Creating a Dynasty
Obviously, the hand pass controversy was big, BUT what about:
1. Obvious puck over glass missed.
2. Head shot against Braun missed.
3. Nasty slash on Haley's wrist missed.
4. Bouwmeester actually clearly trips Meier seconds before the goal. missed.
There were a minimum of four no doubt penalties against the blues that should have been called. We cannot look at one big call that went the sharks way without ignoring 4 blatant missed calls that went against them.

Why be mad at the sharks?
Mad at refs? Sure. Bad calls arent the sharks' fault. Pavs wasnt flopping. the offside was reviewed and decided by the league, no the sharks. hand passes happen all the time, and the refs are supposed to catch it.
I totally get the anger at the refs. I totally do not get anger at the sharks.
There is no bribery. no conspiracy. no backroom deals. Just some bad mistakes.
Still there was a head shot on bruan missed and a no doubt puck over glass missed. Refs missed a bunch.

kane is 27, but I hear you. Personally, I really wouldnt care who takes those guys as long as the return is a cheaper (sub 2M) top 9 forward.
maybe same deal for Blake Coleman from NJD. NJD has tons of space, will get Hughes, and will be looking to compete next year, I think. This deal vaults them into a contender next year.
maybe the NYI targeting cizikas as they could use some offensive pop too.
I dont care how dougie does it as long as he accomplishes the following:
1. resign karlsson
2. Keep pavs, meier, labanc.
3. sign Panarin.
I like the sharks forward prospects coming up. I want to add proven Playoff guys who are consistent performers while ditching guys like Kane who disappear for long stretches and play their worst when it matters most and dont work hard every shift. To me, kane is by far the most disappointing player this year (1 goal in the last 15 games!! minus player in 9 of them). Last year, vs. vegas he had 1 pt, -5 in five games. Yes, he was injured, but he sucked in his own end as much as he sucked offensively. He is repeating that same performance this year. The sharks cannot afford having a defensive liability in the top 6.
Panarin is the exact opposite. He was the jackets' best playoff player. He dominated tampa and went point per game vs. boston. He is a point per game playoff player and while a moderate minus, he has not been on good teams like Kane is. e has been asked to carry his team, so on a team already stacked with hertl, meier, cooch etc panarin would just be another super weapon who is also solid defensively (he's been dougle digit plus each of the last three years, +63 in his career and that's with a thin blue jackets team. How big would his plus be with the sharks???)

Sharks repeat the cup
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>vmach</b></div><div>Timo $4MM - LOLs</div></div>
This is not that far off. I think 2 years, 5M per. Remember Meier is not a UFA. Dougie does 2 year bridges with his ELC expiriing players. He'll likely do two years with Meier and Labanc. I think the bancer number is very close too. Meier will not get 6M+ on a bridge deal. Thats not how it works. Besides, he has had exactly one big year. Remember William karlsson's big year last year (43 goals, 78 pts, +49)? He followed that with just 24 goals, 56 pts, and +1.
If Vegas takes the one big year and gives him 5 years, 50M based on that one year, they might regret it since he followed that with a year more in line with 6M per. Meier had one big year, a 2 year 8-10M deal makes sense. Then, if he puts together two more 30+ goal, 70+ pt seasons, then you give him the big $$ and term.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>Templar87</b></div><div>Rob Blake is not Pierre Dorion. (Even though he barely dodged a deadly bullet in the Pacioretty trade) Unlike Sens and Melnyk, the LAK are not desperately trying to get rid of Doughty, especially after Drew signed that 8 years contract with <strong>a full NMC</strong>. Besides, that package is not close to the value of Doughty. In fact, that package has less value than what Ottawa got from trading Erik Karlsson. The Sharks would have to give up more than that. It starts with <strong>at least</strong>..
- the 2021 1st round pick
- Ryan Merkley
- probably another top prospect</div></div>
Id rather make your deal. Personally, I think Merkley is a likely bust. Not nearly good enough defensively: small, too irresponsible, canot handle the cycle game and makes overly offensive risky reads. He is young and may well round out, but he gets beat regularly by OHL forwards, so NHL forwards will eat him for breakfast.
a 2021 1st (which the sharks may not have anyways) is likely a 20-30th pick that may make the NHL in 2024. Both of these options are worth way less than labanc, a 50-60 pt, 23 year old or Kane. I would love your deal...
Of course, you are right that LA is not going to move doughty. This post was just for fun. No way they trade doughty to their arch rivals.

