Both teams have to agree to a trade. I doubt Winnipeg takes this just because Zaitsev has one year less than Nate Schmidt. Difference in talent is too great imo.

Schmidt's deal is so much worse than Zaitsev's for Ottawa. More term and way more money. That contract absolutely screws them next offseason. Schmidt's better than Zaitsev, but not if he's gonna make signing Pinto or Zub impossible.

Pretty significant when neither player is living up to that kind of contract.

Even if sens can't get a big fish deal like Chychurn, and they aren't able to move Zaitsev this season, it's WAY smarter to circle back next summer. They'll be under the gun, but a 1× 4.5mil deal, potentially with Just 2.5mil actually left on the deal is not gonna be very difficult to move.
