<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Affectionate_Side_64</b></div><div>This would only be for 3 years, and if you choose to keep you'd have 5.1 mil against the cap instead of 2 mil against the cap, two 3rds and a 5th. The reason for retaining is to get more value back, and you will need that cap near the end of his tenure. He does not fit your window and you are rebuilding, it makes sense to get whatever you can for the assets that don't fit your window. Darts on the draft board and clear the salary of players that don't fit your window of contention are exactly what rebuilding/retooling teams look for, and you've already started on that path by trading Provorov and Hayes. You can debate the value, but the logic is clear.</div></div>

The logic that the Flyers should accumulate draft capital is clear, but this trade doesn't line up with the most efficient method to do so. Rebuilding teams should maximize their chances to draft franchise caliber players (i.e top-10 draft picks) either through selling current roster players at full cost who do not fit the timeline or leveraging cap space. This trade does neither: the Flyers trade a player, who has improved his play under the new coaching staff, is not currently blocking any prospects, and would rather chance that he develops into the player they want him to over the additional dart throws, as well as lock up their 2nd retained salary spot until 2026-27 for draft picks that have a very slim chance of becoming a regular NHL-player, let along an impact player.

If teams want Ristolainen, they can have him at his full cap hit. If not, the Flyers are better to keep him. Provorov yielded a 1st, (2) 2nds, and a prospect. Hayes was blocking additional young players and the value of having those prospects in the lineup outweighs the cost of his dead cap hit + usage of a RS spot.

Marginal benefit &lt; Marginal cost, do not execute the trade.
