Description
Here is a realistic look at what I think the Wild could look like next year. I believe all of these trades are fair. Greenway for Kapanen is something I have seen floating around on this site for awhile. It’s an intriguing idea. Toronto gets a big body whose contract runs for another year and Minnesota gets a right-shot scoring winger. Both are the same age. Carolina gets Zucker for secondary scoring behind Aho and Teravainen and Minnesota gets a solid replacement to Spurgeon.

In regards to the signings, I don’t see Paul Fenton committing to any of these players long-term yet. That’s why Fiala, whom Fenton is most familiar with, signed for the most years at four. I also believe Faulk will re-sign in his hometown after this season. He fits in nicely with Brodin on the second pair.

Let me know your thoughts!

Trades
1.
MIN
  1. Hartman, Ryan [RFA Rights]
  2. 2019 1st round pick (PHI)
Additional Details:
Wild receive a player in Hartman they have had interest in the past. They also get the #11 overall selection in the draft, giving them back to back picks just outside the top 10.
PHI
  1. Spurgeon, Jared
Additional Details:
PHI gets a player that Chuck Fletcher is very familiar with. He can step in right away on the top pairing and be effective. Spurgeon re-signs in Philadelphia long-term.

What if the Flyers threw in Ghost and Wild add Zucker?

I like this, but I have concerns about it keeping Minnesota locked in mediocrity for another year or two.

Assuming Zegras and Newhook are the guys for the Wild at #11 and #12, what would the plan for 2019-20 be? There's at least 5 teams in the central that are consistently better than what this iteration of the Wild would be. Instead of extending Faulk, I'd be looking into flipping him. Is there something to be had with the Lightning and Callahan? At some point the rebuild needs to legitimately start: everyone's wasting their time so long as the Wild try to remain in the mix with the core they have right now. This is probably the year to start weaponizing expiring deals and cap space to begin with real change.

Does Fenton even talk to Waddell any more?

You have good points. Unfortunately, ownership disagrees with the fan base. Ownership wants to be relevant next year while the fan base and ownership would like to tear it down.

I have looked at Tampa Bay but I’m not sure they’d give up anything significant for someone to take Callahan as it’s only one year. One of their prospects I like is Cal Foote but they won’t move him just for someone to take Callahan. Other people want Tyler Johnson but I don’t see him fitting with this team trying to get younger up front.

It’s not Don’s fault Paul called and offered a scoring winger straight up for a guy that was going to be bought out at the end of the year! Paul needs to think about what he’s doing before making a move!
