<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>evelutions2</b></div><div>I guess I’m asking cause the OP has the Caps paying a 2nd to dump the full cap hit of Mantha. Considering the high chance of Kuznetzov being moved in the off season I would be more than willing to bet that the 2023-24 campaign would be a retool year so they can gear up for a big push in 2024-25, which could potentially be Ovi’s last year. You lose 2.8mil in space for next season, but have no repercussions the next year, whereas the buyout penalty would take away 2.5mil from 2024-25. That impact could be compounded if the Caps are unable to find a 3rd party to help with retention on Kuzy, potentially taking away 1.8-2.8mil extra from the cap. If need be the Caps might be able to get a mid to late round pick for eating half on Mantha, which is miles better than having to move a high 2nd round pick. It would just be much better asset management to go the retention route and potentially get something for him, rather than pay to dump him or buy him out.</div></div>

With ovi's age you have to take it one season at a time. You're right that it's better long term to just bite the bullet and retain this year, but there is no guarantee that they will still be going for it in 24-25 if they have another season like they did this year. At this point for them it really depends on who you can get in for that cap space. If they need all 5.7m to get a guy like Schmaltz or Konecny, go ahead and attach the second. If they only need 4.5 for Compher, buy him out or retain 1.5m. If they can't get anyone else in, keep him and hope a new coach can get more out of him.

Basically in everything they do the ability to maximize next year will far outweigh future considerations. Obviously what they did at the deadline this year helped set them up better long-term, but I think people also forget that it is what sets them up best for next year too. Strome, Milano, Jensen, TVR, Wilson all could have gotten massive returns if thats what they cared about, but they don't.
