Lines I Want To See
I agree with your 1st line, but you go way off the rest of the way.
Danault is not a 2C, and if you feel that he is you're recreating Pleky 2.0
KK is our 2c give him the goal scorers. Danault is holding back tt and Gally
Put Danault with Leky and Hudon and watch that trip shine..... Danault will balance out their lack of full zone play.
Lastly you need a high energy fast and goal capable 4th line in today's NHL. Shaw, Peca, Armia is what I would go with.

My lines
Giving only 4 stars because I believe you should swap Hudon and Shaw.
Also I don't believe Byron is a 1st line RW and that Gallagher needs to be there.
Totally agree that Kotka is our 2nd C and should be pIaced with goal scorers.
Anyone who thinks Danault is a 2C is out of touch .. others are making him look good. Put him on 3C and watch him do the same with capable play makers and goal scorers.
My lines would then be
Drouin Domi Gally
Tartar KK Byron
Leks Danault Hudon
Shaw Peca Armia
D wise I believe we need to have a rotation playing with Weber every game. No one other than petry can play the same amount of time he does....so rotate.
That means the rest of the d for the most part is made up follows the same philosophy with the exception of petry.
Key note though is that no dman should be put on his off side. LD and RD remain

Habs and oilers swap
Both Lucic and alzner don't fit today s nhl. Faster, younger puck movers. If it's a salary dump I'd keep alzner because of the shorter term lower cost. Edm needs to add a 2nd or more to make that trade mAke any sense.
Also I don't see why all the hype with puljaarvi?
Hasn't done much on a team starving for secondary scoring like the oilers

I like the Hanzal idea but there would need to be guaranteed additional picks coming back to the Habs, something I'm not sure Dal is willing to give up.
Also I was reading an article on a Habs website that said Spezza may be willing to go to the Habs with the belief he could go to a contender at the deadline.
The thing with Hanzal is that he's just an older version of Danault and has two years remaining.
He would have to be our 2C bumping Janmark to 1C

Getting Younger to Rebuild
It's comical at best when people here seem to think that Bergevin has the capacity as GM to pull off multiple big name trades...... During his tenure as GM he has managed 1 big name trade and that was during the off season... If you include this seasons galchenyuk/Domi that's two.... He's never been able to put multiple pieces together (nor have many GMs) on multiple trades to better the team...
He's done for now...face it

EDM trade -filling both teams' needs
Here are my adjustments.
Edt trade stays, I think it's completely fair.
You're about 500k and 1 year too much on the Danault resigning. Remember in 3 years, Poehling or Kotkaniemi is in there.
Move Drouin to left again.
Offer a protected 1st, a 2nd, Lekhs or Hudon, and McCarron to Buffalo for O'Reilly and a 2nd.
Forget Neal, too much don't need another LW.
Keep the Pleky signing.

says who??? reports are just that he's talking to 5 teams during the "interview" period.
nobody knows for sure who the five teams are? there are speculations - but nobody knows.
People have the Lightning and Leafs as one of those teams - these two teams can't offer Tavares anything close to what I'm proposing (10MIL maximum - and even that's a stretch).
Interview period doesn't mean that's the only teams the player will receive offers from - in fact, its more for the player to see what's out there (in one week), therefore he can't "interview" with all 32 teams.
This actually gives the NYI a bargaining advantage if they see a team that has courted JT.
If they feel they can't sign him, they can reach out to that team for some draft picks in order to get that extra year.
So, let's face it, you, me and nobody else knows who Tavares is speaking with.
My offer of 14.5MIL/season still stands - its doable for MTL and will keep them competitive for years to come with a solid core locked down. (Price, Weber, JT, Patches, Drouin)
You can then start to pencil in drafted prospects who are cheaper as they come through the ranks. (ie. Poehling, Kotkaniemi, Ylonen, Romanov, Olofsson, Josh Brook, Joni Ikonen, Bitten, Vejdemo, Addison, Jake Evans)
Guys like Gallagher, Byron, Danault, DLR, McCarron, Hudon, Lekhonen, Sherkbak, Lernout, Mete - won't have long term futures with this club - they'll be used and shipped out to make room