Absolutely. have one or two older vets is ntoa bad thing. LA has all old guys in kopitar, carter, kovy, Brown, etc. They have zero bna fide top 6 forwards under 30. Even my roster has meier and hertl in that category.
I think the ovation last night should tell you all you need to know about resigning pavs. He is the heart and soul of the team, and you cannot let him walk. Not to mention, his style of game which is based on tipping pucks and body positioning wont decay with age at the same pace as a guy like carter whose game is based on speed.
Resigning pavs to lifetime contract is a total no brainer....

Also, if you're giving Pavelski 5 years, I think it's fair to say the cap hit will be lower, maybe 6M or 6.5M . I can see it being around 7M for 2 or 3 years though.
I see Braun having positive value @ 3.8M but i dont think you're getting a package of picks like that with Dell or Melker, who may have negative value on their current deals. I hope I'm wrong, Doug Wilson pulled off magic last season with the whole Boedker -> Hoffman -> picks deal, maybe he can do it again.</div></div>
He could dump melker for a late round pick. and Dell too I think. Neither would land much more than a 5th-7th rounder, but I think there is a market for them. I also think a vet like braun can get at least a 2nd, maybe even a late 1st. Braun is a very desireable add for any team, and dillon would be too. Definitely high value for either.
As for the realism of the doughty trade, it's not. at all. I know that :-) Its just for fun...
I am a firm believer of building a winner from the net out. I also a firm believer of needing just 4 top D in the playoffs. Right now, the sharks have 3 top D. One more and they would be truly set.
They also have a very rich farm up front. Chmelevski is rocking it, 2nd in the OHL in playoff points, and was #1 star for team USA in the gold medal game. Chekhovich looked NHL ready during the preseason last year. He'll be ready this year for sure, whether he makes the team or not. We'll see what blichfeld can do as the #2 scorer in all the CHL, and Noah gregor is 3rd in WHL playoff scoring and had a very strong year. Alex true has the size to play an NHL game and really emerged this year. Gambrell hasnt quite found that spot yet, but he seems to be getting close. Even Francis Perron looked pretty good before his head injury. And, of course, every year, dougie seems to find some junior or Euro FA that steps in and makes an impact (marcus sorenson, melker karlsson, joonas donskoi, barclay goodrow, Tim Heed, lukas radil, etc etc etc... all undrafted FA signings). Its also much easier to acquire forward talent throughout the season. Looks at the players that moved at the deadline: Stone, Duchene, Dzingel, Nyqist, Hayes, Zuccarello, Coyle, hagelin... All top 9 forwards. The only top 4 D who moved near the deadline was Muzzin. All others like del zotto, lovejoy, etc ar much more depth Dmen.
As such, solidifying the D through the next 6 years allows the sharks to focus on developing their young forwards and acquiring at the deadline as needed....

Why not? I think it's a very competitive offer. LA gets a solid replacement in his prime who can eat 20 mins/night no problem. They have a seriously problem up front with just older Kopitar, Kovalchuk, brown etc. They have a serious dearth of prime age top 6 forwards. kane and Labanc add two 50-60 pt players, in their primes at reasonable cap hits. I don't see LA getting a whole lot more than a middle pair Dman, and two top 6 forwards in their primes for doughty.
I dont think this could actually happen because SJ won't trade with LA, but I think the price is very reasonable.

I hink a 2nd for dilly and a 2nd for braun are very much in line.
The issue I have is exactly that beard said: Pavs. Losing him would be devastating. In their entire history, the sharks have never had a bona fide, fully loved, and unquestioned captain like him. Own Nolan was passionate, but alot of the locker room hated him. Captain blinky was mercurial. Jumbo was just not enough. But pavs is the heart and soul of the team. Look at what he did last round and how the team responded when he went down. Look at the quotes about winning long enough just so pavs can come back. Locker room glue is incredibly underrated (see Bunch of Jerks), and pavs is that glue. He is worth whatever it takes even if he only goes for 20 goals and 50 points on the ice.
Brindamour wasnt that great when they won in carolina, but they won it for him. Dave Andreychuck was the same for tampa. For the sharks, Pavs is the key (and jumbo second).

The wings needed to move him and SJ is the best destination possible. Top contender for the cup. Great team culture. supportive and kind management. sunny and warm :-)
Getting the chance to be traded to the sharks is a score for GN. Its either that or upset the wings by not waiving and screwing them out of the return they want for him. That creates a pretty terrible relationship with him and the team, and he hasnt earned the franchise tag to do that.

the other nice thing for the sharks is that all this renting (EK65 and Nyquist) gives them many avenues going forward. If EK65 does not stay, they have other good talent in the org with exclusive bargaining rights until july 1. Dougie is extremely good as resigning internal talent. He may end up keeping nyquist this summer if EK walks.
Completely loaded up for this year and lots of options this summer. Dougie has himself in a very strong position. Lots of pressure on scouts to figure out the future (signing euro FA's, Jr FA's, late draft picks, etc) with so few good picks for the next several years, but that's never really been a problem before.

