If you're going back to the 90s to fill out your D core there is a whole group of players you could add like Thornton, Lecavalier, Lindros, Kovalchuk... And yeah, not having Stamkos in that group is pretty criminal.

I'd hate to see Formenton go, but Dorion likely doesn't hang up when Buffalo calls with the offer. Though I will point out that Buffalo may (will) be disappointed if they're expecting White to play top-line minutes (and produce).

I'd love to see Bear here in Ottawa, but I think it would take more than absorbing some bad contracts to get him here. I like RNH but I don't want to be the team that gives him that term and dollars because that contract could become an albatross when we need to sign our young guns to new contracts. Though I'm sure he will get term and money from someone.

I'd argue Mavrik Bourque is an interesting piece, but he's not interesting enough to warrant giving up a guy who scored at a 50 point pace in his first full NHL season. Tufte and Honka are of no interest or use to the Sens. Dorion hangs up the phone and doesn't call back.

While Matheson's contract is bad, it doesn't make up for the difference in value between the 2 sides of the deal. Ottawa is getting the two best players in the trade.

I think Krejci could be a good fit for the Sens, but I doubt he accepts a 1 year $5m contract, from anyone. He just finished a contract paying him $7.25m/year and is still producing well. He will get dollar and term despite being 35.

None of the deals make any sense. Also, why is Seattle getting 3 players through expansion? And Abramov just signed in the KHL for 2 years so he's out of the NHL until at least 2023.

Logan Brown is getting a qualifying offer and will be exposed to Seattle
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensonfire</b></div><div>In case you were wondering, this is who I think is going to be protected amongst Ottawa's forwards if nothing else changes:
Brady Tkachuk
Drake Batherson

Nick Paul
Chris Tierney
Amongst the forwards that could be exposed ...
Tierney, Dzingel, Abramov, Logan Brown and Austin Watson are of any significance to the team IMO.
</div></div>
I get this and if it were possible it would be great, but that leaves Ottawa one short of the exposure requirements. They need 2 forwards that are under contract for next season and have played 54 games this season or 27 games this season exposed. With your protected list they only have one in Watson (who I would actually protect ahead of Tierney). Unless they get Amadio under contract before the expansion draft (and leave him exposed) or make a trade for another qualified forward, two of the following forwards MUST be exposed:
Dadonov
White
C. Brown
Tierney
Watson
Paul
Your list only has one exposed.
If you want to protect Tierney someone else from this list needs to be left exposed.

I think those declining from a TB standpoint are undervaluing Batherson, Zuband Gustavsson.
Batherson scored at a 50 point pace in his first full season in the NHL, while Cirelli regressed scoring at a 35 point pace. To me, I don't see Cirelli as any better than Colin White right now and would play behind Norris and maybe even Pinto who really impressed in his short time at the NHL.
Zub is the type of dman Ottawa needs more of. Strong defensively, makes the right decision way more often than not and solidifies any pairing he's on. He turned Reilly (who was picked up for a 5th) into a guy who was traded for a 3rd at the deadline. I think the world of Sergachev but with Chabot, and to a much lesser extent Brannstrom and Mete we don't need more offensive defencemen.
To top it off Gustavsson is likely the goalie Ottawa protects in the expansion draft, that's how high they regard him.
I don't think Ottawa would need to think long and hard about this trade as it doesn't fill their needs, even if the value is close.

So, we might need a rain check :(
Does Chris Tierney intrigue you by any chance? :)</div></div>
I don't see L. Brown affecting whether Tierney is protected. Unless another qualified forward is singed before the expansion draft 2 of Dadonov, White, C. Brown, Tierney, Watson, and Paul need to be exposed. I think Tierney is an obvious choice among that group and then it comes down to preference. My initial thought for the other was Watson, but they may want to see if Seattle would take Dadonov's contract off their hands.

Simple but Effective
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Mediumyeet</b></div><div>Bottom 4 guys listed won't be in the NHL (abramov maybe) Paul has played C the past 2 seasons. Roussell is good veteran depth and a leader that can play RW as well and Gadjovich is a youngish power forward that can add some grit. There's no risk except for the 3m cap space and he is only owed 1.9m real cash. Good guy to have around the community and young guys for a year especially being bilingual.</div></div>
The bottom 4 guys are slated for the AHL next season (Abramov could make it as the 13F), but the top 4 are who I expect to be the LWs for the Sens next season. Paul has consistently been a winger for Ottawa. Does he take more draws than most wingers yes, but he is still primarily a LW. Even if we sent Roussel to the AHL I'd still recall any of the 4 in the AHL before Roussel. I guarantee you there is no interest from PD.

Can I ask why Vancouver fans think Ottawa would be interested in taking on Roussel and his contract?
Our LW depth is:
Tkachuk
Stützle
Formenton
Paul
Abramov
Crookshank
Järventie
Kelly
All of which I would play above Roussel in both the NHL and AHL. There is really nowhere for him and that $3m next season makes it a no-go unless you give us a good asset.

Fair enough. I just don't see how the sens get better on the back end until we replace Zaitsev. Manson from ANA is the other possibility I would be targeting if I were Dorion, but he would cost assets, whereas we can sign Larsson for free.

How many players will want to sign a contract just to be left exposed in the expansion draft?

Next Steps
A few points:
1) I'm assuming JBD will be on the big club next year meaning there isn't a need to sign KoekkoeK and puts J. Brown as the 7th Dman.
2) If Ottawa could swing that trade with Calgary that would be awesome. White has effectively been pushed out of the Sens' top 6 plans by Norris and Pinto and having a 4.75m AAV player on the third line isn't good for the internal budget. Ours and their first will be pretty similar so I'm not sure there's a need to swap picks.
3) Nyquist isn't a big enough of an upgrade on Dadonov to warrant adding L. Brown. I'm not opposed to trading for Nyquist, I just think the value is off. Also, I may be the last Sens fan who is still holding out hope that Brown will be able to put it together and become the NHL player we all thought he could be.
4) I also think there's a better chance that Ottawa loses Daccord or Gustavsson (whomever they leave unprotected) than Tierney or J. Brown.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>sensibleguy</b></div><div>Zaitsev doesn’t have to be great, he played 22:44 a night against the other teams best players, and did it well enough. He earned his money. If you want to argue he’s overpriced, consider what other defenders with his minutes and QoC earn. Zub was 3rd (defence) on the team at 18:23 per game.
As for Murray, toss out January, for everyone, and from February on, Murray played in 20 games. The team was destroyed in four of those games, but in the other 16 games, Murray had a 1.90 GAA and .937 Sv%, and that’s enough to give your team a chance to win.</div></div>
Yeah, I would throw out all the stats before February 13th. No goalie could succeed in front of a team that was playing as poorly as the Sens were over those first 15 games. And when he was healthy toward the end of the season and the Sens were playing well he looked really comfortable and had 2 shutouts.

Let's be honest here, a 75 point C would be in the top 30 scoring for Centers, so not really a "2C", but I don't see that upside in Chytil's game. You're probably right about him being a middle 6 center, which makes him less valuable Norris who is already a top 6 C and showed he could be a legitimate Bergeron-esque #1 once he develops. As someone else pointed out, unless it's in a package to get a better C back Ottawa isn't trading Norris.