Habsolutely! Habs 2018-2019
You're taking a huge risk (whichever GM you are) trading away your 3OA and not getting back another later 1st rounder. You better hope it works....because any player drafted 3rd or later until you make your next pick will always be the player you missed out on.....
That's alot and in this years draft it means 33+ players you will always be under the gun with......
As good as Reinhardt is - is that a risk worth taking?
Also, you will need alot more than 6Mil to get Stastny.
Forget Pleky, put Shaw on LTIR, both Danault and JDLRs contracts need to drop at least 500k each and get rid of Benn and Schlemko.

Different Spin on a Montreal shakeup
A couple of points on Tavares
1 - there are other teams that can afford that cap hit that are closer to playoff-bound or cup contenders than the habs. Plus with the taxes, I think you need to up the ante. You have the cap space (plus projected to raise to 80M), so why not use it and throw Tavares a 15M/year offer?
2 - there's no way JT makes it to free agency. Snow will trade his rights away at the draft (with prior consultation to assure a contract is signed) to a team (like the habs) and he'll demand a kings ransom for that - expect a 1st, 2nd, roster player and prospect (around those lines). There are some here who think that a draft day deal for Tavares' rights will be cheaper - but no team is going to want to give up anything for his rights unless they're able to talk to him first and have a verbal agreement in place - and that's going to cost.
These two points being said - if JT reaches that far - I say the habs throw EVERYTHING they can to get the guy.
Lastly, with that sort of cap space - why not also go after DeHaan and really put the screw to Snow ;)

MTL 18-19
<div class="quote"><div class="quote_t">Quoting: <b>CaptainFlynnt</b></div><div>Danault has put up back to back seasons of 40 pts (on pace for that this season) and he does this while playing excellent defensive hockey and minimal powerplay time. $3.5M would be a good deal. Yeah he is an RFA but another team could just offer sheet him for a 2nd Round pick.
You're obviously gonna be upset when you see what Bergevin extends him for (even though it will be a fair deal no doubt).
Edit: He also isn't coming off his entry level deal, Bergevin already extended him for 2 years.
Also danault is 25. He will be UFA soon so you're going to have to buy some UFA years if you want to sign him with term (which would be ridiculous not to do).</div></div>
So 1 40pt season (he's not gonna get 40 this year) warrants a 4x + salary hike?
Yeah, you can argue if he wasn't injured he would've gotten 40 pts again - but coulda, shoulda , didn't is what it comes down to.
I really believe that Danault over achieved last year by playing with Radulov - had it not been for that - and the need to thrust him into the #1C position, his numbers wouldn't have come close.
He's also not been able to elevate Patches game playing most the year with him when Patches was able to score 30+ goals consistently with the likes of Desharnais and Plekanec.
And just to give you a point of reference, Plekanec (which is who I equate Danualt to, but Danault has less skill) only received a 2.75M 1 year contract after scoring 3 consecutive 20+ goal seasons. After Pleks first FULL year with the Habs, in which he scored 20 goals and 47 pts he only received a 1.6M/year contract (2 years).
Sorry, but I just don't see the reasoning for awarding Danault the kind of money that's being suggested here - and I don't see him sticking long term on this team (maybe as a 3rd, eventually a 4th line center) - if we ask (and pay) Danault for more than that (2C or 1C), then we're just running into the same course we did the last twenty years with Pleks, Desharnais and Koivu - who were all great as #2 and #3 centers, but definitely were not #1C.

