn’t have Stamkos and still won. How? Their depth stepped up. They got goals throughout their lineup. It’s next man up mentality. They had enough depth to replace Stammer and move guys up the lineup. Imagine if Stamkos was healthy it was already the easiest run for a team since the Kings did it for a 2nd time. Doesn’t that mean the lightning are the one of the best teams to ever do it. They had power forwards on every line with Palat, Killorn, Goodrow, Maroon. There needs to be guys that hit and fight for pucks in the corner on every shift. Top guys need to do that too where Matthews already does it, so does Tavares and Marner is too small but he’s really good with his stick so the only one that doesn’t is Nylander. He can learn but he hasn’t yet. I like him he’s just a casualty of the cap ceiling

The Canadiens add real playoff performers (stanley cup champions) in Edmundson, Toffoli, and Allen while having a lesser version of Tom Wilson (Josh Anderson). Who did the Leafs add? A Buffalo reject in Jimmy f***ing Vesey? He will sure show them how to go for a cup run. I hope he never sees a game in a Leafs jersey. I don't like the kid.

Hits remove the opposing player from the puck and it’s an effective way to stop the other teams transition into the offensive zone. It’s one of the only real ways to stop the cycle down low. It’s the reason most teams can effectively and freely cycle the puck in the leafs end. Forechecking effectively involves hitting too.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>jchafe77</b></div><div>Idk about you, but im not expecting Willy, Matthews, Marner, Rielly and Tavares ALONE to deliver a stanley cup. There needs to be a balance of toughness, want, depth and skill to have a championship team. Look at Tampa as an example. Point, Stamkos, Hedman and Kurcherov are your "skillfull" guys.. your superstars. Your added depth is Cirelli, Palat, Gourde and Sergachev, these guys are the support to your foundation (your core players). Then we see those players who are full of want and desire.. those who are not afraid to get there nose dirty and crash bodies. These players are what HELPS your core players do what they do best. Coleman, Goodrow, Bogosian, McDounagh, Maroon, Paquette and Cernack... these guys want to run you over on the ice...
Now, name me at least 5 players on the leaf's that play with the same amount of passion and determination like the players I just listed.. (Coleman, Goodrow etc..)(They dont have to be identical playing styles, but similar qualities)</div></div>
The Leafs only have three in Bogosian, Hyman, and Muzzin.
