All the re-signings can fluctuate a little bit based on the contract year. I agree I could be a little high on Kerfoot, because I doubt he'll maintain last year's pace. I think Varly's will be the most interesting - can he make it through a full season without another major injury? IF he stays healthy and plays well, I doubt he'll go below his current contract value. But he has consistently been getting injured during his current contract, and it makes the $6M hard to swallow.
I would love to see COL go for Draisaitl. Would be an awesome combo with MacK, and he keeps the youth movement going.

I agree with all this. So maybe the best of these worlds would be to
1) Start Kamenev at 4C to see how he does (or 4W, with Compher/Wilson centering)
2) Start Calvert at 2W to give Kamenev time to develop, and maybe help Jost grow?
3) Keep Kerfoot on 3W to give an offensive upgrade over Comeau

The only thing I'd question here is Kamenev. He's a big wild card for me, because we only got to see him for ~2 minutes last season. That's the bigger reason why I had Kerfoot up on the 2nd line. Otherwise, I think this is another likely lineup. I have a feeling the 2-4 lines will get shuffled a lot, besides Nieto-Soderberg staying together.

I think you're overrating Compher, and I hope the Avs didn't just pay Calvert $2.8M/yr to be scratched... Here's what I think it'll look like:
Landeskog-MacK-Rantanen
Andrighetto-Jost-Kerfoot
Calvert-Kamenev-Compher
Nieto-Soderberg-Bourque
Zadorov-Johnson
Cole-Barrie
Girard-Nemeth
Scratches/Fringe Players:
D - Barberio, Meloche, Timmins, Lindholm
F - Wilson, Toninato, O'Connor, Greer
I'm not sure how the D pairings will actually go. I don't like dropping Girard to the 3rd pair, but I don't know if I would pair him with Barrie either.

Close, but you have 4 players on ELCs (Point, Rantanen, Werenski, Dahlin).
I'd also find a way to get Vasilevsky ($3.5M) and Ellis ($2.5M) in there somehow. Can't really compete with those contracts.

I dont think this is a bad move, you have 2 goalies who could lead you to a cup.
It worked for the Caps.
The money works and I actually think Colorado could trade Barrie yo Dallas so they get what they wanted in EK but have to pay a division rival at least a first and probably a prospect.
But Colorados top 4
Girard-Karlsson
Cole-Johnsson
Timins -Someone Else.
That team competes and is better than Winnipeg and probably Nashville.</div></div>
I'm excited to see how the Varly/Grubauer pair works out this year. I agree that Varly could definitely take a salary hit in re-signing, because he's had so many injury issues. I think Bednar/Sakic will really try to limit Varly's consecutive starts here. If Varly doesn't want to stay, then there's some hope Francouz will be able to transition (this year will be first year in North America, in AHL).
I really think you're missing out by leaving Zadorov off this roster. He brings a physical presence that COL doesn't have in their other defensemen, and he's a good skater that can take some offensive opportunities. This year was a good developmental year (after coming in late/out of shape), and it'll be interesting to see how he plays in a contract year.
Just realized the lines are a little off, with some forwards not playing their normal positions. I think it would be more like:
Panarin-MacK-Rantanen
Landeskog-Jost-Kerfoot
Calvert-Kamenev-Kaut
Nieto-Soderberg-Compher
Zadorov-Karlsson
Girard-Johnson
Cole-Timmins
Grubauer

<a href="/users/burla13" target="_blank">@burla13</a> moved Makar + OTT 1st for EK in his previous post. That's why he's able to sign EK for 8 years here.
But if you add EK, Barrie has to be moved. They're too similar of players, and this team would have ~$22M in its RHD alone. You would probably move Timmins or Meloche to that 3rd RHD spot. And this post leaves out Zadorov, which is a big mistake for LHD.
As far as affording everyone, this is plausible. If you move Barrie, you can afford Zadorov and a backup goalie. The biggest question mark to me is whether Grubauer is actually ready to be a full time #1. Sakic may be hesitant to go that route after all the injuries Varlamov took.

