DeBrincat on the reduced QO thoughts
Ottawa should accept this trade IMO.
However, given that DJ Smith and Jack Capuano are coaching our team, I think the folks running our team would be more interested in someone like Matt Martin instead of Wahlstrom.
And unlike some people on here, I think Pageau is worth the contract he's signed to.

What is up with everyone's fascination of trading Pageau?? He is an awesome center that is good in many areas of the game. Having him and Horvat for years to come will be lethal for mismatches.

Leaf fans talk to me on Engvall
One reason Engvall, doesn't hit as much as Neanderthal Leaf wants, is because he one of few bottom enders that can actually stickhandle in tight quarters. Most other 3rd or 4th, throw the puck in the corner and then try to retrieve it, which adds to their non productive hit count.
Engvall, good skater, stickhandler, creative enough though not a so much of a scoring touch.....but good enough for 15 goals a year. Fine defensively. Good value at 2.2m.

The dream
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DefenseFirst</b></div><div>I think the league thinks more highly of Chiarot, and Manson than it does mayfield. First off, he’s never been a 21 minute per night guy. Prior to this season, he’s never been a 20 minute a night guy, and now he’s at 20:47. Chiarot was playing 23:34 at the time of the trade. That’s just my two cents.
And yes, they would likely just be depth pieces in boston in and out of the lineup.</div></div>
Saying he's "never been a 20 minute guy" when his last 3 seasons are 19:57, 19:29, & 19:46 is a little bit of splitting hairs and a little bit of not paying attention to how Barry Trotz rolled out his lineups (hint: no Islander came closer than 1:07 less per night than Chiarot's 23:34 on a terrible Habs team last year.) He got top-4 minutes on a team that has ranked 1st, 6th, 2nd, 10th, and now 13th in goals against, and got 21+ playoff minutes per night on back to back conference finalists.
And saying "i think the league thinks more highly of player x" is a completely subjective take - Josh Manson went 5 years without winning a single playoff game, how relevant do you think he really as around the league?

The dream
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>DefenseFirst</b></div><div>Show me this precedent.</div></div>
Caveat: this deal is awful for Boston if you're only going to use Mayfield & Parise as your 7th D/13th F. It doesn't make sense for the Bruins to be adding Mayfield with their RHD depth, and while Parise isn't a bad guy to add, he's a third liner at best here.
But the precedent for Mayfield being a highly valued asset at the deadline is easy to find. Mayfield gets 21 minutes per night on a team in the top half of the league in terms of goal prevention, and is the #1 Dman in terms of TOI on the 5th best PK in the league. He's a pending UFA on a $1.45M cap hit. The obvious comps for me are Ben Chiarot and Josh Manson - both had a higher cap hit *with full retention* than Mayfield's ($1.75M for Chiarot, $2.05M for Manson). Mayfield's possession numbers are stronger than both guys' numbers were on their old teams at last year's deadline, he has about the same amount of playoff experience as a top 4 guy that Chiarot had at last year's deadline (and more than Manson), and even advanced stats like GSVA put Mayfield on par or better than Chiarot & Manson were at last year's deadline.
Chiarot got that 1st, a 4th, & Ty Smilianic; Manson got a 2nd and a much stronger prospect in Drew Helleson. While I think it's more likely Mayfield's package resembles Manson's, I don't think it's crazy to think a team could goose their offer to a 1st rounder if there was a bidding war. For all the talk about Gavrikov being the belle of the deadline ball for defensemen, Mayfield has been more productive than him - and again, that cap hit can't be beat. Gavrikov with full retention comes in at a mere $50K cheaper than Mayfield's full hit.

What are you even saying?... Ben Chariot went for a first round pick and a prospect. Scott Mayfield is significantly better and is an amazing playoff player.

Is this your first deadline?
Big, bottom pair Dman who can play in the top 4 with the right partner. He checks every box to get that return (see Chiarot and Savard trades for recent examples).

Glaring holes
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>joshelkin</b></div><div>I didn't hate the Bolduc decision. He looked great. Tbh the guy who could have sat was Romanov. Have not been overly impressed with him recently</div></div>
The Bolduc thing just confuses me on a few levels. First off, while I like the kid and think he will be a good NHL player, all of a sudden the team is full steam ahead with giving rookies significant roles? After jerking around Wahlstrom, Raty, Dufour, Salo, & Bellows (okay maybe that one was right), I'm just surprised that they're going all in with him. And honestly, I don't get why they wouldn't pair him with Mayfield and leave Romanov with Dobson - Romanov-Mayfield is just an awful pairing, stylistically, and feels like you're completely tanking your nominal 3rd pair for the sake of getting Bolduc with Dobson.
Again, I'm sure there's a hundred other things that go into it, and Lambert obviously has miles more coaching experience than I do, but it just feels like those kind of decisions fly in the face of conventional wisdom and, like you said, probably contributed to blowing a 2 goal lead against a pretty bad Vancouver team last night (oh, and thanks Anthony, glad to see you remembered how to score a GD goal the second you left the Island.)