Its very much in line with what I figured...
Detroit didnt need Melker. Gregor could have gone, but it wasnt just a second, and glendening wasnt part of the trade.
Im not sure if you are trying to toot your own horn, or just asking for opinion. If trying to toot your own horn, you might look at your proposed trade and realize that yours was nothing close to the real thing except that it included nyquist and a 2nd.
If looking for opinions: I think the sharks did extremely well! Getting Nyquist for a couple 2nds (or a 2 and a 3) is awesome, particualrly since boyle went for a 2nd and Nyquist >>> Boyle. However, when Duchene went for a 1st and a couple lower prospects (and a conditional 1) the market was set low. Then Dzingel goes for two 2nds, and it was clear that 1st rounders were not getting thrown around this year. Stone will get one and then some, and hayes might too, but the buyer list is shorter this year than the seller list, and the prices are lower than usual. Dougie took advantage of a favoriable market, and get a very good player for a pretty low price...

I think a realistic deal would be 50% retained Mojo and a mid-to-late-round pick for a 2nd and one B level prospect.
IMO, SJ has to go all in. The reason, I think EK moves on in FA and does not resign with the Sharks and I think SJ's window is closing honestly.</div></div>
I think they kind of are all in. They went all in when they acquired karlsson. Spending even more on guaranteed rentals doesnt necessarily even increase your chance of winning as chemistry is as important as talent. The chemistry is prtty awesome now, so acquiring a top 6 forward is likely wasted resources.
I complete disagree about the closing window, regardless of whether EK 65 stays or goes. The sharks just won 6 in a row without him, marching through the top two teams in the west in their buildings. They have a nice mix of youth and vets. Next year, pavs will be the only past-prime forward (or jumbo), with all other forwards 30 or younger including the two dominant players in meier and hertl at 25 or less.
The D is aging some, but simek, ryan and dillon are sub-30. Vlasic will be 32, which is not young, but not exaclty old. Burns will be 34, but he is showing no signs of a decline, so even if he goes down some, he'll still be pretty good. And they'd have ample money if EK65 doesnt resign to go after a quality player in the offseason.
Dont get me wrong, I want Ek to stay, but I dont see this whole 'closing window' thing. If they fail this year, and EK 65 leaves, they will still have a very good team with Pavs (if/when he resigns), cooch, kane, hertl, meier, donkey (if he resigns), labanc, sorensen, and several very promising rookies. Their D is still good with Burns, Vlasic, Braun, Dillon, Simek, Ryan. It's not a dominant D, but still pretty good.

Johansson is an interesting target to center the 3rd line. I would love to bump jumbo to line 4, and separate the two worst defensive forwards (labanc and jumbo) on the team. Problem is that I dont know johansson's defensive acumen well enough. Whoever takes over the 3rd line must be top notch in their own zone. Johansson's big minuses the last two years scare me there (Tied for the worst forward this year and 3rd worst last year). also ryan, gregor, and a 2nd is an overpay. the 2nd alone should take care of it. I dont think 7x14 is likely. His injury history makes that too risky for any GM as last year he missed 11 games and had surgery. This year, he's missed 10 games already and he isnt getting any younger. Further, while he is obviously an elite player, he is not a completely dominant generational player like Orr, Lidstrom, or the like. He doesnt look like a HOFer just yet, and he's a career -31. 8 yrs 11-12 is dead on. Personally, I think it will be closer to 12 to give him the highest salary of any Dman in the league, but 14 is wholly unlikely. I don't think there are any GM's out there who would throw that kind of $ and term at him even if he was willing to go.

