I like the direction you're going here, but that Right D is pretty rough. There's enough cap left to upgrade and bump Stone out of the top 4 maybe, but I can't see us going into the season with that group on D. Also not sure how I feel about Neal as 2RW. I'm in the bounce back camp there too, but still a bit too risky.

Thanks for pointing that out. That description was a carry over from another TO trade I had in there with Kadri. Fixed it now.

CGY Trade
I think Brodie would be a great target for MTL and Calgary would have some interest in Young wingers (RW more than LW), but I really don't think Bennett is going anywhere. Certainly not as part of that package. He holds more value to The Flames than he would in a trade, so I am guessing he stays.
Maybe something involving Shaw and Brodie could work.

This is one of the better rosters I have seen (and that includes my attempts! haha).
Agreed Talbot might not be possible, but as a back-up plan Smith on a 1 year for $1MM isn't the worst decision and would open up some space. Rittich might sign for slightly less than that as well.
My lone concern really is Neal on that 3rd line. Backlunds would become the shutdown line, and Neal just isn't that guy. I could see Mangiapane moved up the 3rd line with Backlund and moving Bennett over the the RW side. Then Drop Neal down to 4th line and move him up if there are injuries.
I also like people keeping Fantenburg around. I thought he was a good option back there in the playoffs.

Tweaking the Flames - Brodie Frolik Neal
Would love to get Lehner! As I was putting this together I originally had him in there, but as I thought about it I am not sure Lehner would want to leave the Islanders after he had a breakout year there and they took a chance on him. My guess is he stays there.
With the new Yelesin signing in Calgary, he would be where Polak is and is at half the price. I'm guessing Kylington is traded too, but not sure to who or for what.

Tweaking the Flames - Brodie Frolik Neal
Not sure I completely agree with that, but I do understand Frolik isn't as impactful as he has been in the past. With that said, he still holds value and there are a number of teams that would part with a 3-4th rounder (plus possibly a prospect) for him. It doesn't have to be MTL.

Haha... One of the more random nicknames in the league, that's for sure! My thinking on Klimchuck as well - This is his year to prove he's capable of being an NHL player. I think he has the tools to be useful in the bottom 6.

It would be awesome if Dube made that push. I like him a lot, but I also am not willing to give up on Bennett yet. This year will be his make or break year. If he performs reasonably well, but doesn't wow and Dube comes in and plays great, then I think Bennett becomes a piece in a trade for a #1 goalie.
Looking forward to the next few years. We have most of the pieces now!

Totally agree. I mentioned in my description that the trades were all just afterthoughts to get the players off the team, not really an attempt at fair value. I retained $1.5mm on Brouwer cause he is most likely to be bought out than traded.
Goalie is my biggest concern, but I think that Calgary tries to turn a Prospect, a Goalie Prospect and picks (some combination) into a number one at some point - likely next Draft, cause that's where Tre likes to do his work!

Looks pretty similar to my wish list too! Though I'm curious what it would look like with Lindholm and Neal flipped as well.
I agree with Canadianape though, our best bet is to keep a spot open for a prospect. If we can unload Stone's salary without bringing in anyone else's then when Brouwer is bought out next year we have a lot of money to work with for Chucky's raise and signing a new goalie.

What would I do as Flames GM.
I like where you are going with this, though I complete agree with rtapp that Bennett likely doesn't get moved if Frolik goes (or at all this year). If FLA is willing to make that trade for Frolik, I think Calgary would be wise to do it and trading a Top 9 for defensive depth is exactly what this team needs (along with unloading Stone).
The goalie situation is the biggest questionmark. I think Calgary wants to leave room for a you guy to step up, but right now if you could trade one of them in a package to get a legit long-term solution, I think you have to do it. The flames have a window that is now wide open for a few years, and we don't have time to wait out a young goalie (they aren't all Matt Murrays!).

I have this exact same trade sitting unpublished on my account. If Tre had the guts to pull this off we would really be set up for the next 4 years with a very solid roster. Pipe dream though I think. Not sure what the rules are around arbitration. I think you can trade a player but the other team has to deal with the arbitration case??? Or in this instance, probably just sign him before arbitration. 6.5 might not be enough, and then what happens to Chucky next year when he is due his raise!

I don't think Calgary would move Tkchuck and I given he is in line for a massive pay day soon I'm not sure that would make sense for the Wild either. I could see Calgary including either Jankowski or Andersson in a package for Zucker and Ennis. Ennis is negative value, so there would definitely be an add, but not a massive one from Calgary. Only way that MIN makes the deal though is if they are really desperate in their Cap situation (which they kind of are).
FWIW, I really want Zucker on the Flames!