WOW - going into a season with Danault as your #1C does't smell like success.
Have we not learned anything in the last two decades with guys like Plekanec, Desharnais, Koivu?
These were/are good centers but they were never true #1C's - the limited success they did have only clouded our perception and because of that we never really made a push for a true #1.
Our last true #1 C was Damphouse that was over 20 years ago.
With 10M in cap space - go out and find a true #1 C to hold the fort until Vilardi is ready .
Lastly, what has Danault done to warrant such a salary? coming off his ELC and a RFA - he should be getting no more than 2.5M/year. If he wants to sign a bridge deal (2-3 years), I'd say lower that number to 2M.

I think you're right in that Tavares would want to pick a team that has a chance to win.
Unfortunately, he doesn't have this luxury of picking where to go.
His modified NTC is that he can submit a list of 8 teams he WONT be traded to. That leaves the door wide open for a lot of other teams.
Also, the reality is that most cup contenders are up against the cap as it is - meaning they wouldn't be able to afford JT - especially if he hears that MTL is willing to put 15M (8 years) on the table.

what's crippling teams like the 'hawks is that they've put majority of their cap space in one position - forward.
What I like about this scenario with the Habs is that they would have 3 key positions locked up - long term. (Weber, Price, Tavares).
You then start to build your roster around these three with younger (cheaper), complimentary players, add in the odd veteran here and there, and you have yourself a cap friendly team with 3 superstars in three key positions.
The beauty of this after is that if these younger (cheaper) complimentary players begin to perform well, you move them out for future picks and other youngsters with potential before their salary demands become too rich.
Its a "revolving door" of complimentary players, while keeping your team competitive and locking down three key positions necessary for any contending team.

As for acquiring his rights, once the Isles give up on signing him, his rights are largely worthless. Their value is that you get to be the first caller and be able to offer an extra year. That's a pick or a prospect, but it's not a huge haul.</div></div>
Agree that with the cap space MTL has now and can potentially have come the summer (cap increase, player moves etc...) offering a 7 year 15M+ deal to Tavares is doable. If we can get his negotiation rights and offer that extra year for a pick and a prospect - I would do it in a heartbeat (but it would have to be a "sure thing".

Why would you sign Stastny if you have Bjustad - who is a very capable 2C.
Also, Tavares (if he makes it to UFA status) would require alot more (ie.15M/year) to sign in MTL.
Save the $$$ on Stastny, offer JT more and resign Pleky at a bargain 1 year deal (1.5 - 2M) and down the middle you look like this.

I've been hearing that they would need to come around 15M/year to sign him.
But I doubt he makes it that far.
If the Isles believe they can't sign him, then they'll move his rights during the draft - which MTL can pick up, but they would be giving up a lot in return (picks, prospect, roster players).

who cares about who he's been playing with recently - the majority of the season, he's been with Patches (including on the power play ) - you can fact check that with the links I supplied you if you don't believe me.
The discussion here was that Danault is nowhere near deserving of 4.5M salary.
I gave my reasons and one of them was that I pointed out that Danault, playing with Patches for most of the season has actually dropped Patches production - this is after Patches was able to have 30+ goal seasons with the likes of Desharnais and Plekanec.
Danault is a very capable 3C - and a good "fill in" 2C when injuries arise.
that doesn't warrant a huge pay rise to the tune of 4.5M.
he should be getting a 3 year 2.5M (max) deal.

HABS 2018
Overall I like the trade ideas and signings and think its a good example of a retool
- I do think we would have to take on Spezza in order to get that deal done.
- Don't think Nichuskin comes back to N.A. and if he were to come back room on RW top 9 would have to be made.
- Don't know about the Carolina deal, think we would have to throw in one of our late 2nd or 3rd round picks to get that deal done.
- For 1 year deal I think Vermette is going to get around 2M (definitely not lower than what he's making now) and for that price and 4C I would much rather bring back Plekanec
- Carr, Rychel, Valiev should be getting a little more (ie. 950K-1M)
- the Schuldt signing means one of Valiev or Reilly has to go (IMO)
Otherwise, my lines would look more like this.
Drouin, Rask, Gallagher
Galchenyuk, Spezza, Scherbac
Lekhonen, Danault, Hudon
Deslaurier, Plekanec, Byron
