There are 154 forwards with as many points as him this year and 96 who have as many points since the start of last year.
Even if ypu go back another year to his best career year hes outside the top 20.
So for a guy who plays 0 defense he hasnt been worth it.
Money is well spent elsewhere</div></div>
I mean theres a lot of guys with like 3 years left on their deal who'll make more especially with the cap increasing. Draistatl, Petterson, Robertson, Matthews, Kaprizov, Nylander off the top of my head. Sure money can be spent better elsewhere but for now its the equivalent of Anderson and Gallagher who are producing at the same pace of a 60pts Huberdeau at worst (90 at best), but combined. And those guys mentionned would cost a lot more to acquire in terms of assets. Idk I just dont think it would be as bad as you make it seem.

Played excellent, what im I reading. He has fallen off a cliff for 3 years, has brick hands and can barely skate. Always gassed and can only contribute on the PK. Who woukd you target instead then, cause this core isnt winning anything. Not saying Huberdeau is the answer either.

If they buy out gallagher this offseason thats still 60 million cheaper than huberdeau over the life of his deal in cap.
You dont trade one overpaid player for a nuclear bomb of a bad contract.</div></div>
Do you ever watch habs game? Gallagher has been brutal for 3+ years now, i dont care about his underlying numbers. He is completely cooked.
Huberdeau has put up 61pts in 55 games before his 115 pts season, 78 in 69 the year before and 92 in 82 before that. How in the world are the odds of him bouncing back are essentially 0. You dont provide any argument to back that statement.
Im trading Gallagher for Huberdeau all day.

I dont see whats so definitive about the "miniscule" chance of a bounce back or a "career dip trajectory". He had one bad season, its not like he has career threatening injuries. Plenty of elite players have had disappointing seasons and bounced back.

His career high in goals is 30 so hes not a prolific goal scorer (something teams actually pay for).
People care if your a defensive liability when ypu dont produce. This is now the 2nd coach he has been terrible under.
He is the exact profile of the kind of guy you dont make that big money long term profile on. Nobody is tpughing that time bomb withput significant retention.</div></div>
So youre just gonna ignore 85 assists in a season... 2nd coach hes been terrible under for 10 games. And I honestly think playing for MSL would do wonders for him. Look at Caufield under Ducharme VS under St-Louis.
I guess youre only as good as your last season. Which is crazy imo.
People on here seem to also forget that the salary cap will increase year after year. And that we have a non NHLer (Gally) getting 6.5M$ for another 4 years.

"Hughes' plan is generally known: the progression of young players, expanding from within in short, and <strong>patience, a lot of patience</strong>, which has the gift of annoying more than one... . "The problem with free agents is that they are often 27, 28, 29 years old. Normally, the value of these contracts is at the beginning, not at the end. To go and get this type of player to help us , <strong>we have to believe that we are closer</strong>. Because otherwise, when we are ready, they will no longer be ready, he explained."
Reading in this that KH will go out of his way to get a 30 y.o. 8 years contract for a short playoffs run is complete nonsense.</div></div>
Like you said he has a 8 year contract so it wouldnt be for a short playoff run. Like I said, the playoff run would be a nice build up for next year (when Hutson, Reinbacher, Roy, maybe Farrell get a spot) and the year after. And like Hughes said, "we have to believe we're closer", which is exactly what a playoff spot in the atlantic division after 2 years of rebuild would be.
Maybe we should just go after reclamation projects like Dach and Newhook, but for now Dach is injury prone and Newhook doesnt look like he'll be a ppg player, which you need to be a contender. Huberdeau was literally a Hart nominee a year and a half ago. If its nonsense, you really think sticking with this core without taking risks is the way to go? What would you do instead, if we actually are in a playoff spot in march?

What? Hes been a ppg+ player for 5 years before going to Daryl Sutter jail. No one cares about defensive liability when youre role is to produce offense. Half retention on 10.5 is completely unrealistic, im trying to have a real discussion here.

Wouldnt go this far, not sure about the value but imo itd be cap dump for cap dump (ex. Gallagher) and a little extra where we get the higher upside and CGY gets to have the cap relief sooner. We're in a good spot cap wise compared to other teams who could be interested in Huby so the leverage could be interesting.

Rebuilding takes years. Sit down and wait.</div></div>
If huberdeau keeps up like last year he definitely is a cap dump.
This isnt chel where 30 year olds are on the brink of retirement.
And I did say its unlikely were in a playoff spot by march, but what if we are? I dont think Hughes or MSL or the players would agree with you at all. This article proves it.
https://ici.radio-canada.ca/sports/2016795/canadien-montreal-kent-hughes-debut-saison-talent-pointe
All im saying is situation change quicker than you think, most teams have a completely different roster in a span of 3 years so I dont see how you think the rebuild will take 4-5 more years.

Hes overpaid but a 20 goal scorer / 40pts is not worth 1.5. And wahlstrom is ass + 3M$ retention for 4 years isnt worth it unless you get a 1st. Have you ever actually played hockey cause youd know a players contribution isnt only what he does with the puck. 0 puck knowledge.

Learn how cap space work, you dont pay a players full salary with 20 games left to the season. Idc about next year the devils can win the cup now and nemec in the ahl doesnt help that