Though there are sexier line-up posted, this feels very probable given all the chatter out there. I'm not thrilled with Chucky on the 3rd line, but that's more of a 2A/B situation anyway and there is lots of flexibility. Good work!

Interesting. I know Pacioretty is much better than Bennett at this stage, but I am hesitant to give up on Bennett just yet. Not sure what MTL's take on this would be either. Personally, I'd rather target the MIN 3 or Stone in OTT to see if we can pry them loose. Pacioretty is going to want more $$ than I think the flames should spend on that type of player. Not an unrealistic line-up though.

I did hear that, but I don't see them getting that based on play right now. I am hoping that Tre will bridge him for 2-3 years on a reasonable raise and then he can prove he is worth $5mm a year (or likely more). $2.5MM might be low for the bridge deal, but I would think it would be south of $4MM.
Your right though, it they go long-term with Hanifin then that blows the budget for this roster.

Agreed. That's too much given up by the flames. Hamilton for Hanifin & Lindholm, with maybe a slight add by Calgary only barely makes sense. I'd much rather use Hamilton to get someone like Panarin or Stone. I think Dougie holds a lot of value.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Vanderm</b></div><div>That BUF deal is a conversation starter for sure, but I think the Flames end up having to add to get it done. Brodie + Bennett + a prospect is definitely close though.
Hoffman deal is a tougher one to understand value on with the recent news. I think GMs are going to wait a little while to see what transpires in the media and make Dorion sweat a bit longer before trying to add the player to their dressing room.
+ If CGY ever got O'Reilly, you can be very, very, very sure that he will be playing center. He's the best faceoff man in the league by a good margin. He's taken more draws than anyone over the past 3 seasons and still has a 58% win percentage. Better than Bergeron on both metrics...that's the most elite of the elite on draws. Jankowski isn't pushing him out of the circle.
With the trades you've made, I think the lineup would be:
Gaudreau / Monahan / Hoffman
Tkachuk / O'Reilly / Foo
Bennett / Backlund / Frolik
*depth guy* / Jankowski / Shore
*Mangiapane, Dube, Lomberg</div></div>
Not ready to give up on Bennett yet and I think the Flames have the pieces to get the deal done without him being included. Ferland was more effective than Bennett last year and brings a lot to a team, while Brodie could use a change of scenery (and the opportunity to play on the right side again). Taking on Scandella's contract is part of the deal as well. If needed, a pick / prospect could be included (not one of the D prospects though or Dube / Parsons).
I totally agree on the ROR center comment. I actually make that point in the details section, that Him and Janko would be interchangable, with Janko even sliding down and Bennett coming up as a possibility. I like the options that having ROR creates for Peter's and would definitely make him a target this off-season if I was Tre.

I highly doubt Hoffman is going to be given away for a bottom pair defender and a 13th forward.</div></div>
For the O'Reilly deal, I can see where you are coming from, since ROR is a great player. Scandella is added as a cap dump for BUF (so assuming neutral to negative value for him). I think Brodie and Ferland are close in terms of value, but there might need to be a bit of an add from Calgary.
For Hoffman, I actually think given the current environment this is pretty decent. In fact I'm hesitant as a Flames fan to pull the trigger. Will be interesting to see how it plays out - no matter what happens though it's a very unfortunate situation for the Karlsson's.

Final Touches
I like it. I am liking that people are putting Janko on a line with Backs and Frolik and having Matty and Sam together. Not sure I'm sold on Vrbata, but he's better than Brouwer. Unfortunately I don't think there are too many teams out there willing to take him off our hands, and I'm not sure we'd get a 2nd for him if they did. I think it more likely that Ferland plays 1st RW again and that Brouwer slots next to Sam and Matty to start. Might also see Stone re-signed at #5, which would mean a battle between Kulak, Bartkowski and Andersson for that last 2 spots. Also think Rittich might be ahead of Gillies right now so that Gillies gets plenty of playing time in the A.

3 scoring lines
Roughly the value I think Elliott will get (probably closer to 4M). Stone may not take a pay cut, but probably isn't expecting much of a raise - as he also wants to be in Calgary. Oshie for that deal would be a steal, but I think the Flames might have to over pay a little to get him to come here - less than what Gio/Gaud make though as that is the team cap. Why buyout Bouma if you can bury him on the 4th line/pressbox and don't need the Cap space?
I think there will be better options for a back-up than Lack.
