It is nearly impossible to have a debate with you because you don't care about stats or anything logical that goes into a debate. What <a href="/users/vmark" target="_blank">@vmark</a> said about not having DeSmith last year and they don't make playoffs, is 100 percent accurate. DeSmith has put "Murray like" numbers up in the NHL (obbviously in a smaller portion) and is reliable as a backup - Jarry is not reliable at this point in time therefore is the goalie that is expendable. Paying a backup 1.25 is not overpaying. If they didn't want him, they would have waited until this summer and let him walk. They made up their mind as to who they wanted as their backup, and it isn't Jarry.

As for your solution of just sending guys to the minors to clear cap space - this is not the way you run a team and clear space. In order to move a bad contract (Johnson) they will need to give a team an incentive (Rust/Bjugs/Jarry) to take it. If it was easy to get rid of, it would have been done already.

The only reason DeSmith was the backup last year and not Jarry is they wanted jarry to play more in WBS. Jarry is the better goal tender.

You don't care about stats ... lol okay then. So they probably signed DeSmith to a 3yr deal paying him 1.25mil cus they don't want him to play. Great logic.

DeSmith might be good enough to lose by 1 but Jarry isn't even good enough to have the chance to lose by 1.

no it's not. None of this is even remotely true.
They can Bury both JJ and Desmith, and clear enough space to pay ZAR 1.2 mil a year, and Pettersson 1.8 mil per.
Both fair offers on both players. ZAR will not get more than 1.2 in his hearing.
They don't need to trade anyone. They are totally cap compliant.</div></div>

There is no way DeSmith clears waivers, so why would you be willing to lose a reliable backup for nothing? They most certainly need to make a trade, not to mention they will have 9 D on the main roster with Pettersson signed. There is no way to make it work WITHOUT a trade.

OP - I think they will be moving Rust &amp; Johnson. I don't like the idea of moving Rust but they made him expendable with the Tanev signing and he will be a sweetner in a Johnson deal. I would also be content with trading away ZAR's rights with moving Johnson and keeping Rusty. That would give them 4 very good lines.

Simon is one of the most reliable and defensive minded forwards on the team, not sure how you could say otherwise. And not worth the skates he's on? You are suggesting they pay Lindberg over 3 million to do less than Simon does at 750K ... I am not understanding your logic. I don't think trading Kessel is a huge mistake, he can't do anything 5v5 and is absolutely brutal on his off-wing on the PP. I think his numbers only go down from here and if he can be moved to get rid of Johnson and get a decent return (a young guy, few picks), it will clear up space to allow Rutherford to go after a dangerous winger for Gino and put Kahun on his right side. They now have many wingers that they can rotate in and out of the top 6 to find the right fit but one more elite winger is needed.

Yeah 3rd/4th line is the bottom 6 but we are not saying the same thing. Paying 3 million for a 4th line defensive winger when you already have one at 750K that you chose to scratch instead is poor use of what little cap space is available. As of right now they don't have a whole lot of cap space but I think Rutherford is 1 trade away from dumping a bad contract (Johnson) and maybe losing one of Kessel/Hornqvist but having that available cap to make a splash in FA to get a LW for Gino.

I appreciate the detailed response with intelligence behind it. I would say Maatta + Angello (or a better prospect) would be fair value for Montour but like you said, they may not be ready to call it in just yet. I am basically going off rumours and seeing if I can make something of it myself.
