Dunno if Caps need to "dump" Mantha. In terms of much they've invested in him, it'd look very bad to give up on him like this.

Agree but I think they might cut their losses here since most likely Backstrom won't retire and Oshie looks to give it another try.

If they can simply make the cap work I'd just keep Mantha and give him a chance under new coaching. He never really did well with Laviolette, and he's gone now,

I know McGinn looks like he was a cap dump that was brought in from Pitt, because it was clear he wasn't working there, but there is more to the story than that. Guy is a gritty, grinding bottom 6 with high compete and is good on the PK. We don't mind that his deal is a bit rich for what he brings to the table, we won't have any cap issues while he is with the team, and he is there to make the bottom 6 an absolute pain to play against. It is the Verbeek MO, win or loose, Verbeek will get a piece of you.

Mantha, on the other hand, is owed 6.5 million in real money, more than his 5.7 million cap hit, and as I have mentioned in previous Mantha to Anaheim deals, the likelihood that we can flip him at the TDL is low, since he can't seem to get through a season healthy. We'd be taking on unnecessary risk to get 40-50 games of Mantha with the above trade.

This deal isn't something that interests us.

Well, they might have to if they want to get that new top 6 forward GM was mentioning year end. Someone would have to move off in order to make salary room. Most people I've seen here see him as dump or to get rid of him, you have to take back another contract (bad or not). Otherwise yes they could find someone to use him for the year but Caps don't generally make it a habit retaining salary. They actually seem to rather give up an asset instead. This could go many ways this offseason or maybe the new coach would love him and give him a top 6 spot and just leave him there for the year to see what he really can do over a season. He certainly wasn't given that chance this past year you are aware. wink

A deal I proposed previously was Mantha + WSH 2023 2nd for Comtois RFA rights and MIN 2023 3rd.

Anaheim gets payment for parking Mantha's cap hit for the year, gives him a top 6 spot to try and have a resurgence, maybe he is healthy and moved at the TDL, maybe he isn't. It is a high pick, but it's covering the likelihood that Mantha cant be flipped because he is on IR.

Washington gets a younger, physical replacement for Mantha who will cost much less, but still has some offensive upside. Anaheim players who leave have a tendency to bounce back in a big way (Milano, for example).

Posted this earlier today: https://www.capfriendly.com/forums/thread/702151?post_id=4014275

Hoffman for Mantha swap, Hoffman is actually a better player (was last year, was the past 3 years, was for their entire careers). The swap would save the caps $1.2M. Hoffman could also be bought out if desired.

Washington fans didn't seem interested though.

Another possibility is Joel Edmundson, would save the caps $2.2M, but I think if Mantha is coming back habs would like to be rid of Hoffman.

mcginn is owed 5.5m in real money and stinks, they already gave NAK 1.25 to run around and hit everyone while also unlike mcginn not getting caved in. have said it so many times before i feel like im going crazy but a mantha buyout is not very tough for the caps to eat and would be in fact a lot easier than giving a 14th forward 2.75m for the next two years.

I would agree with you on the buyout, but if El Bashier from the Athletic is in the know, he said a buyout of Mantha was unlikely...fwiw

He's owed 5.5 million in real money across two seasons, as opposed to Mantha's 6.5 for one, really not seeing the point you are trying to make here......
You don't think McGinn is a good fit on the Caps that's fine, but trying to use two years pay, which is still a million bucks less than Mantha's one year pay, as justification for "hE sUcKs" is dumb and intentionally missing the point that we are trying to keep yearly costs down.
He's here to hit things and make out bottom 6 difficult to play against, yeah, he is overpaid, but we're not the ones with cap issues, and it makes no sense for us to pay a pick with him just to take Mantha.

We don't need cap, and we don't need Mantha, whether Washington is going to try and revitalize Mantha in a top 6 role or should dump him elsewhere and use the cap space to acquire a different top 6 forward is a matter of debate for your side of the aisle. We've set out price if you want to send him here, and it requires WSH 2023 2nd coming with Mantha.
