OK good to know! Maybe I will adjust to just a 2nd or 3rd then

Habs without Weber and Drouin options - Makar Martinez Tarasenko and Coleman
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Fran615</b></div><div>To be honest, I also believe COL will match that offer sheet in a second. However, this is Fantasy GM, so it's just to play around. In that vein, I would have offered a 7 year contract at 10.25. They would match of course, but this is for fun.
Tarasenko trade; again, I don't think it's too ridiculous as a trade proposal, since Tarasenko WANTS out of STL. And he is getting older and banged up.</div></div>
Unfortunately Offer sheet annual average (AAV) is calculated by dividing the contract value by the lower of: 1. The contract length, or 2. Five years. So 7 years would mean a higher cap hit.

as noted, I do think they will match anything. But they will be in tough with signing Landeskog ($8mill) and Grubauer ($7mill), so it will be tight with Makar there on a big contract, especially with Mackinnon up soon too.

Habs with some changes - Tarasenko Jost Getlzaf and Killorn
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>TheBoyDuddus</b></div><div>Contribution is secondary to contract with a flat cap. Tyler Johnson just won back to back cups and has been a productive top 9 player yet he clears waivers every year because the salary and term of his contract are too bloated for anyone to take on relative to his production. Johnson is considerably better than Byron but will likely have to pay a 1st+ to get someone to take him on.
The fact that Byron may be better than Paquette and Coburn is irrelevant because he would struggle to crack Ottawa’s lineup. He’s also signed to the same money that those two made TOGETHER and he’s signed for TWO more years when those two only had one year left. You can’t call someone who averaged 12mins/game a 3rd line forward. That’s an astronomical reach. He didn’t even play on the habs 3rd line.
When he hasn’t been scratched, each of the last two years his production hasn’t even averaged out to 30 points over a full 82 games. It’s not nitpicking. No one wants him on that contract as evidenced by him clearing waivers. You’re going to have to pay more than a 3rd and if you don’t want to then you’re just going to end up stuck with him 🤷🏽♂️
Feel free to bookmark this and throw it in my face if by some miracle the habs can move him. But I promise you Ottawa won’t be taking him for a 3rd and no one else will either.</div></div>
I laugh at your 'promise' like you are at all in the know about front-office happenings or thought process. But this is the fun of being arm-chair GM's like all of us on here.

Paquette and Coburn were no more or less useful than Byron. The salary cap is still flat. No reason for the price to go down. Ottawa’s not going to do you a favour because the player’s local. If they’re acquiring a vet it’ll be because they can play.
No ones going to do you any favours. No point agreeing to disagree when you just need to get real 😬</div></div>
Byron is better than both those guys and a third is fine. you are nitpicking. Byron is a 3rd/4th liner. Many guys were put on waivers last year because of their contracts. it doesn't mean they can't contribute.

No one wants Paul Byron. That's why he cleared waivers. No one cares that he's local either. He's a 4th line player at best and sitting in the press box at worst. If you want someone to take on the ridiculous contract for a borderline 4th/5th line player then it STARTS with a 2nd. He has two years left at 3.4m so you'll have to add something else for that second year as well. If not them you can keep him bloated contract.</div></div>
agree to disagree. But you just enjoy the hiring of Pierre Mcguire and the continual disaster that is/will be the Ottawa Senators :grimace

Yes. He has been a shutdown Centre these playoffs, but still has only 3 points in 17 games. He is a third line Centre on a good team. No team will be paying him $6mill a year. he is maybe worth $5mill. $4.5 seems fair.

Habs 2021-22 w Jones
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>JP_knows_it_all</b></div><div>I was pointing out the fact that in his projection, there wasn't any "provision", cap wise, for the salary increase of those 3 players.
I'm ok with what you're saying. I'm not foreshadowing a huge contract for Romanov, even with a great season next year. I'd say a 2x2.25-2.5 would be realistic, if he continue to develop.
For Jones, since he's willing to test the market, I doubt he'll settle for less than his true worth, which is between 8.25 & 9.25 AAV on a 7 years deal.
#14, now : I've seen enough of the kid and what he's capable of that I would throw max term right now! I mean, summer 2021, not after his ELC ends in 2022. Sign him NOW for max term and get yourself a HUGE bargain deal for the years 4 through 8 (maybe even starting year 3). GM'S have to take risks and that Suzuki kid is totally worth it.</div></div>
Appreciate the convo and the feedback and agree about some creativity needed moving into future years. This is also keeping Drouin on the roster, when who even knows if he will be in the NHL next year, or on the Habs roster.
Heading into 22-23, the Habs have $12,078,691 in projected cap space. Assuming Jones signs for 7 x $9 million, Suzuki signs for 3 x $4.5 and Romanov signed for 2 x $2.5. As noted by others, I could see Weber retiring after next season when his salary goes down to $3 million and he will be 37. And its possible the cap increases for 22-23. None of these contracts would put Montreal in cap-hell. They would have to make some moves, but to get Seth Jones on your top-pair, a puck-moving dman who they need, it would be worth it IMO.

What has KK done to earn more? And in a flat cap world Lehkonen scoring 10 goals a year ain’t getting more than his last deal. Hamilton would also be a UFA again and could cash in at 31.

imo Struble is a better prospect than Mete and wont have to be protected in the expansion draft, which Mete would. And Nash is already protecting Ellis, Josi and Fabbro, so I imagine they would want someone they don't need to protect. I think any of the above makes sense too.

I disagree. Killorn is a 30 goal scorer and Armia has never scored 20. Killorn is good insurance when Tatar leaves after this season or gets traded. And I am confused how 4,455,000 for a 30-goal scorer is not good value?