31 in 31: Colorado Avalanche
You're right that secondary scoring is an issue for COL, but I don't see Zuccarello being a good fit.
1) He's an upcoming UFA, and this won't be a year for COL to make a deep playoff push. Still rebuilding at this point
2) COL is trying to grow around its young core, and bringing in a 31-yr old (at TDL) doesn't help that. COL has been burned by aging veterans in the past few years
3) Tying into 1&2, giving up a 26-yr old (at TDL) Nieto and a couple prospects doesn't make a lot of sense. Even though you definitely get a talent upgrade from a 3rd/4th liner in Nieto
I would lean more towards players like Burakovsky, Stone, Panarin, Nylander, and JT Miller. I know those guys are very likely unobtainable, but that's more of the fit in age/top-6 quality. I think Sakic will ride out this year without major changes to the team, but we'll see.

In general, I like this a lot - keep the rebuild going without major changes. I do think Barrie will get moved because of our RHD depth, but not sure yet. I also don't see Nemeth getting paid more than Zadorov in 19-20.
Burakovsky contract seems way too high. He would be a nice addition as a young, talented winger, but the contract is off compared to your other ones here.
17-18 stats:
Bura: 25 pts in 56 games (0.45 PPG) -- $5M x 6 yrs
Kerf: 43 pts in 79 games (0.54 PPG) -- $3.15M x 2 yrs
Ghetto: 22 pts in 50 games (0.44 PPG) -- $1.75M x 2 yrs
I would guess you mainly just have Andrighetto undervalued, and all 3 of these guys would be in the $3-4M range. Then again, Tom Wilson just got $5.2M x 6 yrs, so who the hell knows anymore?

I'm not hard set on Barrie for Miller. I do think they move Barrie for a young, promising winger/center though. I just picked Miller because he's a similar cap hit, TBL could use a high-end RHD, and Miller is one of the few desirable forwards on TBL without a NTC.
I would definitely not want COL to move OTT 1st/Timmins/Jost for Stone. That's an overpayment from COL to me in this scenario. The Stone trade happens as it is (or similar prospects) depending on how desperate OTT is to get their 1st back. It may seem better to OTT too if Stone is only taking a 1 year arbitration deal before going UFA. If OTT doesn't want to go for a deal like this, then COL hangs on to the OTT 1st and is happy with a likely top-5 pick.

Zadorov or Zaitsev? And for how much.
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>coga16</b></div><div>You didnt ask me anything so dont lie, I was having a conversation with someone else. Zads isnt untouchable but its a known commodity to the Avs blue line, brings some offense, has a nice base line of what he can do after 200 nhl games, and bring a big time physical edge.
Djoos had a nice rookie season but he got 14 points after some heavy heavy offensive zone starts. Zads plays a different game, used in a defensive role and still out produced Djoos. than him so on a team with already Barrie, Girard and Makar coming up, they dont need more offensive minded dmen. They are happy with the guy they have and arent in the business of selling off assets like this is some sort of game of NHL18 .
Ask yourself what are you offering to the Avs that they need, bc offering them something they already have doesnt temp teams. Christian Djoos is a nice player but he doesnt move the needle of why they would move a guy like Zads who they have spent time and assets to develop</div></div>
This is spot on ^. And I was the one more against Kempny replacing Zadorov in that thread. I'll admit that Kempny is better on paper than I thought he was, but I still would rather have Zadorov because he fits COL's plan better and has a higher ceiling. (And again, I don't see why WSH would trade Kempny after he showed such good chemistry with their franchise defenseman).
My recurring point is that I don't see any way the Avs move Zadorov without knowing they're bringing in another young, defensive LHD. As far as I know, COL doesn't have any high-end LHD prospects (it's all RHD in Makar, Timmins, Meloche), so giving up an improving young LHD goes against COL's stage of the rebuild. <a href="/users/coga16" target="_blank">@coga16</a> can correct me here if I'm wrong.

