Description
It seems to me that the perfect fit for William Nylander is Nashville. The Predators need a top-line RW and have the assets to pay for him, plus, they have the cap space right now to absorb his entire cap hit. This acquisition should certainly push Nashville across the finish line into the playoffs. Toronto gets two excellent prospects, a first and a second, which is a very heavy package even for an All-Star. (The assumption here is that Nashville is permitted to negotiate an extension of Nylander's contract and the parties reach an agreement acceptable to both. Of course, whether Toronto would permit such negotiations OR whether they would be successful is highly speculative. But what should be absolutely clear is that no team can afford to pay the cost of obtaining Nylander if all that they are assured of getting is one season of him.)

Maple Leafs fans should like this futures-only trade because it solves Toronto's cap problems, both short term and long term. Moreover, with Treliving going out of his way to sign big-ticket free agents Todd Bertuzzi and Max Domi and John Klingberg (plus adding David Kampf and Ryan Reaves at generous prices), it seems to me that something very much like this might well have been his long-range plan from the start.

With Tyson Barrie and Kevin Lankinen coming off the books next summer plus an anticipated multi-million-dollar cap rise, Nylander's new contract shouldn't be difficult to absorb and there should still be plenty of space to sign (or re-sign) players to fill out the roster. Plus, the loss of two prime prospects is easier to swallow with other youngsters like Egor Afanasyev, Fedor Svechkov and Joakim Kemell in the pipeline and Matthew Wood on the horizon.

Note: I'm completely clueless about what Nashville's defense pairings might be.

A year of Nylander isn't worth the equivalent to three 1sts and a 2nd, and an extension up to $10M doesn't really add value. Just because a team has the cap space to overpay a player, doesn't mean they should.

Sorry bud, I don't see the fit at all. As a Leaf fan, I kinda like the trade as the Leafs get future assets and immediate cap help. I can't think of one contending team who would let a star player negotiate with anyone team, with one full year year left on their contract. What happens if there is no new contract, now you have a M NTC Nylander back on the team....and all his teammates now think the Leafs are in sell mode.
I wonder what Nylander's true cap is. IMO he's about the 10th best RWer in the league, that's about 9m tops on any contract. I wonder how successful Nylander would be with ROR would be as his centre compared to Tavares and Matthews. I don't see the upside for Nashville that much.

IMO the Leafs did a great job in free agency, where they got three good players on 1 year deals, Bertuzzi, Domi and Klingberg....for a total 12.6m. This is the best chance for the Leafs to advance further in the playoffs, and it's done best with Nylander.
Next summer....even if the Leafs don't sign any of their top UFAs.....so what. That's lots of cap to sign other players (hopefully wisely)

When did the Leafs get Todd Bertuzzi? Not sure he would have good chemistry with Tyler lol

If Nashville is going to give him 10 million, they will be able to next FA. They aren’t going to compete this year, they realized that with the trades for guys and buyouts..
