Description
Oilers have a serviceable 1st pairing with Nurse-Barrie that gets RESULTS, not just based off of cute advanced stats. Barrie QB's the PP until Bouchard can take over in year 3 of his deal.

Oilers also get back their old 1st pair in Klefbom & Larsson. Both play a sound two-way game, covering for each other's weaknesses.

Russell can be the steady hand for Bouchard. Both can rotate in with Lagesson depending on the opponent.

All this before Broberg & Holloway arrive! 32M in cap space available in the offseason.

  3. 2021 6th round pick (PIT)
Additional Details:
You cannot trade for a top 6 winger, without giving up a top 4 d-man. I like Bear, good guy and he's going to be a legit middle pairing guy.

The reason I'd deal him here and now is that re-signing Barrie (when he's at his prime) keeps us competitive now and until Bouchard gets to HIS peak as well.

Bear is a swiss army knife kinda guy. Wide skillset. He's not specialized in anything or horrible at anything. He's decent across the board. That is a strength and a weakness when comparing him to Barrie (ELITE offensive guy, ELITE PP QB, but lacking defensively) and Larsson (physical, hard to play against, shutdown type, but lacking offensively).

Bear is valuable. Valuable enough to land a legit top 6 guy in DeBrusk who I would really like to have come home.

CBJ
  1. Jones, Caleb
  2. Koskinen, Mikko ($1,700,000 retained)
  3. Skinner, Stuart [RFA Rights]
Additional Details:
If CBJ goes with Korpisalo as their starter, Mikko at that pricepoint makes sense for a backup.

Meanwhile Oilers work on an extension with Elvis.

If Bear could play LD, maybe, but I can't see Boston going after another RD

not bad but 4 mill left in cap space? bump kassian down and sign yourself a third line RW that can help score

Barrie is a defensive black hole. Tippett benched him in the final minutes and let Nurse-Larsson, Russell-Bear close out the game against WPG. When you really think about a 3 year Barrie contract it makes even less sense than it does on the surface

Next year with these lines we'd get by OK but it makes no sense having 2 offensive RD

2022-23, Broberg will be replacing Russell in this plan. Broberg and Bouchard will need sheltered minutes, and won't PK. They can't be relied on to shut down 1 goal games. Barrie can't defend, so lump him into that group too. That means half your defenseman can't PK or be relied on for steady defense

Keep Bear because he's much, much better defensively, PK's well and can be relied on in close games, not benched like "top 2 defenseman" tyson barrie. I like what Barrie has done this season, but you can't have more than 1 or 2 sheltered defenders

Dont trade Bear for DeBrusk. Sign Iaffalo or Hall, and let Barrie walk