I doubt OTT will have to trade him as a rental. EK started the season a little slow coming off the leg injury, but he ended with 31 points in 29 games after the all-star break on a horrendous team.
I agree that including Ryan really limits the deal for anyone, unless OTT is retaining a big chunk of salary. And who knows, maybe OTT isn't as desperate to move him now that they're way out of the playoffs. Gotta hit the cap floor somehow...

I really just tossed Soderberg out there to clear room for the young guys. Not sure who he would go to, or if it happens this year or next. The Avs aren't forced to move him right now.
I don't think Barrie to OTT makes sense, unless they're going to flip him immediately. He's in his prime years, and it's a waste to have OTT pay him while they're rebuilding. That's why I had the 3-team trade to try to get OTT an additional solid, young player (22).

Wouldn't the Avs be a lot better off, keeping Barrie at 5.5m, having that lottery pick and have 11.5m spend on other players. than having EK at 11m and Ryan at 6m?</div></div>
Yeah, I'm on the fence with it. I would be fine with the Avs sitting the EK madness out, or adding a prospect/player to avoid taking Ryan's contract. Barrie is a solid player in his own right, but there aren't many chances to add a generational player.

You’re a wizard, Joseph
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>rtapp326</b></div><div>Interesting thought with the 3-team trade. I think Colorado’s plan was to replace Barrie with Makar and get a high-end forward back for Barrie. But if Karlsson is an option, he effectively replaces Johnson, so they can use EJ as that chip for the forward. I think Johnson would be a great fit in Toronto because of his two-way capability and cost-control. Maybe the Avs include another pice for Toronto. Compher?
The thought behind adding Nemeth is his chemistry with Barrie. They basically add a solid D pairing for Karlsson</div></div>
Another reason I was against trading EJ was because I thought he had a full NTC. Looks like it's modified though, so that helps. I don't know the Leafs' D situation too well, so I can't judge whether Barrie or Johnson is a better fit for them.
Couple other reasons to keep EJ:
- Keeping Timmins in AHL this year means we don't have to protect him
- Leadership
I think Compher is expendable, so I could see him getting added in one way or another. I also agree that moving Barrie for a young, skilled winger makes a lot of sense. Makar/Timmins/Meloche coming up makes that look great.
I would hesitate in moving Nemeth too. Not because I think he's phenomenal or anything (he's a 3rd pairing guy to me), but because in these trades you're getting rid of 3 guys that are used to Bednar's system. I don't know how much that's worth, but moving out 3/6 starters at once is risky to me.

EK trade value seems about right. Not sure if you need to include Nemeth, but there would probably be some balancing of picks/prospects. But this trade with COL just boils down to how bad OTT wants their 1st back. Also, if OTT takes Barrie, I think they would quickly flip him while his value is high.
I think you're overvaluing Erik Johnson in the TOR trade.
Honestly, you could use these trades as a framework for a 3-team trade. Have Barrie go to TOR, Nylander/Kamenev/Pick/Others to OTT, EK to COL. Other picks/prospects to balance.

I think Barrie + OTT 1st + Compher would be close. I don't think the Avs would part with Jost, as he's slated to be our 2C (or Kerfoot).
Honestly, a 3-team trade might also be an option (or a quick flip of Barrie). I don't understand OTT keeping Barrie - OTT would be paying for his prime years on a rebuilding team. Flip him to a contender while his value is high.

Overall, I don't think Yakupov is worth it. Definitely not a top line player at this point. If he produces in this situation, it's because Ovi and Kuzy do all the work for him.

I don't think you're too far off on what his value would be if he were in the COL system, and they were looking to just re-sign him. But he's going to come at a premium to pry him away from OTT. At this offer sheet salary, OTT matches it in a heartbeat. I would actually think they would have given a better offer in the first place, with more term and a little more money.
He fits COL well because:
1) Makes OTT worse for next year
2) Young (26), elite winger
3) Right-handed shot
Over the past 4 seasons, Stone has averaged 60 points (0.86 points/game). Converted to a full 82-game season that would be 71 points, but to your point, he has had issues staying healthy.