1. Pavs is gunna score 40. Hes not getting 5M unless its for an 8 year extension :-). to keep it under 7 would require 5+ years, otherwise is 3x7M or more.
2. Donkey at 4M is an overpay. He wont get that kind of money. he's about 20-20 guy and will exceed 40 pts most likely just this year. 3x3 makes more sense there.
3. bancer for 2x2 is likely a little low. 1 yr 2M maybe, but if it stretches beyond one will need to be closer to 3M. He'll likely sign a 'show me' contract like tierney's 1 yr deal. 1 yr 2M. then if he has a big year, it would be longer term and $$$.
4. Edler is a strange call. 33 years old and getting 4.5 for 4 years? They have enough again DMen, not sure they need another 33 year old one with injury questions.
5. Trading vlasic is interesting. I admit I've thought about this too, but I aslo wonder if he'd waive the NTC and whether they are better off moving him. Saves alot of money, but Pickles is a very solid player.
6. Not sure labanc over Kreider is enough of an upgrade to warrant the deal. Kreider is better, but bancer is much younger and seems to have a higher ceiling. its interesting, and I like the size addition, but not sure...
7. Sorensen already signed 2 yrs, 1.5M per.
8. The one piece I think its clearly right on is moving braun. He still has a good value, but his 3.8M doesnt fit. Neither does MK68, and maybe neither does dell's 1.9. Drop those three and they save nearly 8M on the cap without losing particularly impactful players.

its a competitive offer for Panarin. CLB gets two quality roster players for this year's playoffs and beyond, including a vet Dman and a replacement top 9 forward. Labanc is up to a 50pt pace, so any offer that includes labanc for any rental is one that any other GM would have to consider. 50 pt, 23 year olds dont grow on trees, and when you can get one for a rental, it's usually a steal.
I think if dougie wants to land a top rental (Stone, Panarin level), labanc would be the centerpiece of the deal. Personally, I think you gotta give to get, so I would be find dangling labanc for the right superstar...

Detroit has zero need for melker.
Gregor has some value, as being top 10 in the WHL in scoring is good, but he is also an overager, which lowers that value. He is not a blue chip prospect in the level of the Chwins, blichfeld, merkley, or even gambrell.
a 2nd is a 2nd. It will likely be the sharks 2nd as the better of the FLA or SJS second goes to Ottawa.
Ryan is respectable, but also not that attractive for a team of detroit's age. Im just not sure that a #8Dman, an overage midlevel prospect, and a 2nd gets nyqist. I would think the price for nyquist is likely a tp flight prospect and a 1st. If the sharks dangled chekhovich, merkley or perhaps blichfeld, along with the second and mayve another later pick (4th or 5th), that might be competitive.
Boyle just went for a second. Is Nyqist only worth Gregor and Ryan more?
I like the nyqist target, but Im not sure such a fleecing is possible. (I'm still holding my breath for Panarin or Stone...)

sharks get the big fish

I think anyone who comes to SJ considers staying. I would put SJ as the front runner for EK65 now. Kane, Jones, Jumbo, Burns all traded into SJ and chose to stay long term. Im not sure there is any other team in the NHL so prolific at trading for talent, and then re-signing that talent long term, especially as a UFA (rather than trading for a 22 yo and then signing them long term). If panarin came, dougie could sell him on staying. Same for stone, or any other rental.
I am not sure dougie would want to keep him depending on pavs, EK 65, Meier, etc. But if he did, and the cap worked, I wouldnt put it past him.
That said, I think dougie migth still take a run at him even with minimal chance to re-sign. Sharks are going for it and a guy like panarin or stone gives them a clear edge. Right now, they have pavs, cooch, kane, hertl, and meier who are on big time pace. Then donkey, sorensen, thornton, and labanc rounding out the top 9. Its solid, but those 4 are all under 50 pt pace, and not exaclty highly fearsome. Turn donkey and labanc into panarin and stone, and god help the rest of the league.

<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>aedoran</b></div><div>Yeah but is SJ ok with Panarin as a rental? Panarin has made it very clear no contract talks till the end of the season. Now I have no idea what or where he wants to sign. Maybe he said that to keep Columbus off his back for the season.</div></div>
I think dougie made it clear that he would be open to a rental as a sepcial thing this year. The sharks are all in on this season. It's pretty clear. Burns, Vlasic, Couture, Pavelski and co arent getting younger. Meier will require a big raise. EK 65 may be gone.
This is the year for the sharks to make their best run yet, and I think dougie would be willing to pony up for the right difference maker even if as a rental.
Obviously, Id be shocked if they landed both stone and panarin, but one or the other is not unreasonable. They have young guys to dangle in Labanc, Ryan, and lots of pretty good prospects including 3 AHL players nearly a point per game all 22 or younger, the leading scorer in all of canadian juniors, the #2 scorer in the entire QMJHL, the #2 scoring Dman in all of the OHL. The #10 leading scorer in the WHL (gregor). They also have the #1 GAA and Save % goalie in the Qmjhl (Emond). That's a fairly nice menu of prospects to dangle in trade.
