Buffalo doesn't have an issue when if comes to putting the puck in the net. if you look at the make up of their D core 4/6 of their current core are what would be considered Offensive Defenseman, while I haven't watched any of their games this year due to regional viewing restrictions what i have seen from highlights it their d like to pinch in an lot and the forwards dont always cover the blue line that forces the goalie to play 2v1 alot. also Schmidt is a Two Defenseman who in my opinion is more of a defensive player. While he may not have a great career high for points the key would be that you get a guy who can play solidly in his own end and still on occasion produce points here and their.

what this does also is takes away the pressure and stress on the forwards on the ice allow them to play their man and not have to leave someone open. think of it as a way to help out the goalie as well, as Schmidt is a very vocal guy who can push the play in his own end.
