"If the Leafs decide to keep Matthews and Marner?" No it's the players who will decide where they want to play. I can't see UFA Engvall taking a reduction in pay, or Samsonov signing for so little.
Plus when Matthews and Nylander contract are up...Sandin and Liljegren will deserve big raise.

It's doable but will make for a very tough season I think, but the year after JT will be coming in at much less which will make it more manageable as the cap goes up. So long as we don't add any bad long term contracts, which Dubas doesn't really do, we'll be fine.

Or they just keep nylander and don't sign an old heavily declining 34 year old kane

The Jackets are not trading Laine for 1 year of Nylander and wouldn't retain either. You can trade Nylander to some other team or keep him as your own rental since you would probably not be able to afford his next contract. Also, Marchenko would cost at least a 1st plus by himself and is not a throw in for a ridiculous trade proposal.
